There is a cafe at the front which just looked like a standard supermarket cafeteria but the toilets next to it were stinking. Not to mention that they are horrid and small. At least they have a family butcher, a bakery, a pizza counter and a deli along the back wall which makes up for the run down feel of the place. But the place always feels dead because everyone that shops in the Gyle is off at the other end doing their grocery shop at the epic M&S superstore and not here in the dingy Morrisons. I will only be in here if Starbucks, Costa and the M&S Café are full. If they give it a state of the art refurbishment, I will return.

The shop itself is a bit of a cross between a grocers and a corner shop which makes it a very useful shop to visit as you are passing to pick up a drink, newspaper and maybe a few fresh fruits or vegetables for that days dinner. This really is the only way you can pick up fresh food without it going off as unless it's been treated it doesn't last a week very long. The prices here are reasonable and the range of good on offer is very good so the shop does serve its local area and especially passers by very well.

But for spices/ herbs this is not it. I did purchase a few but they were twice the cost of tescos and with the dust on the packaging it was apparent they'd been sitting there a while. It's slightly bigger than your generic convenience store and there is a selection of fruits and veg on offer if you happen to be nearby. Service was friendly, can't really fault it overall.

Upon checkout we were curious about the irn-bru in the bin next to the counter so we asked the lady who was checking folks out. She was sweet and explained that it was just something we had to try but it was too hard to explain. Enough said - we brought one home to try! I'm in two minds about this place…read more Scotmids in general have decent stock, including plenty of GF and lactose free items and they give discount vouchers every now and then which often give £2 off if you spend over £10 (not too shabby!). There's a decent range of cheeses, often including some which are locally made. I also like their own brand stuff, which is decent quality. This particular Scotmid has recently had a revamp and now includes an area with fresh baked bread, a vegetable rack with your 'not your usuals' next to all the 'normal' vegetables, a pastry/pie counter next to the tills and a self-service check out area. All these things make me think that Scotmid wants to be more 'Waitrose' than 'Tesco Express'. However, they are pricier than Tesco, likely because most of what they sell is sourced locally. It sometimes surprises me how quickly the price goes from a few quid to the average £13-17 I spend here. I can live with the price, I don't have to shop here after all, but one thing that kind of makes me lose patience is the staff. On the tills that staff are wonderful, they ask you about your day and are always lovely, fostering a sense of community in the local shop. In the aisles however the staff have a habit of having personal conversations (not 'guess what I found my husband doing last night?' but more 'I was watching Breaking Bad and I couldn't believe the bit where the thing happened!') and you occasionally feel you are intruding if you need to reach between them to grab your milk. This is probably a consequence of the friendly atmosphere and general friendliness about the place but it has tried my patience more than once! Overall though I like this Scotmid and I'm glad it's my local!

The store is reasonably small, and the stock isn't great, I wasn't able to find the particular type of milk I was looking for but was able to seek a reasonable alternative. The checkout area was straightforward and easy, with a staff member on hand to help at the many self-service checkouts, it is disappointing that this store does not support Marks and Spencer's mobile scanning and payment, which would be particularly useful, due to being a travel location, where shoppers would want to get in and out quickly to catch a train. 3* - The location and service are both good, while the stock is the bare minimum and could be better, but still one of the better places to get a small selection of groceries in the evening compared to alternatives nearby.

I grabbed a clean, and huge, bowl of mixed greens that also included radish, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and large leaves of romaine lettuce... And then I also selected a package of plain poached salmon and a package of lemon her grilled salmon (2 fillets per package)... On top of that I also got some marinated artichoke hearts and more cherry tomatoes... Hey what else am I going to do on the train, right? Well, even though I wasn't all that hungry when our train finally left the station, I still chowed down, finishing every little bit. The amount of food I could certainly could have fed four people, but ha, not when my chompers are in the picture! This particular Marks and Spencer is just for food, and is the perfect size. The aisles are wide enough for 2 or even 3 people to pass comfortably and everything is laid out clearly. Unlike most other Marks and Spencer's in Edinburgh, this one is never really too busy so it's a nice experience rather than a stressful one. If you ever need or fancy food shopping in Marks and Sparks, this is the one to come to.

They have a hot food cabinet which I picked up a box of macaroni and cheese for £3. The coop are very good at labelling their good if it is vegetarian, it is how I wish all shops would be.

It's also on my walk home from work, so I pop in a few times a week for little bits and pieces. Like most Tesco's you do pay more for your goodies than say Asda, and as this is a mini Tesco then add a bit more onto the price. But I'm usually always able to get Genius GF seeded bread here and some GF biscuits so that what makes it a winner. So, great for little essentials if you live locally and friendly staff
