Mario's is an upscale clothing store that while it seemingly is set up for a guy's shopping experience, they absolutely carry women's clothes as well. The doors are locked, and you must ring the bell to be let into the store. This is a sad testament to what's going on in the world. There are definitely plenty of amazing items to select from, and you want to be certain to bring your plastic with you. What an incredible experience! I was first skeptical about buying a Canali so cheap questioning the authenticity of the suit. Took a leap of faith and wow! What a beautiful fabric! I've been looking to add a simply classy black Canali to my wardrobe and had been to most department stores that carry them. I had my eyes set on a particular model. The designers at Mario's personally assisted me and walked me through the model number ensuring I was buying the right one. When I received it, I was shocked to discover the fabric was actually softer and richer than then the Calani at Bloomingdale's! My wife who's into fashion could tell the richness of this particular Canali and couldn't believe what I paid for it! Overall, the best online experience I've ever had and Michael (designer) even sent me a personal follow up text confirming I was 100% pleased with the purchase. We purchased my husband's wedding suit at Mario's and it was one of the best choices we could have made! We worked with Donne, but everyone was so supportive whenever we came in. Donne gave us the confidence to go with a fabric that we liked, but weren't sure about after only seeing a small swatch. Everyone loved it, including us! The tailoring was impeccable; the dinner jacket and pants fit like a glove. Afterwards, my uncle went out and bought a jacket in a similar color because he liked the look so much. Ok experience, but have had better shopping experiences elsewhere. They carry high end menswear and I bought my first Canali suit and Eton shirt here. The outfit they put together was very nice but that is where the good ends. They charged full retail and their tailor, who did a half ass job and for which I was charged, took 3.5 weeks to make basic alterations. Contrast that with my second Canali suit and Eton shirt I bought at Gary's in Del Mar, CA--they offered a 20% discount upfront without my asking, performed alterations at no charge, and my suit was ready within a week. I have bought many items at Canali boutiques; whenever I have needed alterations they were performed at no additional charge. Based on the vastly superior experiences elsewhere, it would be very difficult for me to recommend Mario's. I also got a sniff of attitude as though they were doing me a favor selling me their clothes and it was beneath them to offer any discount to first time customers ( "the reason we have remained in business as long as we have is because we do not give product away"--who the fuck was asking for a handout??). read more

Big fat ass security guard at the front is a buster. The place has nice clothing which I'm accustomed to, went in to try on some Margiela's which they had shipped in and texted me to come try out. Before I had got into the building I stopped by a neighboring store called Bait to get a Bape hoodie and some shoes for the weekend. The workers at bait let me know it'd be about 10-15 minutes before they opened. I got on my phone and seen that Thomas from Mario's (very nice guy ) had texted me letting know the shoes (margiela's) had arrived and I should come by and check them out, which I did. As I approached the door the big fat ugly ass security guard opened the door and said to me "You must be bored" I replied "what?" As I was confused on why he'd think I was bored he replied back "Bait was closed so now you come over here don't let your boredom get the best of you" at this time I realized he was insinuating that I was there to steal I then replied "open the door and watch out" I had to calm myself because this is a man working for $12-15 an hour speaking very outlandish to me and I shouldn't get worked up by someone of this guys caliber. I work extremely hard for everything I have and I don't look the least bit like someone who steals so to be treated this way left a bad taste in my mouth and I will not be coming back again. Sad that a black man would speak to another black man that way he must have been taught this by his counterparts or boss. read more

My friends shop at Marios. When I attempted to shop their security guard at the front door wouldn't let me in the door. I'm dressed nicely in designer cloths, expensive eye glasses, expensive watch, and a diamond ring. The only problem was I am in a wheelchair. What is funny is that my closet is filled with designer clothes, my chair stands and cost 80K, and I'm Caucasian to boot. This is the only store in my life that has denied me entry. Their loss. The staff in the women's department will make you feel like a very dirty immigrant. They will only cater to the 50+ year old stylish blonde women who may have only ever lived in Oregon and completely ignore you while you are in the dressing room hoping for another size. 2. Are you accustomed to shopping at Barneys, Bloomies, Neiman Marcus, or Saks? Well, continue shopping there. Those department stores carry all the same merchandise as Marios, more styles, and have great sales on occasion. Also, free return shipping. This is obviously the most high end retailer in Portland, other than Nordstrom's. They have a number of designers you will not likely find elsewhere. Men's is downstairs, women's is upstairs. For men they had a number of Italian designers and other European designers. For women, the clothing looked like it was curated mostly for tall, tiny models. Staff was very helpful and friendly. In a city with as few fashion options as Portland has, Marios is and has for a very long time been one of the best options for higher price point shopping. Their menswear selection is excellent, I can always find great gifts and special pieces here. Don is one of the most amazing sales associates I've ever worked with, and has been with the store for over 20 years and really knows his stuff. He always makes great suggestions and builds lasting relationships with his customers over years of service. The women's selection is unfortunately quite bland and bizarrely curated most of the time, skewing towards the more practical investment shopper. It is not a place I would go to find exciting or fashion forward womenswear, and I rarely look twice at the shoe selection as it is mostly Louboutin and not much else. They have an amazing Common Projects selection on the mens floor, but not a single option for women. They have recently expanded their fine jewelry department on the first floor, and their sales associates there are extremely helpful. I worked with Andrea to purchase a gift for my mother, and she had great recommendations and was personally knowledgeable about many of the designers they carry in store. Overall, worth a stop in, especially if you're in the market for high end menswear. If you're shopping for womenswear, all I can say is best of luck and hopefully you find a gem! read more

My husband and I made a trip into Mario's to get outfitted for our friend's wedding. The good: my husband had fantastic service and attention with his sales person, Ray Frazier. He put together a gorgeous ensemble for my husband.....pants, sports coat, shoes, pocket square, shirt & belt. The bad: I made my way upstairs to get get help with my outfit. I walked around for 10 minutes, without a single person acknowledging me. I was completely ignored. When I finally found a few dresses to try on, I couldn't find anyone to let me into a fitting room. After approaching a sales girl (who was on her phone), I was let into a fitting room and ignored again. No one came back to assist me, ask how I was doing or to provide me with appropriate shoes to try on with the dresses. I finally just walked out:/ It is a shame. We had been looking forward to this shopping trip for awhile. My husband will be back, but I'll never set foot in there again! read more

My first time visiting Mario's as I heard they carry Etro, and I was looking for a specific blazer I'd seen on the East Coast earlier in the week. Wow .. talk about a bad first impression. I walked in when they were having some celebration with most folks walking around sipping wine. It seems the staff was more focused on their own personal enjoyment than providing service. I milled around for a while looking through the racks, and turned to capture a salesperson's attention on 2 occasions, but they were too focused on themselves to care. In fact, they seemed to prefer talking among themselves to supporting customers they didn't already know. Definitely an odd culture that's developed in this shop. Seems like a good selection of some brands I like, but I'm aghast at the dismal customer service, especially when one would be there with the intent of spending significant dollars. Pro: The building is beautiful, and Mario's seems to have a good reputation in Portland, OR. Customer service upstairs was pretty good. Harmony from Mario's was accommodating and professional. Con: I was very disappointed that the buying is for a very specific demographic; wealthy, and likely the 45 and up that never leave Portland (Or if they do, they stay in their hotel). A shame for us that live in the 25-35 age range that seek high quality clothing, and more curation than just your safe Vince-type brands. I was also disappointed to see 7 of All Mankind, kind of cheesy, no? The only coat offerings were wide puffer coats; hardly flattering for someone that appreciates style. Sales staff are knowledgeable, not pushy. We had Scott for our sales person and he was a class act. Good collection of high end items. Armani, Zegna, Hugo Boss, Prada. Mr. Kitty tried on a few pairs of $250 pants for a job interview. He's been wearing his dad's old suit just fine till now but it's time for some big boy pants! They offered me wine, but I saw the finale of The Celebrity Apprentice so I KNOW that getting people boozed up is a the surefire recipe to get them to buy expensive things they don't need. We went up the street to Banana Republic and got pants we liked better for $70. The quality won't be quite as good, but do you really need pants that last 20 years instead of 10 years? Really? Anyway, I learned new words like "rise" and how to mark a hem, where they get taken in when you lose weight and that nearly everybody has one leg longer than the other, but NOT MR. KITTY. It was fun to watch the humiliation he was put through to have the salesman and I patting at him here and there. read more

I loved the service and the selection at this place. I live in SF, land of Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, and I know my way around both of those stores. Living in SF, salespeople are more tolerant of shoppers with green spiked hair or cheek piercings. I can walk around a Bloomingdales, in a cute outfit, my pink hair and tattoos showing, and get excellent customer service...in Porland? HA! Not so much... Except at Marios. Those women know thier shit. They knew that the $775 bag I was carrying was hot, and it didnt matter that I have pink hair or leg tattoos. They are used to shoppers who have actual style, not some wannabe suburbanite who only buys logo bags or designer jeans with rhinestones on the butt. The staff at Mario's treated me warmly and even went in the backroom to find me a pair of the perfect Splendid leggings, and even brought out different styles! The friendliest shoe salesman ever who calls me about presale and will email me pictures of the shoes (since I'm not usually in the Portland area to come in and take a looksie)? Amazing service. I knew this place was special because it's based on relationships that the sales associates develop with their clientele. It's like how Saks service used to be back in the day before it went so corporate. I love this shop and my long-distance relationship with the salespeople there. As far as I know, I'd say that Mario's is the only seriously impressive menswear store in Portland. If you've got the dough, they've got the best stuff. Michael Allen's is a close second. I remember the transformation that happened when I put my arms into my first Italian sport coats, when I realized that a great jacket could be an extension of the body, and something to wake up and look forward to putting on. Salesman greet their clients by their first name and offer them wine, share pictures of their latest trips to Italy, give advice on life, and everything in between. For me, Mario's has been a magic place full of sartorial possibility that has helped me define and express my own style. They changed my conception of dressing well from something foreign and restrictive that I only did for business meetings, to something natural and casual that was an expression of how I feel every day. Mario's gets five stars because they inspired a love and ongoing satisfaction for my purchases and because their level of service has forged a bond old-world customer loyalty. Tips: 1) Go to the trunk shows, held in the spring and fall. It can be intimidating if you are a new customer but there's no pressure to buy anything and they're designed to help you, and the reps are really nice. You can order what you want for the upcoming season from the designer's entire line, which is good if you need an unusual size, something made-to-measure, or something that Mario's won't be getting in the store and that no one else will have. 2) Best tailoring in town. Betsy and her crew have repeatedly pulled off the impossible, and they stand behind their work and their products. - One night I treated my Cucinelli slacks a little rough on the dance floor, and they fixed the ripped seam the next week without a quibble. read more

The Italian designers featured in here have names to swoop you off your feet and the selection of fabrics to make even the softest clothes in your closet to feel like burlap. It's one of my destinations whenever I'm in Seattle or Portland (especially Portland - no sales tax!). I've never had a challenge with the staff the way some reviewers in both cities have mentioned. I fully understand that at certain stores (especially large department stores) they are simply not staffed to provide highly attentive service. However, It is unclear to me what Mario's excuse is for completely lackluster (emphasis on lack) service. I went in last week really excited to partake in their winter sale, and upon entering the store faced a 2:1 sales/customer ratio. You would think that this would mean great service. In actuality, I got no service whatsoever. I was standing next to another customer perusing shirts when a salesperson walked over, greeted him only, and offered him a pellegrino while he shopped. He declined and the salesperson then let him know he would be nearby in case he needed anything or changed his mind. Without so much as even acknowledging me he then walked away. From there i walked over to the Prada section, where I stood for over five minutes trying on jackets, again without so much as a single salesperson coming over to see if they could cash in on a commission. I can honestly say this is the first time I ever left a store without buying a jacket that I really loved, all because of the pointedly horrible lack of service. I wish I had returned that afternoon with all my shopping bags Pretty Woman style, but I doubt they would have noticed or cared that I had reentered the store. read more

Mario's is like the older, less cutting edge Barney's (they even use the same mannequins) but their attention to detail, friendly staff and great eye for buying sets them apart from any other downtown store. There is just something about the artistry housed in this Palm Beach-esque setting that makes you feel like maybe Portland does know a little bit about style :) OOh... and they offered me and my entourage sparkling beverages, and truth be told some of us were not wearing our finest.... so no snobby sales people to report... totally key! read more

Let's me preface this review by saying that I've shopped at the Mario's in Seattle and had wonderful service there. I was looking forward to shopping at the Portland store and raved about the boutique to my friends with whom I was visiting Portland. I ended up having to apologize to them for the poor service and sparse inventory after our visit to Mario's in Portland. We were open to buy anything that looked great but also went looking for a few specific things: Christian Louboutin simple pumps in black Christian Louboutin evening pumps Christian Louboutin nude pumps flat boots for everyday Vince shearling collar cardigan Vince fur vest Moncler coat for winter Not only did we not find any of the things we were looking for, we didn't find anything else that piqued out interest. Very very little inventory or goods. They had about 15-20 pairs of shoes available, it was a joke. They did have the Vince cardigan but only in two sizes. The saleswoman said they just received the order but only two pieces, the two that were out. If you love Bruno Cucinelli there is a decent collection available, but I aspire to wear BC's clothing when I'm 60, not in my 30s. They do carry Lanvin, Stella, and The Row, but the buyer picked the styles that are geared for the 50+ woman, and there are few pieces in few sizes. Not only was the selection embarrassing but the sales help was downright offensive. Several women were grouped together gossiping while we walked around looking for sizes and holding shoes to try on. Only after we asked for help did someone try to fetch what we needed. Of course, no sizes were in stock. When we asked if we could leave our shipping and credit card info so that certain shoes could be shipped upon delivery, we were told they likely wouldn't remember to do it. I've honestly had better customer service at Target! This is a luxury retailer, they should provide stellar customer service. No offers of water or drinks, nothing. Maybe it's a one-off experience. Especially since I've had such good luck at their Seattle store. However, I won't be going back to Mario's in Portland during my next Spring shopping visit. read more
