Truly, my first visit was great. It's deceptively large, and I knew I'd need to go back a second day to see the rest. It was really cool to learn the history of the industry and how it led to the cultural and creative makeup of the city of New Bedford today. I even started talking to some of my friends about it, and they started calling me the "whaling girl" . It gave whimsy. It was cute. Cute at first. Then I couldn't stop thinking about it, even when I tried, even when I wanted to. Something about the ways the museum weaved culture and time with history and science... it kept me up at night thinking. What can be measured that is unseen? What has value and who gets to decide that? The more I thought, the more I started seeing our world in an entirely new way. It was a revelation. My friends and family grew worried, as it became all that I could talk about. Over family holiday dinners. At kid's birthday parties. Even my most recent performance review, I brought it up. As you might've guessed, the review didn't go so well. I went on a journey to make sense of what was happening to me. I landed at the Seaport Museum in Mystic, CT. There, I met fellow whaling enthusiasts and a member of the prestigious Melville Society. I was relieved to see other people equally obsessed with whaling. They assured me that my feelings were normal, and encouraged me to volunteer there, as an outlet. I returned to New Bedford and did just that, and it is where I remain today! So if you go to visit, is there the risk of developing an addiction? Undoubtedly. But I think it is nevertheless worth it. Just be sure you go at your own pace and volunteer if you find yourself loosing interest in other hobbies that used to interest you. Trust, you'll have a whale of a time. Also, gift store is dope. There's so many hidden things here and there that are in plain sight but you can't tell because there's trees and other beautiful things surrounding it. Came here with my husband for a tea event, and the grounds alone were breathtaking and relaxing. There is a trail that you can walk. There's also a gift shop and a pond and it's just also peaceful. Very serene view of mother nature I can see anybody being able to paint at this gorgeous peaceful area. You should definitely go online and see upcoming events. They have whiskey tasting gin tasting tea events if you like tea like I do, and even though I am more of a tequila person, I would definitely come for a whiskey tasting event. The pictures I took do not do it any justice as far as how beautiful the scenery is. When you get a chance, you should definitely come down here and might as well buy a family membership if you have a family so that you can come back more than once.

The house is an immaculate Victorian piece with over 25 rooms and about 3 stories. Wayne, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and he said that many times, people with specific interests come to the museum to learn more about certain pieces (people come to learn about clocks, rugs, paintings, wood furniture, Asian pieces, bathrooms, etc). The museum has been used in several TV shows like The Gilded Age and Treasures Inside The Museum. General entrance is $12 per adult and the best thing is to call them to schedule a tour. I found the house warm, almost cozy with the velvet and dark colors. The house is in very good shape and it is clean. You get to see all the different rooms, living room, bed room, dining room etc. There is back staircase that the servants used. The other treasure about this museum is the gift shop. I found the gifts unique. Lot of special Christmas ornaments, but other gifts also. Outside the house the grounds are well kept and well designed. There is a fountain and the garden has a circular design to it. It is not substantial enough to travel from afar to visit, but if you are in Fall River, or near, definitely take the tour.

The house itself is gorgeous! I had no idea that there were so many artifacts from the Lizzie Borden trial housed here. We visited the Borden House later that day and as far as actual artifacts, this museum has them all, not the Borden House. If you are interested in the Lizzie Borden trial at all, come here! I also enjoyed the circular dining room and the clothing exhibit upstairs. I highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting the area. It is a treasure trove of information! Also worth noting is the museum gift shop. Fantastic selection of merch. Literally something for everyone. I loved how the gift shop extended upstairs and included items for the bath. My favorite find was the Lizzie Borden paperdolls, complete with the outfits worn at the trial! Solid 5 stars.

One of their larger sections, but surprising to us were the Iron Stoves which were made out of the local Iron. Their iron industry was later taken over by the iron smelters in the Midwest. They have an extensive genealogical book collection and I located some of the ancestor information I was searching for. I highly recommend stopping here if you are passing through and definitely visit if you live near it.

Lots of people nerding out about stuff they're obviously excited to tell people about. The machines were both massive and tiny - something for everyone to appreciate! I was especially excited to see the motorbikes and some of the old radio equipment. And it was the first time I saw machines people use for Morris code! I'm going with three stars though because the place is a bit overwhelming and could use some help in the labeling/organizing department. The event price was $15, $7 for students, not sure what regular admission is on days without an event.

Tours end in October, which was nice as had the place to myself and could freely roam about. It's a nice place. Couple walking trails, nice waterfront view, and obviously the historical grounds. Would probably be nicer to visit in the summer, but then you have to deal with the crowds. Well worth a trip if for nothing else than the walking trails and the historical aspects.
