The shop is only a few years old but is already firmly established with in the local community if you wanted a fireplace or stove. There is some parking outside the store but more if you park down one of the side roads. The shop offer good quality but competitive prices gas and stove fires. We recently went with some friends to look at coal and log burners in an attempt to reduce the present gas and electric prices. Although they had sold out of the style we wanted a near match was found or we could wait for fire to be restockedit seems we are all thinking along the same lines. The staff were great offering a full service if required, from building work, gas pipes removing to installing the log burner.

Along with Wetherells recent refurbishments, Dorothy Perkins now looks and fits in better with the modern surroundings. The clothing offered by Dorothy Perkins is high street priced, which is higher than most stores in Selby, but there is a market for them. Dorothy Perkins still manage to find there 'feet' within the Selby economy by offering a brand name with higher quality goods. There is a wide selection of separates for day wear and a good range for your night around town too. The staff are friendly.

A Wetherell & Sons is a family owned store that prides its self on its personal service and good customer service. Quite recently the store has benefited from a major refurbishment which to be honest was desperately required to take it out of the 'Grace Brothers' look to a more contemporary one. The new look store is fresher, brighter with new modern fittings and decor. The window displays are greatly improved as it the signage. I had a look at the clothing the other day and the brand names are quality ones as before but aided by the modern surroundings fit much better in the store. The Cafe has always been really good, much like the whole store but only now you can see it.

It has everytthing you would expect from an Argos store including the bored looking staff who seemed to be employed purely to stamp your reciept when your purchase rolls down the conveyer belt. They do have some new self service tills which are great and you can pay by card in seconds without having to queue up at the checkouts although to be fair I have never queued at an Argos. So its Argos basically, been to one been to them all!

Wilkinson's is on the Abbey Walk Shopping Centre next to Sainsbury's supermarket. There is a fair…read moresized car park with 2-hours free parking. The first ever Wilkinson was opened in Leicester in 1930, since those days over 300 more stores have opened across the country. The original formula of quality low cost products is still present but you will find some of the toys and things are a bit too plastic or cheap! Wilkinson's sell almost anything, from toiletries, DIY and minor repair equipment, garden plants, bulbs and accessories, furniture, beddings, toys and sweets, to mention but a few. Recently the Selby branch introduced food products, which are convenient and competitively prices with the likes of Home Bargains. The current recession will probably push Wilkinson's forward as we are all looking to spend less.

In the town there are several Pay and Display car parks. A1 toys has recently reduced the floor space available to toys to about half its size which is such a shame as we used to buy quite a few toys from them. I always preferred to support the family run department store than other national companies. The sports section has also been reduced to fit in with the toy section. This move has been resent and hopefully when they clear a lot of the bitty stock in the sales more fuller lines will improve the layout. This can be a good store and one to check out in the future. The prices are always on the fair.

Good old Peacocks its like an expensive Primark. Since it came to Selby a few years ago it has done…read morewell, the combination of cheap clothing and attempts to keep up with the latest fashions has ensured its a winner on the tight old yorkshiremen of Selby (me included). As mentioned, the prices are great and although the mens section is much smaller compared to the ladies it does still seem to ram in a massive amount of clothes. I have to say 90% of it isn't to my tastes at all and some looks a little cheap (yeah i know they are cheap but doesn't mean they have to look it!) but if you search hard enough you will find something you like i'm sure. The staff are a miserable bunch on the whole and are usually found behind the till but for a store like this you don't expect exceptional service so they do the job nicely. All in a all a good shop for Selby and some nice bargains to be had if you look hard enough.

Peacocks arrived in Selby when the new shopping area opend in the 1990's adding their department store look. The Selby branch has become quite sucessful with little in their way of competition for the up-to-the fashion low price trends. We have the New Look store in Selby but they are significally more expensive. As far as products, they cater for men, women and children, in clothing, shoes, Underwear, sleep wear and accessories. I tend to buy quite a few pair of jeans there that start from about £5 and wash well! Peacocks are postioned well, in a busy walk-way with Wilkinsons and now the new Sainsbury's store next to them. Although we are now entereing difficult financial times, I think more discerning customers are being savvy with their money and will seek out stores like Peacocks that are offering a one-stop-shop for fashion on the cheap.
