Booked the Living History Tour which lasted ~70 minutes and was led by a costumed actor. Even though it was raining, we enjoyed this experience. Our actor/tour guide portrayed Katie, one of the servants in the house. She told interesting stories and facts about Mark Twain, his family and the house. Pictures were not allowed during the tour except at the last part/basement and outside the house. Parking was not a problem as there was a lot before entering the museum which can lead to Mark Twain's house. There's a 20+ minute introductory video (separate from the tour) that you can see in the museum. The gift shop has magnets, t-shirts, other clothes, books, toys, pins, snacks, etc. There's also a cafe in the museum. This house/museum is about 20 minutes away from Bradley International (Hartford) airport. Would recommend this tour! read more

Visited the adult home of this famous child of the Mississippi River, during the final days of our trip to Connecticut. It was a very enjoyable experience. My wife and I were flying out of the Hartford airport (Bradley International) to go back home, so decided to spend the day before in the area. A popular tourist attraction is the Mark Twain (two fathoms or 12 feet deep) House & Museum, so decided to center our day around that. Maps will take you right to it, passing by large and beautiful homes from the turn of the (19th) century. The end destination was a large parking with plenty of spaces on a Friday afternoon. Daily hours are 9:30 - 5:30, with seeing the house only available through guided tours, so it was recommended to pre-reserve slots online. There are two versions of the tour, both guided but with the less frequent Living History Tour being led by a cosplay actor. We arrived at 11:20 and was able to get tickets for the 11:30 normal tour (on this day, the normal tour had hours at 9:45, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 12:00, 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, 3:00, 3:30, 4:00, and 4:15). Because the tour lasts about an hour, there were multiple groups in the house at the same time, but it is big enough to absorb the three concurrent groups, all seeing different parts of the home. The entire home is maintained only by ticket admission ($28 adult, $26 senior, $15 children). This was the home where he spent the most productive 17 years of his life, raising his three daughters with his wife, and writing his classics, including Huckleberry Finn. The house tour included all four stories of his home, with complete restoration being just completed in 2016. Rules: no photos or videos inside the house; don't touch anything, stay in same room as guide at all times, and no food/drink. The house was built with forced air vents, and the AC was working well within the house this day. Upstairs on the second floor was the living area, and the 3rd story attic was where Twain had his offices. The basement were the servant quarters. The entire house was fully furnished with either originals or faithful reproductions. We later learned that much of it had been given away initially, but the restoration brought much of it back. There are no elevators in the Twain home. In the visitor center, anybody could enjoy a 20 minute version of Mark Twain documentary by Ken Burns. The most celebrated Mark Twain actor was Hal Holbrook (he played a mean Lincoln too), and his very familiar voice could be heard quite a bit throughout. The souvenir shop in the visitor center had a variety of things related to his life, but to the hobby of reading for pleasure in general. There were distinctive wallpaper patterns inside the house (our favorite was that of a honeybee colony), and the same patterns could be purchased as paper in the gift shop. Because the main house is on elevated ground, one story above the visitor center, there are two parking areas. The main one near the visitor center is what Maps will guide you to, whereas the much smaller one south of the house at the same elevation is meant for handicapped spots and being much smaller, will fill up. We did see if we could walk from this parking area via local roads, but found it was much easier to just go back from where we came. We spent about 2 hours here, and saw what we wanted to see. I knew Mark Twain was a great writer, but after visiting this museum I learned so much more about his life, his family, his struggles and his legacy. The main building has a beautiful lobby where we purchased the living history tour tickets. In this area they have the statues of MT, the gift shop, restrooms and cafeteria on the second floor. The garden and walkway between the building and MT's house is also a wonderful area. Our tour guide was playing the character of an acquaintance of MT taking us to show his home for auction. He maintained his character really well until the end of the tour, telling us all the stories and facts about MT and his family from the character's perspective and timeline of around 1900s. The house itself was really cool to see. We went thru all the rooms in 3 different floors, final gathering in the basement where the exit is located as well. Wonderful tour in Mark Twain house. We got the Living History Tour (a little bit more expensive). The tour guy dressed as a Twain's friend and gave detail history regarding Mark Twain and friends/family dynamics throughout the time. The house/furniture are in great condition. No photography inside the house. It's a long tour involving going up and downstairs. They are very thoughtful and put out some chairs throughout the house for those who need it. I recommend it when you visit Hartford CT. It's a good place to learn more about the famous author. An amazing historic and gorgeous home of author Mark Twain that has been meticulously restored and saved. Guided tours only for the home, but one is free to walk the grounds and visit the small museum and gift shop. No photos or videos allowed in the home. The regular guided tour takes about 1 hour. Our tour guide Justin was passionate, knowledgeable and humorous. You could spend all day here, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe house is right next to it. It's wonderful to get a glimpse back in time and learn the struggles and succeses that were part of one family and one author's lifetime story. You don't need to be a literary genius (Samuel Clemens had to drop out of school at 12 to help support his family) or even a Mark Twain fan to visit (that just adds to the exoerience). SUPER bummed about not being able to take photos inside the house, simply because it's unique and enchanting. A mantle bought from a castle overseas. An ornate bed arranged in a bizarre fashion. Stenciling created with the assistance of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Wallpaper that uses amazing illustrations to tell dark fairytales. About half the furniture is original, as it was all auctioned off when Twain sold the house, and you don't know which half for the most part. But all of it is gorgeous and you can still see the Twains living there, telling stories, playing the piano, writing, reading, throwing parties. Our guide was very nice and knew her stuff, but you're going to get the most out of this tour if you know a little bit about history and know which questions to ask, or how to ask questions. For example, I have visited the US Grant home where he wrote his memoirs and died. In the back of my mind, I knew there was a connection. I noticed in the gift shop, there were US Grant books. Then in the house, I saw a US Grant bust, so I asked for the connection. And the guide reminded me that Twain helped Grant publish his autobiography at the end of his life, to support his widow, Julia. The guide, Rebecca, pointed out a nearby frame, holding one of the checks (for 200K!) written for Julia. That never would have happened if I hadn't asked that question. The most interesting information came from good questions. The gift shop is WONDERFUL! Great books, fun postcards, boardgames and puzzles. I found two notebooks to buy a friend for Christmas. I found another fun book on profanity for a friend who likes to curse. The attendant was really pleasant. The museum itself is okay. It's a little sparse (random objects like swim suits, a horse model, a canoe--but keep in mind, they rotate). I went to the museum first due to the way my schedule fell, but honestly, I think it would be better viewed AFTER the house. The objects, not necessarily tied to Twain, would have been better appreciated after learning more about the family and their life. It's near the Harriet Beecher Stowe home and center, so you can do that as well if you like. I paid like 28 bucks and now need to rabbit hole about Mark Twain. This is how museums and historical sites should be--inspire you to dig deeper and continue the conversation after you depart. read more

This was an amazing experience. My first trip here although it's been on my radar for some time. I finally took the initiative and went alone. So happy I did. I was blessed with a tour guide that was PHENOMENAL. She happened to be the assistant manager of the facility. The level of details and the intimate story telling about the Clemens family was amazing. We even learned about some of their visitors and servants. I absolutely would recommend anyone visit. There are some interactive elements like movies to watch, items to hold and examine, and an embossing plate of Mark Twain's image. The outdoor space is phenomenal for a picnic or walk. Even entering you can choose the picturesque stairs or a garden entrance that is wheelchair accessible. The house itself is breathtaking- I can't believe the wall paper that they used in those days. All the ornate wooden furniture- sooo beautiful. I plan to come back for the holidays as the exhibits do seasonly change. And I want to take some of the specialty tours. All in all this is a great glimpse into the past and very interesting to see and learn about Mark Twains life. read more

Visited the Mark Twain museum for the After Dark Paranormal tour. Pictures are permitted in the museum exhibit, but NOT in the home of Mark Twain. We could have easily stayed at-least 2 hours just reading the information before entering the home. There are two floors to the museum before entering the home (40 steps or elevator for accessibility). The first floor gives a historical background of Mark Twain aka Samual Clemons and how his writings and well know novels, Huckleberry Finn and the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, became such a mark in history. The second floor is a a more intimate journey through the life of Mark Twain and his family. The house itself was absolutely breathtaking. The artistry and architecture of the home is beautiful and well crafted. Everything is so detailed and the arboretum is stunning. We learned that Mark Twain had a knack for the paranormal. I am happy I visited the Mark Twain Museum. I took the short bus ride from central downtown. The tours are timed and happen pretty frequently throughout the day. You pay at the register and once your tour starts you are taken throughout the property, first starting at the exterior and then going into the house. Photography is not allowed inside the house and masks are required during the tour. During the tour there is history of the house and Mr. Twain's life along with history of his family as well. Some of the pieces inside the house are originals and some are not. The tour guide was very helpful in answering questions and informative during the tour. I was iffy on visiting here because I wasn't sure how my day would be like in Hartford, but if you have two hours or so to spare you won't regret visiting it. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our Living History tour led by a live actor speaking in the style of 1903 and telling stories not only about the gorgeous home but also about Mark Twain's friendship with Joseph Twitchell, the local pastor and his neighbor. We could not take pictures inside but every room had a name and purpose, with beautiful wallpaper and wood panel detailing on the walls and ceiling. The Clemens household was known for their hospitality, and often hosted guests from out of town. My favorite was the Mahogany Room for guests which had a honeycomb/bee pattern on the walls and spiderweb/bee pattern on the ceiling. The billiards room on the 3rd floor was where Mark Twain did a lot of his writing as well as entertained friends. The kitchen on the first floor has a dumbwaiter to go between the laundry area in the basement, as well as the remnants of the speaking tube system the family could use to communicate with the staff. This is a small museum and a large home. There is a couple different tour options to choose from. There is a small free parking lot prior to heading up the stairs or walking path to the entrance. There is a small store and you can purchase any of his books among other items. There is a 20 minute video, you can watch about his history. I took the General House Tour which is about an hour. It was cool but the only downside was that you weren't able to take photos inside the house. It was fun to spend a little time in the home of a great storyteller and traveler. read more

We attended a living history tour with Livy Clemens (aka Beth in the present day), who was a spectacular tour guide. Within about two minutes, the entire tour group was under her spell, never doubting that she WAS Livy. Seeing the gorgeous, perfectly restored house through her eyes and learning the history of the family from her perspective was fascinating. She even asked if she could practice playing for us the piano piece she had memorized so she wouldn't be so nervous playing in front of guests at her upcoming piano recital! Livy/Beth was so gracious and patient with my mom, who needed a little extra time getting up and down the stairs. (For other visitors, it might be helpful to know that there are railings on BOTH sides of the main staircase that leads up to the 2nd and 3rd floors, but the kitchen staircase only has a railing on the left.) And Beth even stayed after the tour to answer "modern-day" questions once she was no longer portraying Livy. We would love to come back and take another tour with Livy or any of the other actors who expertly bring this gorgeous national treasure to life. read more

The home of Mark Twain is here in Hartford, Connecticut. This is where Samuel Langhorne Clemens (as you know, Mark Twain's real name) and his family lived from 1874 to 1891. He lived in a 25 room Victorian gothic style mansion. It was here in this home that he wrote some of his famous novels that includes The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and The Pauper and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This home opened in 1974 for public tours. It was declared a national landmark in the 1960's. Photos and video is not allowed inside the home during a tour. But inside, my husband and I took a general tour on a Tuesday late morning ($23 per person online, as it is highly recommended to purchase ahead of time). But inside you see a lot of beautiful mahogany wood throughout the furniture, cabinets, door knobs, tables, chairs, bed posts ,etc. The tour last about 60 minutes and you are able to tour several rooms in the home including bedrooms, the kitchen, office room, etc. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable but felt that he was rather stiff in delivery and felt like he was reciting a script from memory. His jokes also seemed a bit forced. But I did learn a lot about Mark Twain's life during the tour. During the 17 years of living in this home, Mark Twain had been known to say about this home that this was the best home he had. Due to his publishing company flopping, Mark Twain was forced to leave his beloved home for Europe with his family so that he could live cheaply and hope that his wife's, Olivia Langdon Clemens, health could improve since she was ill. Towards the ending years of Mark Twain's life, he had the worse of luck with his family and was most likely very sad and angry, which shows in the books he had written during that period of his life. In 1896, his daughter Jean was diagnosed with epilepsy. His wife's health was getting worse. She ended up passing away in 1904 from a possible heart attack. Then Jean had passed away in 1909. During the same year, his other daughter, Clara had gotten married a few months before and had moved to the US to be with her husband. Mark Twain did have a son but had died of diphtheria, after only living for 19 months. He also had another daughter that died at a young age. It really was a series of depressing events that occurred in Mark Twains life after he moved to Europe and out of his home in Hartford. Mark Twain died in 1910 from a heart attack. After our tour (we were in a pretty big group of maybe 18- 20 people. I was surprised to see a much smaller group after us), we were brought back outside of the home and were told that we could take as many photos on the outside as we wanted and can come back through the museum when we are done. This was nice because since we visited early last month, the leaves had the nice color change of fall and really made for a beautiful background. Anyway, back in the museum is a small art gallery on the 2ndfloor. Downstairs you are able to watch a short video (it may have been 16- 17 minutes long?) about Mark Twain's life. Then across from there you can read through a timeline of his literary work. There is also a gift shop at the entrance of the building. Overall, I think we had a good time touring the home and learning more in depth about Mark Twain's life. If you were a fan reading the many books that Mark Twain wrote during your childhood, this may be a place to add to your list of places to visit. read more

I enjoyed this so much! We went on the haunted tour of the house. About 12 years back Ghost Hunters learned about the spiritual residents at the Twain house and they now offer special tours around spooky season. These are nice spirits, so no need to fear a visit to chat with them at the Twain house. The house is so beautiful. I could have stayed in it forever with or without the spirits. The library has an attached solarium with plants and a fountain! I heard music from the family music box playing while in this room. That was the most significant spiritual experience I had while touring the house. We also went through parts of the museum and I really enjoyed the showing they had of prisoner and former prisoner art work. As a public defender investigator, I know how special the art work produced by those incarcerated is to them and the deep meaning it has to share with the free world. I was overjoyed to see it displayed in the museum. I also loved stopping by the gift shop and picking up some souvenirs to enjoy and remind me of my visit and just how much I love Samual Langhorne Clemens! Given to this world near the visit by Hailey's Comet and he left us 74 years later as Hailey's Comet came back through. He will always be a great American treasure! Awesome historical house in CT! Prior to visiting, I didn't know much about Mark Twain, but I've always enjoyed learning about history so I thought I'd check it out I went on a Tuesday afternoon, and when you arrive there's adequate parking in the lot, which is free. You enter through the visitor center, which has a small gift shop, restrooms, and several exhibits with historical objects related to Mark Twain. There is also a small movie theater with a 20-ish minute film about Twain's life To go inside the actual Mark Twain house, you need to take a guided tour. The general house tour is $26 for an adult, and is about an hour long. The tour guide then brings you into the house where you will tour most of the rooms and learn some fascinating information about Twain's life and his family. Keep in mind that the house is three floors, so you will need to go up and down several flights of stairs. There is no photography of any kind allowed inside the house. My tour guide was very knowledgeable and was able to answer any questions that were asked. After the tour, you are free to roam the grounds and take photos of the outside of the house. You can also go back into the visitor center and check out the exhibits, watch the short film, etc. I would recommend allotting 45-minutes to an hour before or after your tour to see the exhibits and watch the film (the visitor center closes at 4:30PM). Also buy your tickets online in advance ($2 convenience fee per ticket) as there is a limit for the number of people on each tour. A cool piece of local history right that I would highly recommend! This museum is aesthetically pleasing. When you walk in, there is a counter to check in, a movie to watch about Mark Twain's life to prep you for the rest of the experience, and a couple exhibits. Matt, I think his name was Matt, he was a younger gentleman, was our tour guide. The tour consisted of about 8 people, including my mom and I. Matt was extremely knowledgeable and I enjoyed listening to him tell us about Mark Twain, his house, family, and life. He was also very personable and after the tour got to know us a little bit. Unfortunately, you couldn't take photos of Mark Twain's actual house. I fell in love with the foyer of Twain's house. It was breathtaking. The entire house was pretty awesome, including the conservatory. Due to COVID, we purchased our tickets a week in advance to make sure we were able to tour and for safety reasons you have to purchase your tickets in advance. There is free parking. A trip to Hartford isn't complete without stopping at Mark Twain House & Museum! We did the final tour of the day, which last about an hour. By the time the final tour ended, the museum was closed. I was surprised by the history of both Mark Twain, his family, and their connection with the house. The Mark Twain house is a perfect little stop if you're walking around downtown Hartford and looking for some unique history and back story into some of your favorite childhood books. We booked a tour, which is preceded with a brief video. We came to learn that Mark Twain (born Samuel Langhorne Clemens) leaned heavily on his memories growing up, putting his life into his books. He grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a small frontier village on the banks of the Mississippi River, and after some extensive traveling and writing, he built this large house here in CT. The house itself is three stories and the museum sits on the first floor. The whole tour plus a quick walk around the grounds took us a little under two hours. Highly recommended! read more

We had a lovely visit. The tour was interesting and informative, and they were accommodating even though we were a few minutes late. We booked our tour ahead of time. The house itself is beautiful and well preserved. The visitors center and gift shop were great as well. Make time for them before or after your tour as they have educational exhibits. Overall tour was very interesting. Had a bit of trouble checking in with our group of 6. Had to refund and recharge. Still waiting on refund 3 days later. Nice house and friendly staff. Would recommend but felt a little pricey for an hour. read more
