I had tests done in December 2025, and as of today have not been able to reach his office since January. My first visit with Dr. Martin J. Backman was surprisingly negative. I went their for disability review. When the nurse escorted me into the examination room, I sat in a chair with a backrest because I was experiencing significant back pain. The moment Dr. Backman entered the room, rather than introducing himself or greeting me, he immediately appeared irritated and said, "Get over here," while gesturing toward the examination table. There was no "Hello," "Nice to meet you," or even a courteous request to move. The interaction felt less like a professional physician-patient encounter and more like a demand for compliance. The tone was not humorous or lighthearted; it came across as controlling, impatient, and dismissive. What made the experience particularly frustrating is that I later learned I had a sprained back. Given that I was already in pain, sitting in a supportive chair was a reasonable choice. A physician should be able to recognize that a patient may have physical limitations and communicate accordingly. Medical competence is important, but bedside manner matters as well. Patients are often anxious, uncomfortable, and vulnerable. Basic professionalism, courtesy, and respect should be the minimum standard. Unfortunately, my experience fell far short of that expectation. Additionally, I experienced the same frustration described by many other reviewers regarding communication. The office voicemail states that calls will be returned within 24 hours, which naturally creates an expectation that patient concerns will be addressed promptly. Unfortunately, my own attempts to contact the office seemed to disappear into a void, with no meaningful follow-up. What I find most concerning is not necessarily that delays occur. Any reasonable person understands that medical practices can experience staffing shortages, physician retirements, increased patient loads, and other operational challenges. The issue is that these explanations appear repeatedly throughout the office's responses to criticism, while the underlying patient experience remains unchanged. The office frequently explains why service problems occur, but explanations do not change the patient's experience. While staffing shortages, physician retirements, and high call volumes may be legitimate challenges, patients ultimately evaluate a medical practice based on accessibility, communication, professionalism, and the quality of their interactions. Repeatedly explaining deficiencies is not the same as resolving them. What emerges from reading both the positive and negative reviews is a noticeable disconnect. The office appears focused on operational realities and internal constraints, while dissatisfied patients are describing the practical consequences of those constraints. Both perspectives may be true simultaneously. However, from a patient's standpoint, what matters is whether calls are returned, appointments are managed effectively, concerns are addressed, and interactions are professional and respectful. My criticism is not that the office faces challenges. My criticism is that those challenges seem to have become normalized to the point that patient dissatisfaction is often explained rather than meaningfully addressed. Based on these encounters, I would not return and would instead seek care from a physician who demonstrates greater professionalism, patience, and interpersonal awareness. 4 stars for Dr. Backman who was very professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to answer my questions. 5 stars for Danny in the front who is amazing! He is professional, patient, friendly, and genuinely nice. The other two female front office staff on the other hand, need a little more guidance on professionalism, hence the lowered rating. 0 stars for the office response to calls and/emails. Here's my experience making an appointment: - took me calling every 10-20mins for 5 hours before I was able to speak to someone to schedule an appointment. I wish I was exaggerating, see receipts attached - was told my referral "was not in the system" even though I confirmed it went through from BOTH the insurance and from my PCP office. Even when I gave her the correct referral #, she "didn't see it in the system". Was forced to call back and forth with this office for 7 hours trying to get them to acknowledge my referral in order to merely schedule the appointment. I kid you not. - was not allowed to schedule an appointment while they were looking for my referral even though they are booked out until April (I asked to be put on the next avail appt since they are already booked out so far but was denied until they could verify the referral... so this means they want me to wait 6 months after waiting 2 months to get verified and another 4 months to have an appointment to be seen?!?) - unfortunately only got the female staff member every time I called the office and she was very short tempered and curt - I was able to get my PCP to fax the referral to them (unlike this office, my PCP took care of it within 30mins). Lo and behold, my referral is valid. But when I offered to email them my copy of the referral, she refused even though they have a working email for patients to submit paperwork - the lady picking up the call sighed every 5 mins, gave me attitude, and refused to do anything until my "referral was verified" Ok, I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and pretend she was having a bad day and give them a pass, but my experience at the office on the day of the appointment was unfortunately worse. Day of the appointment: - walked in and immediately without even greeting me, was sharply barked at by one of the 2 female staff that day to sign in and sit down. no greeting, no formality or any other polite conversation, just attitude - when I was checking out, I asked about paperwork Dr. Backman agreed to fill out. Was told it will be $25, cash only. My husband was in the car, I asked if I could go get the cash and come right up. Was told ok. But when I approached the window 5 mins later after grabbing the $$, was told with attitude "Ma'am, sit down, we will call you in order". Ummm, you told me to come back to the window and already took my name off the list, so which directions do you want me to follow? - then, she turned around and rudely told her co-worker "these people can't follow directions to sit down" while I was STILL STANDING IN Front of her - I explained the situation to her coworker when called, and she took my money for the paperwork with no apologies for the experience - the entire check in and check out experience was handled unprofessionally, and as a RN myself who understands the trying times of being a healthcare professional post-COVID, there was just no excuses I could come up with to justify the staff's behavior. - told the doctor I needed a estimation of work clearance, to which his response was: I need your test results first. Then, On the day of the test, I show up to the office, and they hand me the work clearance letter before the test was even finished. I was referred to Dr. Backman first but because I had so many scary bad experiences with different drs and because he is a bit far I didn't see him and chose Dr. Bonyadi instead, because I was scared I couldn't drive that far with my legs being so weak. Today they weren't hurting as bad so I made it there ok. If I went yesterday I definitely wouldn't have been able to drive that far! Thankfully today the pain wasn't too bad. I found handicap parking the whole lot was full! Big building. When I got to the door the office was closed I was worried they forgot about me to be honest. But at 12:30 they unlocked the doors and i got inside. It's small yet cute inside, the front desk guy is really friendly, I spoke to a girl when I first tried to make my appointment and she was a bit rude so I got a little worried. The guy up front I wish I remembered his name but he is really helpful and kind. There were other families in there after I arrived, one lady and bf were so sweet I talked to them a bit the lady had a stroke too and one sided weakness like me. I told her I think I had the same but my last doctor didn't give me any answers so I had to find a new doctor. She had a similar story. I wished her luck and told her i would pray for her too. When Dr. Backman came into the room, he is was caring and has a soft voice and didn't rush me. I brought all the tests I had done at my other neurologist that was rude and from my hospital stay and er visits and my neurosurgeon. He is sending me for more MRI's and CT scans for my brain, neck and spine. You know when u forget everything you wanna say? I did, even when he asked me questions but I figured next appointment I will be more prepared since I will get more scans done and we can actually talk about them and he can finally tell me what is going on with me neurologically. I think i have had strokes or something with these episodes I have had. I guess it is hard to sometimes see that on brain scans or it could get missed if you have had a stroke in the past. I went through so much that caused these episodes to happen to me and my body to breakdown the way it has. But I have good feelings about this doctor like he can help me and give me answers finally!! It's scary enough knowing something is wrong with me neurologically and not being able to walk or drive on days that can be really hard on me. But to have an uncaring doctor like before is really disheartening and not give me any type of answers as to what is wrong with me neurologically and not inform my other doctors so they can help me too. So I am really hoping he can help me. I really appreciate you caring and seeing me Dr. Backman, I truly hope you can help me and on our next meeting you can give me some sort of answers. I had such a terrible experience trying to schedule an appointment. I spoke to someone once and she was pretty rude. I called back an additional 5 times to schedule an appointment, but each time no one picked up, so I left messages. In my final message I said, "Please just let me know if you're not taking new patients, so I'll stop calling." No response. CalOptima asked if I wanted to file a complaint, which I did. I just got the complaint results back and the doctor's office claimed that I only called once and they called me back a couple of days later. Why would I waste my time filing a complaint if they'd called me back??? They either lied to CalOptima, or there's something wrong with their phone system. I'm so glad I checked the reviews here, because now I see it's a systemic issue at this office. Something VERY WRONG here and they know about it, but aren't fixing it. Omg this clinic has a 2.9 review rate. Now I understand why. After reading few of other's reviews I came to a conclusion that this Doctor is also incompetent just like his staff. He lies by saying all calls are returned within 24 hours. This makes him a liar and fraud just like others called him. I recently had an unfortunate experience with Doctor Martin Backman's office that I feel compelled to share. After being referred by my primary doctor to see a neurologist, I attempted to schedule an appointment at Doctor Backman's office. However, I encountered significant difficulties in reaching their staff. Over the course of a month and a half, I made numerous phone calls and left several voicemails, but my attempts to connect with the office went unanswered. Each time I called, the voicemail system assured me that someone would return my call within 24 to 48 hours, but this never happened. In frustration, I left a voicemail notifying them that if I didn't receive a response, I would have to contact my insurance and file a complaint. It was only after exactly a month and a half that someone finally answered my call on October 2nd, 2023, at 9:30 am. However, to my surprise, I was informed that I had been discharged from the office for allegedly being rude to the staff. I explained that I had never spoken to any staff member and before I could clarify further, the employee abruptly ended the call. I was deeply disappointed by the lack of professionalism, the poor customer service, and the overall rudeness I experienced during my interactions with Doctor Backman's office. It is disheartening to see such disregard for patients and their needs. I strongly caution anyone considering this doctor to reconsider. I've had my referral with Dr. Backman for about 2 months now. I have yet to step foot in the clinic. Medical clinics aren't typically the easiest to get in touch with, but this office is a nightmare. I wish I read the reviews, if you are planning to get referred to here, REQUEST TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. You have a 10% chance of being able to get into contact with their office. And when you can't, don't bother leaving a voicemail, you will never get a callback. I have decided to file a complaint with my insurance due to the negligence of this office. My wife was referred to Dr Backman from her Orthopedic Surgeon for a consult. Upon arriving, we were greeted at the front desk by professional, pleasant and knowledgeable staff member with a smile. She guided us through their check in and paperwork process with a positive attitude and most of all, made us feel welcome. Excellent customer service! Wait time was minimal and we were introduced to Dr Backman. All we can say is Dr. Backman immediately began an assessment and listened very attentively to us as to what brought us to him. His calm, professional and charismatic personality was a delight to encounter as my wife was very nervous as to what his diagnosis would ultimately lead to. His assessment was comprehensive and lead to a second appointment today for a specialized test. Dr. Backman was attentive to my wife ensuring she wasn't uncomfortable during the process. Warning: This is going to be long. This review is mainly about the rude female office staff I talked to rather than Dr. Backman. He has overseen my care since 2017 and I've never had any issues. In my experience, he is caring, light-hearted, and he listens and is on top of responding to insurance to make sure that the specific brand of medication I'm on is covered as a special circumstance when they wanted to deny coverage. During COVID, the switch to Telehealth was fine, but trying to get ahold of the office to schedule the next appointment was a nightmare if he didn't have them call back to set it. Now, this has become the norm. Leaving voicemails when the automated system answers your call is pointless. I recently tried calling for medication refill a month in advance, but if you choose that option, it says your call can't be connected, so I'd have to call back and select option 4. Every week, it would send me to the voicemail system when I chose option 4 as an existing patient looking to set up my next appointment. I would leave my message and never receive a call back, so I'd leave another message the following week with calls in between those times with no luck of getting to a live person. My pharmacy even tried reaching out 4 times to get me approved for refills and they never got a response. I tried again during the 4th week and got lucky when I chose option 4 again and it went through to someone at the office. They approved my refills, and I was able to be seen the following week. Dr. Backman told me he'd call me back after consulting with pharmacists to see what other options there are for maintaining my autoimmune condition. He called me back within the hour with his recommendation, but it was brief with no mention of what to expect in regard to how switching over to the new method of infusion would work. I received a call from the pharmacy that he had sent the prescription to, but they needed all my history and a bunch of other information. I already have an established relationship with my existing company that I've worked with since 2017. I thought that it would be sent to them or at the very least, that that information would be relayed to me so I could have advocated for myself and have him send the prescription to my existing pharmacy, which does have all supplies and medication for that infusion method as well. I called his office to ask if they could possibly switch pharmacies. After listening to all the options, the last one for 'all other inquiries' (I think option 8) sent me to a live person. I asked the female office staff if it was possible to switch pharmacies. She immediately started speaking to me with an annoyed tone and said that it would be 'a whole process' for them to switch. She rudely asked me what the reason was for switching. I wanted to explain that I already work with a pharmacy that has all my information and history along with an existing nurse that comes monthly for my infusions. I began to say, "The doctor never discussed with me which pharmacy..." when she rudely interjected herself and cut me off to say, "Right, because he's the doctor and he knows best." EXCUSE ME? He may know the prescription side of things, but that's where it ends. He sees me twice a year. Every month (since 2017), I work with the pharmacy and my nurse to ensure I have all the supplies necessary for the upcoming infusions and work out a schedule for it. Though I was fuming inside, I calmly told her that I understand he's the doctor, but the new pharmacy needs all my information when my existing one already knows it all, has the supplies and medication for the new method of infusion, and I have an existing infusion nurse that comes to my house that's scheduled already. All she could reply with was, "Okay, I'll let the pharmacy know." It was extremely unprofessional, uncalled for, and I hope she reads this to learn from this conversation. I urge everyone to always advocate for themselves. You know you best and what works for you! I hope that's not the advice she gives her loved ones because it's always good to have an open line of communication with anyone you work with as well as having questions and/or seeking other professionals' opinions. read more

This rating is for the receptionist Patty who was very rude and unprofessional! My father had an appointment of course it was windy and raining. My face mask flew off and got wet. As I come into the front to check him in and ask for a mask. She aggressively interrupted and starts to say " you can't come in without a mask"! Not to mention she was on a personal phone call. Super polite and very efficient! The office staff helped me schedule an appointment quickly. Once I arrived I was seated and treated quickly. I was really nervous because I never had the nerve testing done before but he calmly explained what was going to happen and what I would be feeling and experiencing as I went through the examination. And through the examination we talked about The Joker and the various different interpretations of him. It really helped me feel at ease and comforted. First off, I'd like to give a massive high five to the office staff, namely, Leslie. Whilst all of the office staff are both friendly and helpful, Leslie has always gone above and beyond her typical duties to assist me with the myriad of issues and questions that I always have without hesitation. She is professional, knowledgeable, friendly and above all, extremely empathetic and caring. The remainder of the office staff are within the same candor and are awesome as well. Reading the previous reviews and how scathing they are make absolutely ZERO sense and are more than likely due to patient error. Dr. Backman's office staff are great. I am beyond satisfied with their services and would recommend this staff to my friends and family. The phone system is a pain in the ass to deal with but the response time from both the office staff AND Dr. Backman after leaving a message, is expedient and beyond reproach. I do know that ANYTIME there's an issue involving outside vendors, the office staff is on top of it to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Finally, Dr. Backman himself is fantastic doctor! During my initial/first appointment, he sat down and took the time necessary to get to know and understand me, my medical/health/personal concerns and goals. He is one of the few doctors that did not judged me right off based on my appearance and was extremely candid about my situation. Dr. Backman solved my chronic migraines which disabled me for many years. He also treats me for a seizure disorder and I feel comfortable in his care. I have been his patient for about 8 years or so. I am surprised to see so many bad reviews from people who just don't seem to understand that wait times to see a neurologist with a lot of satisfied, long-time patients is longer because he is very busy. If the appointment needs to be made earlier, he will fit you in. He offers in-person and tele-health appointments. Whether I only see him for 5 minutes or if my appointment takes a half hour, he will make sure all my questions are answered. He also has a sense of humor. As far as front staff goes, they're great! I'm not the easiest patient to deal with as I also have memory issues. Recently I came in for an appointment and was worried about my medication not being covered by insurance. I let the doctor know that I needed help with getting the medication covered and he pulls out my chart and shows me he already got it approved and it was going to be ready that very day. Not even 10 minutes after I left the appointment, I received a phone call from a specialty pharmacy that delivered my (now covered) medication directly to my doorstep.
