The ricotta gnocchi was exceptional - light and airy not heavy at all. The lobster dumplings another hit. The cherry and tomato burrata salad surprised everyone - yum. You cannot go wrong with the bone marrow! The only reason this was not five stars is that the main dishes lacked the butcher option. We wanted a steak, a great cut. Yeah, this place is worth the hype. Perfect spot for a special occasion dinner (or a regular dinner, if you have the funds for that!) Marrow features a rotating 4 course menu in addition to some a La carte staples you can order. Highly recommend going with the fixed meal and ordering some of the titular marrow as an appetizer. The marrow, meat, and salad were just a few of the stand out items we sampled during our visit. Indoor seating + an outdoor patio seating area if you don't mind a little bit of sun. I have had the good fortune to eat at some of the top restaurants in the country and maybe some other places. I was in town for a last minute football game. That's another story. Morrow was just an awesome random choice. I found Morrow on Yelp looking to explore a new restaurant. Unfortunately it was not at the top of the list, but being a person that doesn't trust algorithms, I typically dig a little deeper on the "recommended" list. You enter first into the bar/butcher shop. Yes, there's a butcher shop in the bar. The kitchen is viewable from the dining area. I like that. It tells me they have nothing to hide. I wish I could have come there with a group of people or at least my wife, It would have been great to sample everything on their menu. There is a Chef's tasting menu along with wine paring. The menu is adventurous but also has some "safe" choices. This may be a poor choice of words, but for anyone that's been on a date or has a partner that's picky, they can certainly accommodate, as I overheard at the table next to me. Upon Cassie's (my server, not a fair term. More like a guide) recommendation, I ordered the Beaverland Liver Mousse to start with. The mousse is complimented by a perfect berry compote with some perfectly toasted points for either dipping or adding a schmeer. ( sorry, I don't spell or grammar check.) I started my night looking for steak. The menu had so many things I wanted to try, but I stayed focus. I went with the "Michigan Beef" entree. I was given a choice of filet or hanger steak. I chose the hanger steak. Good choice by me. The steak was tender and tasty. I grew up in a blue collar household, a little fat and gristle is common in beef, get over it. It was delicious!! Seasoned well and cooked to perfection. Maybe it was the roasted German potato salad with a house made mustard and toasted grapes that made it taste so good......hard to tell since they were both on point. Dessert.....ah, dessert. I love when a chef really pushes the boundaries. How about a Bone Marrow custard? Don't be scared. I was skeptical. The way the buttery fat of the marrow was incorporated into the custard was amazing. The topping of mouse was creamy but not too sweet. There was a slight beefy flavor, but was welcomed by the sweetness of the chocolate Grenache. (it may not be Grenache, but I'm not a chef) To sum it up, the meal was perfection. If there was one drawback it would be the wine list. The choices were palatable but limited. You can always ask about a corkage. (They do seasonal menu rotations) Try this place, they deserve the attention. My only hope is, as they grow I hope the don't get "big". If I lived in Detroit I would be there weekly as there menu is an evolution through the seasons. Hats off to the staff and kitchen. They knocked it out of the park. Marrow has been on my list of local restaurants to try for years, mainly because they serve one of my childhood favorites roasted marrow. Unfortunately, Covid hit and the list sat on the shelf for-ever. I'm a foodie nerd, so I also watch Top Chef. Every season I lament the lack of Detroit representation until season 19 when they welcomed Chef Sarah Welch to the lineup. If you're a fan of the show, you know how that played out, and you know why I am about to rave about this gem on Kercheval. The restaurant itself has a touch of a Nordic vibe that is clean and elegant. The bar area is lovely and seems like a great place for a cocktail, if I could pause that long before getting to the food. I can't. I'm willing to stretch my culinary limits here based on watching what Chef Welch prepared on Top Chef, including beef tartare and salmon. I'm still not a fan, but I tried some! We got the tasting menu, if only to stop me from ordering every appetizer on the menu. The cheese plate starter was good, solid cheese selection with meats from their own butcher shop. Accoutrements were great. We naturally ordered the marrow appetizer which is worth every penny. The pâté à choux is the perfect vehicle for the marrow which has been elevated from my childhood memories to a level I can't articulate. And that's just the beginning. Second course was either a salad or shrimp crudo, my first time trying it and it was so good, would definitely try this again. Every bite was a new combination of flavors with just the right amount of heat. Third course choices were meatball or salad. The salad was great, but the meatball? Skip the salad, have the meatball. The texture is lighter than our Swedish friends at IKEA or any other restaurant, not that those are bad mind you; these are just that different. Fourth course is a choice of four meats, and we chose the beef and fish. Both were ridiculously good. Again, every bite is a different combination of flavors that all work together in a way that is surprising and delicious. Fifth course is a choice of two desserts, donuts or the brownie. My husband doesn't care for chocolate so he had the donuts. They were delicious but I think I got the better choice in the brownie. This was another trip back in time for me when my mom would make Black Forest cake in a sheet pan with a can of cherry pie filling. Again, a simple home cook treat is made out of this world by a talented pastry chef who adds sour cream ice cream and sour cherries to a luscious chocolate brownie. Heavenly. You'll also notice the attention to detail from the staff, who explain the nuances of each dish and are constantly making the rounds clearing plates and refilling drinks. If you're looking for something to take home from the butcher shop, we highly recommend the bacon, easily the best bacon we've ever had in our lives. We are always contriving ways to get here for more. We've had several steaks and lamb from here and we are ruined for the local butcher. We will be back as soon as possible. read more

My partner and I tried Marrow's holiday "classic steakhouse" themed tasting menu. This included 3 appetizers, and each guests selection of second course and entree for $100 each The three appetizers were a bone marrow, shrimp cocktail and oyster mignonette. The bone marrow was fine, the onion jam that topped it did make it a tad sweet for my taste. The two seafood appetizers were entirely forgettable with the cocktail sauce being fairly close to just ketchup. For second course my partner got the gnocchi with ricotta and bolognese, which was the highlight of the meal. I selected the lobster bisque which was a tad oily, but overall just okay. For mains we each selected the Michigan beef, my partner with the bearnaise, and mine with au poivre. The beef was about four uneven slices of over salted New York strip, with my sauce arriving at the table broken. This selection was intended to come with sides, but ours were seemingly omitted. Overall, we both were anxious to leave the restaurant by the end of the meal, and felt it was a fairly poor experience given the price. read more

I went into try out their scallops and their kimchi Caesar. There was a bit of a wait and the bar area was full. I was hoping for at least a spot at the bar. As a little tight on time, since I have to get my parents soon. I decided to just get a rotisserie chicken from them. I will have to come back another time, when they're not as busy try out their kimchi Caesar and their scallops. We shall see how the chicken is. Their whole rotisserie chicken is $14. It looks good and had good coloring to it and a bit of spices and herbs to it. I took it to go, since I was going to see my parents. Why not bring them a little bit of protein and sustenance during my visit. I tasted a little piece of every part of the chicken. I took some of the dark meat off the drum, the white meat off the breast and some from the thigh. It all tasted tender and decent. It had a slight seasoning from the rotisserie rub. Was nicely browned as well. The quality of the meat wasn't bad. The cost is a little higher than I normally would pay at a grocery store. The size of the chicken is just slightly bigger than what I would get at the grocery store as well. read more

Served with a sparkling Chardonnay. Marinated Squid Salad - Neuhaus dressing, castelvetrano olives, watercress, green apple. Served with an amber wine. Tuna Kataifi - crispy crust, beef fat bearnaise, tomato chutney. Crab Crespelle - stuffed crepe, shellfish bechamel, lemon zest, winter greens, thyme. Served with Pinot noir. This was my second time at Marrow, and it did not disappoint! The first time we did the tasting menu, but this time we shared stuff from the normal menu a la carte. There was a variety of food that everyone could enjoy. We also sat outside which made the experience even more enjoyable as their patio is so quaint and cute. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful when it came to decision making, even bringing us a champagne toast for a birthday! The only con i will say is that some of the food was not hot in temperature, but everything was seasoned very well so it made up for that. read more

My wife and I just had dinner at Marrow a couple of days ago for my birthday, and it definitely hit the spot as it had been a while since I had steak. The ambiance is pretty cool -- you walk into a butcher shop with a bar (meat + booze is a great combo!), and then you walk into their dining room off to the left. It's dark but not too dark, and there's background music that doesn't overwhelm -- so it's a great place for a date. My wife and I split several cocktails and they were all very good -- I wish I remembered the names but you probably can't go wrong with any of their specialty drinks. For food, my wife and I split the charred cauliflower, which was tasty but probably a bit small & overpriced -- though it was good, it led to us talking about other restaurants that do better cauliflower starters. Ironically, the roasted marrow was probably my least favorite thing here -- they put so much stuff on top that you can barely even taste the marrow itself. My entree, however, was delicious -- the local Michigan beef of the day was a tenderloin that was perfectly seasoned & cooked. The service, while friendly & helpful, was slow. It took a good 10 minutes for anyone to take our drink order, and then another long wait to take our food order after we asked a few questions. The dishes were slow to come, too. I would've expected the marrow and cauliflower to come out at the same times, but they came out about 10 minutes apart from each other, and then we waited a long time for our entrees to come. The place was only about half-full, which is why the 2+ hours we spent there felt a bit excessive. I'd definitely come back because the steak was delicious, but there are some areas for improvement. read more

I haven't had a formal sit down meal here yet but what I HAVE had has been a 5 star experience. My aunt and I popped in on a Sunday afternoon to get some stuff from the market and we also got some grab and go sandwiches and ate at the bar. Everything was top notch! To go I got a package of dry aged burgers (which we threw on the grill last night and OMG SO GOOD) a frozen meatloaf (probably my least favorite thing I purchased. It just didn't click with me so I probably wouldn't get it again), a container of smoked chicken salad (YUMMM), a container of smoked whitefish spread (double YUMMM), and a link of kielbasa. As a Polish gal whose family used to make our own kielbasa I can get kind snobby about it and while this link was different than the kind we would make (or the kind I now purchase from Hamtramck) it was incredible. A little smokier, a little more garlic. But just really really great. I got the ham sandwich to eat in and it was also delicious. I can't wait to come back for a sit down experience. And you know I'll be back for all those market purchases again, too! read more

We were disappointed with our experience here. We came here for my birthday, and while the service was excellent and the little birthday extras were a nice touch, the food was just ok. And for a $200 total bill... I expect a LOT more than just ok. We didn't dislike anything we had here, but we wouldn't want to really order any of it again, and on top of that we weren't even quite full when we left (which is kind of insane given that the meal was five courses...). This experience was just not worth the price point at all- I wouldn't pay more than $30 for the meal I had. Needless to say, there are enough other really nice restaurants in Detroit that are worth their price point that we do not plan to return. read more

Our first time at marrow was on New Year's Eve for their special dim sum menu. I really appreciated how thoughtfully the chefs curated the menu, and the service at the bar where we sat was really excellent, warm and attentive and not stuffy or pushy. The bartender also made a beautiful and yummy cocktail for me; the Rosemary's Baby (would recommend!). The best courses in my opinion were the foie gras egg rolls (melt in your mouth, wow!) and the fatty salmon crudo (flavor explosion!!). Honorable mention to the desserts: the sesame ball was a perfect salty sweet balance, and while the egg tart was too chewy in my opinion, the espresso ice cream was delightful and I wish I could take a tub home. The meat entree course was my least favorite. I didn't care for the short rib (sliced too thin and greasy on the lips), steamed meatball (soft texture was unpleasant), or beef cheek dumpling (bland and forgettable). Also, my husband ordered the $40 wine pairing, and the wines simply weren't unique or impressive. He was jealous of my much more interesting cocktail. We very much enjoyed our dinner - the restaurant has a nice, warm glow, service was excellent, and the food was very good. They are doing a pre-fixe dinner right now for $65 pp, which I think is fair. But the bill can get pretty high from there, just be aware. We opted to add the roasted marrow, which they're famous for, and I went for the $10 upgrade steak entree. We sat inside, but they have a lovely patio that I think would be great on cooler evenings; it looked quite lively. We both had a couple of the CBD sodas that they are offering - they're delicious and refreshing, and relax you the littlest bit. A lovely non-alcoholic option. As for the menu, you start with a shared charcuterie - delicious. We then had the roasted marrow which comes with these little profiteroles that are a little sweet. This time, it was topped with caramelized onion and this pepper jelly - the perfect combo of fatty, sweet and savory and very rich. We actually continued to eat it throughout the meal - 2 roasted bones come with the order. Next was the zucchini fritter, which I highly recommend, even though it's up against the tartare. It was very memorable and had these tiny little cucumbers - delicious. Next was the best tomato salad I've ever had with a fried goat cheese croquette - savory and yummy. My main course was the Michigan beef which surprised me in how good the flavors tasted together - broccoli, juicy cherries and crispy puffed rice - every bite was delicious. My husband, though, had the best dish of the night - the brown butter scallops. These were the best scallops I've ever had - they were so sweet and perfectly cooked with a fresh green sauce and pea tendrils. Amazing. Dessert was a chocolate whoopie pie, and we each ate every bite. Perfectly chocolatey and sweet. I think it would be quite expensive to make this a regular dinner spot, but it's definitely a great place to take a date. First trip here and the plating was beautiful and service was exceptional. However, it was just okay. When making dishes with ethnic roots, it's important to embrace the fullness of the flavour profile. The steak was chewy and lacked depth, the tartare was small, I much prefer a full tartare v a sprinkle on a small tortilla, the onion bhajji was bland, the onion overpowered the marrow and the charcuterie board was just okay. Haven't been here in some years. Chef Welch was a Top Chef finalist last year and the food was intensely flavorful. Over the top food. Only issue is dining experience. Seems like a mill that lost sight of the fact the dining experience is at least 50% of the pleasure of dining out. They do a tasting menu, which seems many diners get. However, there is no wine pairing. Initially, I couldn't grasp why, but eventually figured out why. There is no time to enjoy a tasting menu with a wine pairing. You get only 90 minutes to enjoy 5 delicious courses, which is not nearly enough time. Courses came in very rapid succession. We were nearly finished with a course when the next course arrived. Felt extremely rushed. Too rushed to properly enjoy this fantastic food. In addition to the extremely rushed service, they upsell additional courses, as the tasting menu portions will satiate only the daintiest of eaters. We opted to get the pork terrine as a starter. Even with that, we all joked about stopping by Burger King on the way home. We get tasting menus frequently. Rarely do we leave unsatiated. Don't get me wrong, it was almost enough food, but not quite. And when I took my last sip of coffee, I looked at my watch and it was exactly 90 minutes from being seated. And yes, we felt rushed out the door. Don't get me wrong, everything we ate was fantastic. But we did not have time to enjoy it. I understand they have very few covers and need to turn the tables, but $500 for 3 people should be more enjoyable. read more

A group of us made a reservation and went to Marrow for brunch and it was delicious. We started with the donuts and cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll was delicious, and I highly recommend it. For lunch we all ordered different things. The rest of the table had the coconut grains, steak & sunny duck egg, shrimp & "grits", and the lamb scramble. Everyone enjoyed their dish. New & Yummy! My friend recommended this place, and she did not disappoint (and neither did Marrow). Starter - chorizo dumplings. Chorizo, scrambled eggs, and a bit of cheese - served with sour cream, hot sauce, and corn for dipping/addition. Seasonal donut - made in house, crispy outside with a fall apart soft inside. The tiny candied oranges on top really brought this to a 4 star rating. It was a cinnamon sugar donut over a layer of caramel spread. My friend adored her lamb scrambled egg bowl, with the home made English muffin. Cappuccinos are strong & the fresh squeezed juice is a bit pricey, but tastes fresh and delish. We've been wanting to try this restaurant ever since we watched the Chef on Top Chef last year. It did not disappoint. We opted for the tasting menu which was the best meal we've ever had. At first I thought it wouldn't be enough food but we left perfectly full. You have to try the tasting menu at least once. We will definitely be back to try the regular a La carte dishes. The service was excellent and took the time to ask about dietary restrictions or allergies and go over the menu. It was really an amazing experience. 3.5 stars. I went here for my birthday and had a solid meal. I had the tasting menu and I have to agree with others, that compared to other places that amount was a bargain. However, I had issue with the pacing of the meal, as some dishes just took too long to come out. We actually order additional food just because we were getting too hungry between dishes. My wife and I still ended up eat more at home. The highlights for me were the rice dumplings and the cauliflower, nothing else really stood out for my tastes. Service was spot on and while we were there the owner popped in and was busy scanning the room and greeting guest, which was nice. Overall a nice dining experience. Food was phenomenal, marked down for business processes and the overall experience was disjointed and awkward. We made reservations weeks in advance and had to lock in our menu choices, but the restaurant changes their menu each week so that does not appear to be an effective approach. We had to keep asking to change dishes and it was an off-putting experience because it felt like we were an inconvenience the whole time. The courses came out so quickly one after the other it felt rushed which brought down the experience. Then we were told the drinks would be charged to the credit card used for the reservation, and it's been 3 days and we didn't get a receipt or anything, we also never agreed to have them retain our credit card information for that purpose. The food was all amazing, and I'm sure in non-COVID times it won't be as difficult to order. The restaurant had great spacing and COVID precautions but their current business practices are not customer friendly. read more

When we came we pretty much tried everything and it is the best taste I have tried so far. This was one of 2 must-visit places that our daughter had identified for our first trip to see her in Detroit (just FYI, the other was Selden Standard). She chose well. There were three of us, and we shared 5 menu items among us, making for a very satisfying dinner. We had the bao, the yakitori (which happened to be an amazing lamb based deconstructed gyro on this night), the tongue (at Marrow, dinner tastes you!), shrimp and gnocchi, and a cauliflower dish whose details escape me. For me, the bao and the yakitori were the stars of the evening. Service was just right - attentive without hovering, making for a very pleasant dining experience. Came here for dinner and some cocktails and to check out the meat market as well. For cocktails we ordered: Amber Crystalline, The Longshore, Sirens Song- We enjoyed the cocktails we got. I think the least favorite was the Longshore. Olema Cabernet- This wine was ok. Not anything overly exciting but not bad either. For extra menu items we ordered: The Lobster Dumplings- Amazing. Overall our top dish of the night. Perfect lobster dumplings, full of flavor and freshness. Bonus Lamb- An extra dish that was on the menu that day. Chef Sarah had just finished competing on Top Chef and I believe this was one of the dishes from that. It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be but still tasty. For the Tasting Menu we chose: First course: Charcuterie Board - One of our favorite charcuterie boards to date. Loved the sheer amount of texture and flavor, as well as the fact that everything went perfectly together no matter what combination you chose. Second Course: Ceviche- I believe the ceviche was unavailable and we ended up getting a trout tartare. We also got the Dry Aged Tartare. I enjoyed both but I think I preferred the dry aged. The only thing was that towards the end it tasted a little salty. Third Course: House Meatball - I was surprised to see such a composed and pretty dish compared to the simple name. I enjoyed everything as a whole. The Meatball itself was good but not the best I've had. Fourth Course: We wanted the swordfish but it was unavailable. I'm not sure what fish we ended up getting but we liked it. We also ordered the pork or the lamb - can't remember. I really enjoyed the peas and sauce on that dish. Amazed at how fresh all the produce was. Final course - Dessert: Ricotta doughnut- This was served with I believe freeze dried strawberries on top. A nice soft and tender doughnut with a crispy outside. It tasted good with the ice cream we got as well. Overall I'm really happy we were able to come here for dinner. Bottom line, nothing noteworthy and they missed the mark on a couple basic elements. It's a cute place and nice addition to the neighborhood block (which is at the Far East end of Detroit). The seating is comfortable enough, but be advised that this place is quite small. This adds to a nice vibrant community feel. However, I think some of the patrons were looking for an intimate night out. This isn't the place for that. I'll preface my formal review by saying that this restaurant has been on my list for quite some time now. It came highly recommended by some friends and after reading the reviews we had high hopes. We were promptly seated and the waitress came right by. Explained the menu and the normal "local sourced" mantra. You have the option of either the entire table doing the prix fixe menu or all ordering a la carte. They very very strongly recommended the prix fixe, so that's what we did. We were even swayed into adding on some bone marrow. Here's what we ordered: Course 1 - Charcuterie board (Brie, havarti, 2 meats, etc.) It was just okay. Nothing notable Course 2 - Steak tartare (again, good, but nothing special) & Maitake crawfish dumpling (this was good. Could have been great if the sauce wasn't so sweet) Course 3 - Radish Salad and Meatball (pork and elk) both were just okay/good. The meatball lacked flavor and again was dressed in a super sweet barbecue glaze. Course 4 - Peppered monkfish (way too peppery, and accompanied by another really sweet sauce)& Michigan Beef (this was actually great and worth the upcharge. Comes with a pomme purée and crispy potato layers that are awesome) Course 5 - Donut & Chestnut custard (both had a an off putting and butter bite to the sauce/toppings) Typically it is presumed that when's restaurant offers primarily a prix fixe menu, that timing is on point to a degree. Here's the timing of when everything arrived: Course 1, instantly. Added bone marrow, directly after course 1. Course 2, came out 2 minutes after bone marrow. This caused us to eat one of the dishes in front of us cold. (Finally, a drink came) Then course 3 took about 15 minutes after we finished the marrow and course 2. Roughly 30 minutes total. Then we waited so long for course 4 that our waitress brought us an additional app for free. It was a nice gesture, but at this point we just wanted our mains so that we could get out. Finally course 4 showed up, 1 plate at a time, 3 minutes apart each. So a prix fixe 5 course dinner took 1.75 hours. Mind you, we are not slow eaters by any means. It was clear that something was off when both tables that were on either side were finished before we received our main dishes, and they sat down a good 15-20 minutes after us. Perhaps the timing was just bad luck on our part or the server was dealing with an unruly table. But the timing coupled with the lack luster food just means that we've crossed this one off our list. If really sweet food with really sweet sauces are your thing or if you just want some instagram porn, give it a try. For us, $300 for 2 people and 4 drinks just isn't worth it for this type of experience. read more

Came for lunch. Amazing bloody, the best burger possibly in all of Detroit, and an awesome Italian sandwich. Highly recommend! Sat at the bar, not a lot of seating but nice once you do get seated. Service was great too! read more

Deeelicious, some of the best food around! But let me start off by saying that Marrow had the best Covid-safe rules that I've seen yet. You order and pay when reserving online, the masked server told us she would only be by sparingly (so pretty much picked up and set down plates, no much talking), and there was a paper to write down any additions you wanted to order night of. Well done! I also felt special with two classes of sparkling cava AND candles on our dessert for our anniversary :) I can't even explain the food, mmm! The Lebanon salami and kielbasa, both not normally my cup of tea, were amazing. They were super flavorful but subtle at the same time because of how balanced everything was. Surprisingly, although the steak and scallops tasted great (cooked with a wonderful hard sear but moist in the middle), the dessert was the best bite for both of us. If you are ever there for the chocolate pudding with honeycomb, order it! Sounds so simple, but was really decadent and the textures complemented each other so well. I loved Marrow. Every course was beautiful and delicious and wonderful. I think my favorite thing was actually salad - it had coconut cilantro ranch and bacon jam and it was perfect. It was like the most beautifully distilled essence of bacon laying below the tender field greens and oh my goodness... Everything was amazing though. I liked that we just ordered ahead and everything was pre-paid too, that made it easy - you can still add things by checking off what you want on a slip of paper and it just automatically charges to the same card. read more

Update: The response I received from Marrow was amazing. They explained the upcharge cost was in fact a mistake and that it truly should have been just a slight up charge. They suggested many ways to try and make it right on their part. If this doesn't speak to the character of this restaurant I don't what does. Thank you for doing what you can to make things right! I can't wait to come back and try Marrow again! This place was delicious! I had never heard of it, but my boyfriend surprised me with reservations. I highly encourage making a reservation before coming. We sat in the dining room and got the family style tasting menu. This was amazing. There were a few things that the chef made us that weren't even on the menu! Two of my favorites were the dumplings and the meatballs. The portions looked small, but man did they add up! I walked out feeling satisfied and full. My only negative about this (and honestly it reflects on the waiter) is that we upgraded to beef instead of pork. Our waiter said it was a slight up-charge, but when we received the bill it was a $50 up charge. To me that is not slight and the waiter should have absolutely said that's how much it was!!! (Update: Marrow reached out and made this right as it was an error). Although this is a butcher shop, there meat selection did seem to be limited. I was expecting a few more meat selections on the menu, but even without that the menu sounded amazing!! The owner was there and walking around a lot. She was very nice and did great job interacting with tables throughout the night. Our waiter was ok. He wasn't as attentive as most other wait staff I saw at their tables. He came up a few times to check on us, but most other wait staff seemed to check on their tables a lot. read more
