During colonial times from the early 16th century through the mid-19th century, the music of Mexico's indigenous nations were influenced by the musical styles of Spanish colonists and the African slave population to form the music now called Mariachi. After the end of the Mexican revolution in the 1920's, the government began promoting Mexican folk music as a source of national pride. It is around this time that the Mariachi costumes became elaborate taking inspiration from Jalisco charros, Mexican ranchers and cowboys. By the middle of the 20th century, mariachi music had made its way into US culture, first in California, then throughout the southwest, and eventually throughout the nation. Mariachi has now become one of the most recognizable Latin music types. Carrying the Mariachi torch in South Florida is the Mariachi Show Mexicanisimo. This musical group can be hired to perform at your private events including birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations. I was able to watch them perform at a friends milestone birthday celebration. The singers had great harmony and they can sing in both Spanish and English. They offer 30 and 50 minute performances. Bailey Hall hosts many arts and cultural events, many which are free throughout the year. The facility is very clean and well maintained. The seats in the theater are very comfortable. The lighting and acoustics are exceptional. All seats have good visibility to the stage. Food and drinks are not allowed in the theater, only bottled water.

We have attended Bailey Hall every year for my niece's Academy of Arts dance recital, except one…read moreyear that they were remodeling. The recital was held at another hall that doesn't hold a candle to Bailey! Broward College in Davie does a phenomenal job keeping everything pristine, and the customer relations are professional and tolerant. Bailey Hall's carpeting, floors and seating for over a thousand, were remodeled about four years ago to the tune of $5MM. They also made upgrades to the stage, doors, concession area, as well as the outside. Since then, many more arts and cultural events have been hosted here and many more would too, had they put a little more money toward repaving the parking lot with better drainage during heavy rain. The engineers and planners must not have realized how cumbersome it is to have to walk the length of an entire football field after finding parking on the side of another BC building because of flooding; especially when it's pouring and there is an insufficient amount of Disabled parking spaces. For this reason, I give them 3.5 stars. Parking IS a big deal!

The teachers cover music theory and how to properly read music in order to play. The school also is one of the only ones to offer a band component as part of the music education. Band enables them to see and hear how many musicians can come together, work as a team and make a simple melody sound like an entire orchestra. The teachers really care about each student and personalize the lessons to fit their interests and abilities. There is a sales pitch when you sign up but keep in mind, this is a business. That said, in the nearly five years my children have been taking lessons here, I have never felt that anyone associated with the school wanted anything other than the best for them and they are truly committed to helping my children be successful. There are opportunities to perform during various concerts, shows and recitals as well as the personalized attention from weekly private lessons as well as the group instruction in band.

To me, this school is my scape, my breath of fresh air, and actually the space for myself, where I can actually turn back in time and be young again (yup! Pretty much like teleporting!). I've taken vocal lessons, drum lessons and belonged to adult band for about 4 years now, and everything has been just beautiful and so fulfilling. They are my family. They actually move me away from my personal reality and get me into a space for freedom, my freedom. And that is priceless. In regards to the staff, Heather, she is one of the most lovable persons I've ever met. Always there to help, with her amazing personality and smile; and Chris, the school director, wow, he is the dream-maker, so caring and so engaged to the students, always understanding and really a genius on its own. All the teachers I've met are highly skilled in their instruments and are incredible human beings. From what I see, little kids and young kids are always in heaven, grasping all these rocking opportunities, understanding what amazing music is, and the level of learning and music education is just amazing. By the end of the night, he had the entire party singing "Piano Man" and it was awesome. He was very personable and professional, and felt like a guest at the party, not just a performer.
