The much touted croissants looked great from the outside but were just wet dough inside that no amount of rewarming could fix. The biscotti were crunchy, but had little taste. I really likes their variety of sweet, savory snacks or meals (something for every situation!) I ended up getting the smoke salmon sandwich which I enjoyed every bite of. Creaminess from the cheese, a little peppery bite from the arugula, refreshing crisp of the cucumber, smokiness from the salmon, and all held together well in the gluten free bread. SO happy to see them back in the Ferry building again! I know last year the doors were shuttered for some time so YAY science for them opening up again! There are vegan donuts, penguinos, raspberry bars, and more to choose. I came here for a vegan cupcake, but left with two more vegan goodies. In this trip, I also got a apple pie and tea cookies. I am a coffee lover and found the the mocha cupcake my favorite treat here. A lot has changed in eight years. Besides gaining knowledge and the increase in gluten issues with our population, I learned that this longtime Ferry Building business has expanded its menu immensely since my first visit. This became one of my shopping stops on Saturdays as a friend learned that she is gluten sensitive. In shopping, how could I go home without something for myself. In their refrigerated section, I noticed a family portion of one of my favorite (and Garfield too) foods, lasagna. This is a gluten free eaters dream. Everything is gluten free and they cater to many other allergies and dietary restrictions as well. Have a great selection of baked goods ready to grab and go, and can also have sandwiches or salads made to order. Took around 5 minutes or so for a sandwich during the week around 1:00 so I consider that very reasonable! I have mixed feelings. I bought a loaf of the sandwich and rye breads as well as three pastries, a vegan apple hand pie, a cherry turnover, and a cinnamon roll. The breads are both great! Five stars. Great flavor and excellent texture. Gluten free bread is usually too dense and crumbly and therefore terrible for sandwiches. Mariposa's breads are excellent and I would not have suspected they are gluten free. They have a great pull-apart bread-y texture and toast up perfectly. I've tried a lot of gluten free breads over 25 years of being gluten free and these are the best I've had by far. Now if only I could be that enthusiastic about the pastries.... Wow were they disappointing!! There's no nice way to put it. These are some of the worst gluten free baked goods I've ever had. No flavor. Bland bland bland. The pie and turnover crusts were dense and crumbly. Forget flakey and buttery. The cinnamon roll tasted ok, but was dense, dried out and completely lacked that sticky/chewy quality one expects from a cinnamon roll. I understand it's gluten-free but the contents of a sandwich usually don't have gluten so there's really no reason it shouldn't make up for the gf bread. The service was terrible. The girl at the counter acted as if we should know what we want already, like the ferry building isn't a big tourist destination and some of us haven't actually been to their little shop before. The girl making our sandwiches was taking her sweet time, probably waiting for the second coming of Christ or something. We waited and watched her move super slow and confused. We decided to walk across the entire ferry building and grab coffee at blue bottle. After placing our coffee order we walked back to grab our breakfast sandwiches and they *still* weren't ready. Keeping in mind one of them was a cold sandwich and there was ONE other person waiting ahead of us for their one item. They really need to train their staff better for customer service and efficiency because these people have never worked in quality food service and it shows. I came here today for the first time since being in SF and I am so happy I did. I have Celiac Disease, so finding *good* gluten free baked goods is a struggle. However, EVERYTHING here is gluten free!!! It was literal heaven! There was a bit of a line (a good sign!) and I ordered a bear claw, a bacon, olive, and cheese spiral, an apple cinnamon turnover pie, a cinnamon roll (which looked insane!), and 3 donut holes. After waiting a few minutes for them to warm my savory spiral up, and walked outside to try some of my goodies. First of all, the spiral baked goods was actually AMAZING. I'm not sure if I was just super hungry, but it was one of the best gluten free things I have had since getting diagnosed. The olive flavor was great, the bacon pieces were plentiful and well distributed, and the cheese made it super rich. If you come here, 100% get it (and make sure to get it warm) and you won't be disappointed!! As for the bear claw, it was good, but not life changing. I liked the almond flavor and the toasted almonds on top, but it was a bit heavy and dense for me. However, still solid! I then left and shared the rest of the goodies with my family. The apple turnover was super nostalgic and the pastry had an amazing flaky texture. One thing about Mariposa's baked goods is that they really have mastered making gluten free baked goods taste just like regular ones, if not better! The apple filling was warm and fragrant and delicious. If you like apple pie, give this a try! Now for the donut holes, they were good, but nothing super special. They had a great flavor, but were a bit too dense for me. The cinnamon role on the other hand? Just get it and you will be happy. It was by far the best thing I tried. The pastry and filling were equally amazing, and the icing was perfect. It was definitely sweet, and I loved it. Overall, I 100% recommend Mariposa. Best chocolate chip bagel I have had in my life. Doughy, yeasty, with sweet chocolate chips. The texture reminded me more of a cake doughnut than a bagel. I dream about it. While there are many vegan/ allergen friendly baked goods, lunch/ meal options are more meat/ vegetarian (containing dairy) forward. There is no seating, it is take-away style. However, there are dining tables in the center of the Ferry Terminal overlooking the bay, you can take your goods to enjoy by the water! Attendants were patient with me deciding and drooling over what I wanted to try. The chocolate chip bagel was sooo good (had to say it again) and their homemade graham crackers really elevated my afternoon coffee-pick me up. After just passing up a single 10 dollar muffin at a shop that shall not be named, I made a beeline to the side door and just as I was about the hit the fresh air the smell of baked goods wafted over from Mariposa. Through the glass I spotted a wedge-shaped almond cheddar scone that was bigger than the bougie muffin and half the price! At the moment there was no line and I enthusiastically placed my order and got it to go in thirty seconds flat. Then it was out the door to enjoy my scone in the sunshine. I ate about half of it and put the rest back in the bag for later. When I was home I zapped it in the microwave and it was even better! I see another reviewer advises that you can request for the food to be heated up, and I would recommend this. Literally obsessed with this bakery! Yes, it is expensive. But everything is completely gluten free and delicious, so I will gladly pay a few dollars more than I would for a not so great pastry elsewhere so I can enjoy my life lol. Very sad I don't live in the Bay Area where I can just stop by and grab things at will, but luckily they do have a website and delivery! #1 The chocolate croissants are literally amazing and taste very close to what real croissants taste like -- I feel like they really nailed this. Try it warmed up :) it's so good. They are slightly dense at the center, but given they're gluten free, they get a 10/10 on this. #2 I also tried the cheddar scone, which is crazy delicious. I suggest getting this heated up/toasted as well! #3 Also tried the bearclaw which was also amazing. My husband who is not gluten-free enjoyed all of the above with me and said for the most part you can't tell! I also had the coffee cake which was good but a little dry, and tried the almond horns which were just okay. My only suggestion the the bakery is it would be nice if they kept meat products away from the rest of their items, and had a separate station for handling meat from the vegetarian items. I wanted to try their spinach pockets but they were placed on the same tray as the ham pastry, so I wasn't able to. Their gluten free scones, croissants, and biscotti were perfect. I've been gf for years, and it's hard to find gluten free bakes that taste as good as their wheat based counterparts. When I tell you that these were the best I've ever had, I'm not joking or exaggerating. The currant almond scone was the best scone I've ever had in my life. My non-gf husband even raved about it. The croissant was light and fluffy and the biscotti were crisp and delicious. I've tried to make my own gf croissants and I've ordered from other bakeries, and they were always heavy or the wrong texture. These were perfection. I'm rationing the biscotti to enjoy with my morning coffee. Again, the crisp texture is perfect. I'm still in awe of how good these are. And the people working there were so kind and helpful. I was kinda overwhelmed having so many choices of gf breakfast, and they recommended the scones. They didn't steer me wrong. Cute little shop in the ferry building. I have had celiac disease since 2017 and have spent a good portion of the last 4 years looking for good gluten free bakeries. Every bakery has something special about it, whether it be something another bakery doesn't offer or a welcoming atmosphere. Mariposa is the best gluten free bakery I have ever been to. Considering I've been across Europe and the US trying different locations, I think that's a pretty big title! I have tried almost everything Mariposa has to offer and it is all incredible. My favorites are their ravioli, croissants, ham and cheese pocket, or anything on their lunch menu! If you aren't local to SF or Oakland, delivery is also a good option. I have had their croissants delivered before and it was great! Even if you aren't gluten free, the food is incredible. My family and boyfriend are not gluten free and still love to eat here.
