Martine's Dream has been a go to boutique for many years. I was at an event at the BK Museum and saw a guy wearing this beautiful print. Later that night I ran into him with mutual friends and inquired. That was the beginning of my friendship with George (S.I.P) and with the store. Upon arrival I was met by this stunning black woman wearing a huge smile and draped in an ensemble of prints and textures. Everything she was wearing were from her store and I wanted all of them- but I couldn't afford it so I bought one piece; the classic Nikki dress in yellow. That summer I wore that dress at least 10 times and every time I did, I'd get a million compliments. Debbie had a sale and ran to get more pieces namely the Audra Kimono and another Nikki dress in print. A year later, Debbie had a stall at BAM Dance Africa and I grabbed a couple more pieces. Folks would pile into the shop everyday to stop and chat with Debbie, purchase signature kimonos, dresses, tunics of the brightest, boldest prints, catch a vibe when the DJ was there on weekends or simply just to hang out. It was that neighborhood spot. We had many friends in common and so it was always fun to spot each other #martinedreaming As the store closes and Debbie transitions to the next leg of her journey; I wish her nothing but the best and know that her and this shop will continue to evoke joy whenever I see someone wearing her pieces and is reminded of how much of gem this post was. read more

My friend and I popped in to check it out as she lives in the neighborhood and hadn't been in a while. I loved the vibe of the shop and that it is firmly rooted in the community. The clothing was amazing and I loved all the colors and prints. It also smelled incredible from one of the candles they were burning. I don't know what Debbie puts in her clothes (magic? Joy? Sunlight?) but the dresses I've gotten from her just get softer and breezier and more delicious after each wash and wear. My friend and I came from Jersey to experience the store and boy am I glad we did. Upon arrival I felt in my element as the sandalwood incense burned. The store is like the closet of your most chic and stylish island hippie; patterns and colors all around. At first I couldn't find anything that spoke to me. I tried on some harem pants that were a blue paisley but didn't make me feel good. I then tried the backless green dress and I felt huge it but when the stylist, Arly came over and adjusted the dress on me, I felt better and looked better but I still wasn't sold. Finally as I saw Arly show the diverse ways of wearing this particular shirtdress I asked to try it on. As soon as I did I felt so good in it. I purchased it and cant wait to wear it at an upcoming gala. Later on, Martine the owner came and she made sure to ask our names and if we liked what we bought. She then shared her story about how she got started and it was very inspirational. She has such a warm spirt and I look forward to my next purchase of awesome jewelry as I could only afford one of her pieces at a time...for now.:-) read more

I went to Martines Dream yesterday to see what all of the fuss was about. I wanted one of the beautiful scarf/wrap/blanket thingy's that I had seen her customers posing in that are featured on her instagram page. I was pleasantly surprised to not only find beautiful and unique hand-made wraps. But beautiful jewelry, kimono's and kaftans and a plethora of different throws you can fashion into bedding or anything in your home that you want to decorate. I highly recommend this store, Debby is warm and open and the space it self makes you want to stay for hours discovering all the beautiful possibilities. read more

Decided to drop by the Dream shop to see more of her items and after browsing around ended up purchasing a gorgeous multi colored shawl for my Aunt's birthday. This store is gorgeous and full of love. Bravo to Debbie and her patient and super friendly staff for making this such a warm and inviting place with such a gorgeous and affordable selection of well made and unique clothes, housewares, and accessories.. I am a working mom so I am constantly in a rush, but if there was ever a day (and I hope there is) where I could just take it easy and casually shop, Martine's Dream would be my first stop. Amazingly talented salesgirl convinced me to go with two dresses that, upon reflection (at home, in decent light) looked absolutely terrible on me. No refunds, only exchanges, so I trekked back to Crown Heights to choose another another dress and a couple of scarves. Washed the scarf once in cold water, and all the colors bled. The dress fabric is so sheer that one can't really wear it on the street, and once the starch is washed out of it, it looks like an old pillowcase. If I'd had any wits about me at all, Id have realized that this stuff is sourced cheaply from third-world countries and then marked up substantially. That's one kind of dream I'd rather not support. read more
