With the casual vibe of a seaside town, friendly people, exquisitely delicious food and fabulous local wine, it's impossible not to love Sorrento! My eight days there, whether exploring Sorrento itself or the surrounding areas, were glorious and already I want to return! The sherbert colored buildings, centuries old wooden and iron doors and detailed architecture line the streets and are a feast for your eyes. Make sure to walk along Via Correale with the upscale hotels and the best views of the pools and hotels built into the cliffs going down to the beach. To access the beach you need to take a lift from a hotel or on the west end of town, a public lift for $1 euro each way. It's totally worth it! There is also a path of switchbacks that takes you down. The beach is rocky and there are floating docks with recliners and stairs to the deep aqua blue waters. Lots of cafes down at water level, too. Views from the top are like a postcard or in todays terms, Instagram worthy. Treat yourself to lunch or dinner at one of the hotel restaurants. The food is fabulous and the atmosphere transports you. I recommend the Lorelei and it's outdoor patio with tables under white umbrellas and unparalleled views of Mt. Vesuvius. Or at the opposite end, sit under the lemon tree covered pergola at a table overlooking the cliffs and bathing docks below, the blue sky and the blue water of The Bay of Naples merging into one. Both meals were memorable and I will definitely be going back to both! In the heart of the city is I Giardini de Cataldo, a lemon grove with an entrance on the sidewalk of Via Corso Italia. You can wander and explore for free and try their limoncello and gelato, both available for purchase. Past the Piazza Tasso, the central square, there are narrow streets filled with shops, cafes, churches, museums, restaurants, and bars. The gorgeous centuries old doorways framed by hanging plants, bougainvillea, iron window boxes spilling over with geraniums, with and flag pendants and laundry hanging above. It is as charming as you have imagined, even better! Go down to the port and catch a ferry to the island of Capri where the boats in the harbor and pastel buildings great you. Many high end shops, restaurants and a boat ride to the blue grotto will be a full day. Hire a tour guide to drive you down the Amalfi Coast with stops in Positano, Rovello and Amalfi Town, each with their own beauty and charm. And lots and lots of steps and steep roads! The drive is incredibly beautiful but do leave the driving up to the skilled and experienced drivers. We also did a day trip to Salerno to visit a buffallo Mozzerella farm and have a farm fresh lunch; to Mt. Vesuvius to hike up to the crater; an afternoon taking in the wonders of Pompeii and this preserved ancient city; and a day in Naples where they truly have the worlds best pizza. Really! Even with all that, I had four full days in Sorrento and never ran out of things to do. There are cooking classes, which I highly recommend. Various tours. Lots of shopping. And too many restaurants to name! The food is some of the best in the world and it was surprisingly affordable especially the wine. Delicious pasta dishes for $10 and a bottle of wine for $8. I could live here! If Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are not in your bucket list, they should be! Best time to go is early April or October as the summer months are super hot and the streets overflowing with tourists. We were there the last two weeks of October and it was sunny, 75-80 degrees, and blue skies every day. Plenty of people so you didn't feel like the town was isolated but never too crowded. Sorrento is a beautiful place in every way. Can not wait to return!

From there we got back on the bus and went down to Capri where we were taken on lemoncello tasting, chocolate tasting and some other goodies. From there we went to the Augustus Gardens which were absolutely beautiful. A little more shopping, back on the bus to the ferry and back to mainland with wonderful memories. We took the "fast" ferry to the island with a travel time of about 45 minutes. The crew was very friendly and accommodating as we got on and off the boat. The travel was incredibly smooth, but we did have very calm weather. The ticketing can be a little confusing, when purchasing at the counter at the port of Naples. If at all possible, I suggest you book online and save yourself the hassle.

We did…read morethe day trip to Capri - it was €65 per person for the full day and included a shuttle service that picked us up from our Airbnb and brought us home at night! We got on the boat at the port in Praiano, and made a quick stop in Positano to pick up some more passengers. Our tour guide, Valentina, was amazing and spoke English, Italian and Spanish, making everyone on board very comfortable. Antonio, the captain was great and made a point to spin the boat around at each stop so folks on all sides of the boat could get a prime view. Valentina pointed out sights on the peninsula along the way and we did a full circumference of Capri before the day was over. Unlimited beers, sodas and water is included and they even brought us some snacks along the way. We stopped at all grottos (incl the famous blue grotto) plus a swimming spot, and then got a 4-hour window of free time on Capri to explore. The ride back to Praiano included some Prosecco and pastries to finish the day. They dropped us off at the Marina Grande in Capri and you are free to explore the island for 4 hours. They suggested buying a picnic lunch by the dock (cured meats, cheese, bread, etc), grab a convertible cab ride to the gandola, ride the gandola to the top of Ana Capri, take in the view of the Faraglioni (eat lunch), and then do some shopping in Capri. When we got back to the boat, they gave us a 360 tour of Capri by stopping at every grotto (Blue, Green, and White) and passing under the Faraglioni. They also gave us prosecco and traditional Italian cake. There were also a few swimming breaks when we got to swim in a few bays / hidden caves. The tour of the Blue Grotto is not included in the cost of the tour, but we jumped in a row boat for €25 for a quick stop inside the grotto (it's an obligatory tourist stop, but way overrated). Overall, it was a memorable and highly recommended tour.

I spoke to Shana and she was straightforward, helpful, and priced fairly. She arranged for a boat to pick us up from lunch/beach at Griglio di Tiberio and take us to the grottos. I wish I had done this INSTEAD of taking a tour on one of the boats with other people. Since we had 8 in our party, it made much more sense to have a private captain (Capitan Enzo was friendly and relaxed - a good driver on a fast boat) who took us to all the grottos (Blue Grotto was closed that day). Our driver, Alessandro, was professional, courteous and simply fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about the area and was a wonderful driver. His English was perfect and you could tell he really loved his country and took pride in his job. We had a private tour guide, Pina, at Pompeii. She was phenomenal and really made the ruins "come to life" before our eyes. We got to see many of the highlights without having to be herded with a huge tour group. The drive along the coast was spectacular and Alessandro stopped frequently for photos. We also had about an hour to walk around in Positano (more time than needed as it's just mostly a touristy town with junky shops) and about 1.5 hours in Sorrento (I needed much, much more time there; it is a lovely town). After Sorrento, Alessandro personally walked us to the ferry and purchased our tickets for the return trip to Naples. The folks on our shared tour didn't want to have lunch so unfortunately we missed out on that aspect of the tour. Looking back, I think this tour promises a bit more than it can deliver given the time restraints. I simply don't see how there would be time for a proper lunch on a short day tour. I know it is hard to please everyone on a shared tour, but it is also disappointing to not get to see everything that was promised. We barely had time to visit Pompeii, Sorrento and Positano in the time allotted even without stopping for lunch. That's the only reason I'm ranking this a 4 our of 5 stars; better time management would have allowed us to see a lot more with a short amount of time. It was also a bit of a bummer not to get to see the "real" Napoli as we stuck to boring highways instead of charming side streets. Overall it was a great trip. I really liked having a private driver and air conditioned van (in immaculate condition) waiting for me at each stop. It was fun to feel like a true V.I.P. for the day. I would not hesitate to recommend APTours and I would definitely book them again in the future.

When I say Salerno station was a blur, it was because I ran thru it at top speed. ^_^…read more My train from Naples left 45 minutes late, and my originally ample one hour window to walk leisurely around the city and port district, potentially grabbing something to eat for lunch turned into a mad dash to make sure I caught my connecting ferry to Amalfi. That being said, from my peripheral vision the station looked in decent shape, nothing standout, though fairly clean and functional. There are several train platforms from which you alight from an arriving train, then take stairs or elevator to descend under to a connecting tunnel, from where you follow signs to the exit. If I recall correctly you don't need to scan a ticket to exit. Just have to look for the exit turnstiles (the same as the entry turnstiles though follow the signs that show which ones to use for in versus out). The main exit is at the south face of the station, I paused briefly here to check that I was headed in the correct direction and snapped a couple pics of the front, a stately white-washed building, the nicest train station facade in the city. A taxi stand is right outside of the entrance, parking is available around the traffic circle and in a lot directly in front. Seemed pretty full for a Tuesday afternoon. A war monument stands in the center of the plaza. The walk from the station to the marina where Travel Mar ferry departs--to the towns along the Amalfi Coast--is about 7-8 minutes, then a few more minutes to the end of the pier where you embark. Thankfully I made it with 5 minutes to spare before they started boarding! Around the station are blocks of residential, retail and restaurants, many options if you're looking for a bite to eat.

Over centuries as their power waned, the sites became fishing hamlets and subsequently now tourism destinations due to the scenic beauty of their natural landscapes. These mostly quaint municipalities are: Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca de' Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti, and Vietri sul Mare. Many are located along the water, others like Ravello, Tramonti, and Furore, are perched on the slopes of the Lattari Mountains, and to reach them you need to take public or private transport up the winding and narrow cliffside roads. Personally, my recommendation is to pass on driving yourself, unless you like tackling these types of harrowing driving terrains. Parking is not easy to find and many town centers are pedestrian only so you have to get out and walk anyways. For the coastside towns, travel by ferry is a more convenient and lovely way to see the waterfronts and mountains. The unique topography of the cliffside towns led to cultivation of lemons, citrus and vineyards, which have become synonymous with the region, and during the warmer months you will see citrus and especially lemons everywhere! EVERYWHERE. Walking down the street in Sorrento, after a whiff of motorcycle engine exhaust, the breeze carries a lemon scent when you walk close to one of what feels like hundreds of lemon orchards - in public parks, private gardens and sometimes just randomly along the street. Shops carry fresh lemons the size of grapefruits and I even saw one the size of my head (no exaggeration, see pic!) and every type of lemon souvenir you could imagine under the sun, edible and non-edible. Of course local cuisine incorporates lemons into their dishes too! Amazing food can be enjoyed at many restaurants here, though I've mentioned in separate reviews, these will be pricier than your average Italian city/town. You certainly pay for the views and there's a never-ending slew of spots to catch a breathtaking panorama. And speaking of a panoramic views, if you're into hiking, Il Sentiero degli Dei (the Path of the Gods) is a moderate trail that winds around the higher vantage points connecting Agerola to Positano, with...you guessed it...stellar viewpoints along the way.
