It remains a must do walking tour. You do need a bit of stamina as it's a hilly city and the city walls are steep in places. There was a large crowd when we turned up for our second experience. The man taking the tour was the same one on our first a few years ago. This was a traumatised city and it was this way I guess 40 years. On our 2nd tour it again struck me how he tells the truth of the horror without any rancour or bitterness - he lived in it and through it. Next time we visit this most friendly of cities we'll certainly do this tour again. read more

On our first full day in Derry we made sure to get out and explore the town, so we decided to do the Walking Tour that our host recommended. *Pro tip, you do need cash and if you only have USD then the price is about $10/pp rather than $6£. There was probably 30+ people in the group we joined, so it was quite large. Our guide was John and he did a great job handling the tour with so many people. At times he talked so fast that we had a hard time understanding him, or if there was background noise it made it difficult to hear him but overall we both liked the tour for the cost.  It gave us the opportunity to learn about Derry's history, some of it being very recent; and we learned about the Derry Walls, why they call the city "the Walled City" and "the Maiden City". The tour last just over an hour and we probably walked half a mile or so in total. The weather was windy which made it cold, but it was partly sunny and dry. The best part of the tour was how close it was to the apartments, so it made really easy to find and to come/go. read more

We were in the north for a couple of days so we decided to drive over to Derry and take a city tour, as one of the few remaining walled cities in Europe, Derry has a wonderful ambiance, we showed up for the tour and Phillip was our guide, it's amazing how you can fit more then 800 years of history into about 90 minutes and not make it seemed rushed. Phillip was able to give us an overview of the city it's early and modern history, the troubles and recent events of the past 20 years since the peace accords. It always wonderful when you can get an unbiased perspective from someone who e perceived things firsthand and can give you some background and what both sides went though. Very informative and well worth the £6 price of admission. One work of caution if you are driving yourself the parking in the shopping enter that the tour leaves from can get crowded if you come late in the day. read more

In can easily say that this "free" walking tour of the Londonderry City Walls conducted by Jarvid from Martin Mc Crossan tours was one of the very best. Jarvid was full of energy and passion for his hometown. It was reflected in everything that he described, in every story that he narrated. This tour is rated one of the best things to do around here. It certainly is great and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time. At £4 per person it was money well spent and there is even free tea or coffee included at the end of the tour. We got to walk about a half mile on top of the wall and learned all about history from the 1600's until present time. I was very surprised to not see any other reviews on here about this place. This is one of the top rated tours in Ireland and I cannot fathom why. Our tour guide focused a lot on specific people from history without really telling the story/plot. She also spent a lot of time talking about celebrities who are from or connected with Londonderry. After a while, I seriously zoned out and went off on my own to take pictures. I only completed the tour so I would get back to the spot we started. Also, it was a very hot day and our tour included a coffee or tea at the end - exactly what we didn't need. Honestly, I'd recommend skipping this and exploring Londonderry on your own. read more

We rented a car and traveled 1,700 miles around Ireland for our honeymoon in October. While planning our trip I came across the city of Derry. I decided that we'd stop and stay the night there. When we arrived to our hotel we saw the advertisement for the Martin McCrossan City Tours. We decided to check it out. I emailed them to find out how to get tickets and they emailed back explaining where to go. We got up in the morning and did the 10am - 12pm tour. John, our tour guide, was amazing! He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of Derry. It was a really interesting tour and fun to walk around the walled in city. There's so much history! Incredible walking tour around Londonderry. Top rated tour in Ireland and at 4€ a person, we had a fantastic group quarterbacked by tour guide John. John was knowledgeable, very humorous and ensured the whole group could hear him while we walked most of the city backwards to keep focused on the group. During the tour you will receive a very balanced overview of the IRA Troubles and see the bombing and Blood Sunday sites. Most importantly, our guide offered a very positive and optimistic view of Londonderry that says "we're open for business". A must do. In one hour you get a snapshot of all the main sites, history and end with a completely tea or coffee in the cafe. read more
