This place needs some sizzle to go with their steak. Stopped in specifically looking for possibly…read moresome good olive oils and dried pasta. The dried pasta choices consisted of... not very much. Ended up taking some pricey garden variety spaghetti noodles, actually what I was looking for and they did the job just fine for my needs. The store is sort of underwhelming visually and the presentation of the prepared foods sort of the same. We eat with our eyes, too. Service was just... at its more basic blandest. No attempt to show interest or make small talk. OK I guess, but light years from what I received at Olives and More not far from here so even though they don't compete on all levels, easy to pick where I'd return and where I won't. I like the idea of what's going on here but the people running it seem to have a different idea about what makes up a retail space. Can't imagine this kind of experience in Italy, and yes, I have travelled there.

What shall I say about the fairly new place in town? The Italian Bistro Project is authentic: an…read moreItalian couple moved around Europe to make Amsterdam their home and the place to share their delicacies. Menu is small and contains just a few sandwiches and meals, but the food is real Italian. The couple is also super friendly and takes time to proudly present what is offered. The reason why my rating is only 3 stars is the following. First of all it takes quite long to get the order. I was initially the only customer and the first to order, but still it took 20 minutes for 3 sandwiches. Yes, a lot of love and time was put in it. But 20 minutes for a sandwich to go is too long. Your sandwich is prepared in the kitchen in the back, so be prepared to see the chefs disappear for minutes and just trust they will be back. Secondly, the place looks like they moved in yesterday. When I asked how long ago they moved in, they answered: "5 months ago!!" Wow, either they have been REALLY busy, or the focus is REALLY on the food. The nice thing about Italian places usually is the nice atmosphere and decorations, which this place, according to my taste, lacks. Lastly, the price is a bit high. If you just look for a place to get a nice bread or meal to take away and have some patience, try this out. For me for now it will be 3 stars, but I will come back to order other food and reconsider.

This one is a classic "hidden gem." It's a bit of a local legend, even if it's not your usual…read morescene. If you find yourself in the Waterlooplein metro station, you have to stop here. It's not your typical "dinner out" spot--it's a humble counter inside a subway station--but the food is arguably some of the best Surinese soul food in Amsterdam. Why it's worth the stop: * The Sandwiches: The Broodje Pom is the star here. It's flavorful, authentic, and served on a fresh roll. * Efficiency: They move through the line fast. It's the ultimate grab-and-go meal that actually feels homemade. * Authenticity: It's local, unpretentious, and consistently high quality. Things to know: It is located inside the station, so there's no "ambience" to speak of and seating is very limited. It's definitely more of a "stand and eat" or "take it to the park" kind of place. Overall: It might not be a fancy sit-down experience, but for the price and the flavor, it's easily one of the best quick bites in the city.

It was recommended we try out Surinamese cuisine while in Amsterdam so we found De Hapjeshoek. It's…read morelocated inside the Waterlooplein station / not visible at street level. We came during the dinner rush and it was packed inside. Since it was my first time, I wasn't sure what to order so I asked for recommendations. We tried the noodles with beef, and rice with chicken. It's relatively affordable given the large portions. Tasty and reminded me of a mix of Chinese and Indian food. I found an eyelash in my noodles though :(
