The morning café latte was delicious, and the eggs and assorted hams were especially tasty. I was pleasantly surprised to find white fish and salmon available in the morning as well, as this isn't the case for breakfast in the US. Everything was fresh and truly delicious. But what impressed me most was the warm welcome from the female waitstaff when we entered the restaurant in the morning. They greeted us with bright smiles with "Guten Morgen!" "Would you like coffee?" Their genuine smiles left the best impression of our stay at this hotel. We also had dinner at the same restaurant, and it was excellent. I had a schnitzel with French fries and sauerkraut, and he had three kinds of sausages with potatoes and sauerkraut. Everything was absolutely delicious, and we were very happy! Our dinner table was served by a Vietnamese staff member. Perhaps it was because I am Asian? I am a Japanese person who resides in the US by the way. At check in, we were assisted by a German woman at the front desk, but the person who guided us to our room in the annex building was also Vietnamese staff member. I wondered if it might have been simply because of the look, and they thought I would feel better to be assisted by someone who is also Asian? Of course, Vietnamese and Japanese are quite different--perhaps as different as Germans and French-- this may have been a well-intentioned assumption based on appearance rather than necessity. That said, I personally had no issue with it and assumed they meant well. However, it would also have been perfectly fine if a German gentleman who was serving the table near us also took care of our table.

My stay came with breakfast, typical European foods, everything was tasty especially the cappuccino! I added parking at 18€ per night, they have a private lot with a gentleman that takes you by golf cart. You can't access your car without this man. Driving into the walled city is quite hectic, people walking everywhere and the roads are narrow so beware. And accessing the front door of the hotel check in is done in the lane.

Imagine if you could travel back in time to the Middle Ages…read more The year is 1634. The medieval city of Rothenburg (meaning "Red Fortress") is a walled city perched high on the Bavarian hills. It has seen centuries of dynastic rise and falls, the Black Death, and a WWII assault that nearly wiped out the entire town. Now imagine present day stepping off the train station and into this most preserved city as if nothing has changed for the past 500 years...how spectacular that must be! When I walked into Rothenburg, I was instantly transported back in time. The townspeople were dressed from the 1600's, horse-and-carriages were trotting in the Old Town Square, and the Night Watchman with his hellebarde (axe-like weapon) was doing his rounds. Of all the hotels to stay in this fantasy world, I would tip my medieval hat to the incomparable Hotel Spitzweg. The accommodations itself are comfortable and quaint, but it's the man behind the counter that makes the stay most memorable. Mr. Herr Hocher is a host unlike any other. If you see him, he looks and acts like Santa Claus. Robust and truly pleasant, Herr goes above and beyond to please his "guests" (and you truly are a guest in his home-- he and his wife live there). He cooks breakfast every morning for his 10-roomed family using the wild mushrooms he grew in his garden to make his delicious soft omelettes. Fresh fruit, sliced breads, crackling bacon and ham are all neatly presented to appease his international visitors. The rooms are cared for by the sweet husband-and-wife team with so much love and attention, you can feel it in every wonderful night's rest. His son, Mike Hocher, runs his own business just a ways down the road but will come by to visit. At any hour of the day, you can call on their family members to assist with directions, information, or just enjoyable conversation! My bf Ikaika on our last day there played a good ol' game of chess with Mr. Hocher with a bottle of beer in hand. To save my boyfriend's ego, let's just say Herr was on a lucky, winning streak. ;) Every Christmas since our visit in 2011, Mr. Hocher has kept correspondence with us sending beautiful cards, pictures, and authentic German greetings. I return the gesture with Hawaiian greeting cards and Hawaiian Host Macadamia Nut Chocolates. It is my wish to return to this beautifully preserved town one day, maybe during Christmastime or with kids of our own to see one of Germany's best kept secret... Mr. Hocher.

I wouldn't recommend it for the more older crowd Would definitely stay there again!

I don't think there are more than a dozen rooms, and there are only three levels with no elevator. Not that any of that is a bad thing, I just want to make sure you know what to expect. You could actually consider the small size of the hotel to be a good thing, since it really helps set the mood for staying in the quaint town of Rothenburg. Walking into our room, it had a level of comfort and antiquity that felt like you were maybe visiting Grandma, instead of staying at the Four Seasons - both will take care of you with much comfort and indulgence, but there's definitely a huge difference between the two. Despite the antique feel of the room, it was very comfortable, and the bathroom struck me as surprisingly modern. The staff was super friendly and helpful, above and beyond in my opinion. It was also quite a good location in the old town of Rothenburg. I also appreciated their free wi-fi access!

A Flawless Stay at the Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Greifen…read more The Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Greifen provided an absolutely excellent two-night experience in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Honestly, I cannot say enough good things about this hotel; it was a perfect base for exploring this stunning town. The location could not have been better. Situated within a stone's throw of the main square, we were ideally placed to enjoy everything Rothenburg has to offer without unnecessary walking. While the central location is a massive advantage, I do want to offer a word of advice on arrival: finding the designated parking lot was a bit difficult. When the GPS led us up a small, narrow alley, we were sure we were lost! However, once we were parked and walked over, the minor initial confusion was instantly forgotten thanks to the hotel staff. The staff and service were consistently exceptional from start to finish. The check-in process was quick, efficient, and genuinely friendly. We were made to feel welcome immediately. Our room itself was beautiful--large, perfectly clean, and flawless. We chose to eat dinner at the hotel's restaurant, and it was as perfect as the hotel room, the staff, and the location. The service was attentive, and the atmosphere was lovely. The second treat of our stay was the breakfast. It featured homemade everything, a fantastic variety, and, again, the staff and service did not disappoint. If you are looking for an impeccable stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, look no further than the Hotel-Gasthof Goldener Greifen.

I'm not sure if they were just understaffed or strangely busy for the hour but it took us forever to just order drinks and then quite a bit longer to order food. Definitely could do without sitting next to the mosquito infested fountain but all in all it was good food.
