    Cha-shu Tamago Ramen
    Austin B.

tl;dr the signature creamy chicken broth is sure to satisfy, even if it doesn't quite contend for the title of best bowl of ramen Vancouver's food scene tends to lean on the affordable side, and Maruhachi Ra-men is no different. Maruhachi (originally known as Marutama) opened its first Vancouver location in the West End over a decade ago, dedicating itself to a single dish: tori-paitan (creamy chicken broth) ramen. The wild popularity has led to multiple new locations popping up across Metro Vancouver, although pundits have lamented that Maruhachi's quality has diminished with the expansion. Nonetheless, I was eager to try Maruhachi for myself. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The West End location makes its home just off the busy Robson St. Thin wooden slats across the storefront foreshadow the aesthetically geometric designs inside. Dark wooden stools are pressed up to two-seater tables, and a narrow L-shaped counter runs along the kitchen in the back. Japanese pop plays softly around the space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]My partner and I visited for early weekday lunch, and Maruhachi boasted a steady stream of dine-in and takeout customers.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu was straightforward: the soups shared the same base with varying degrees of toppings. We opted for the Cha-shu Tamago Ramen with an extra shoyu egg. The salty, creamy broth tasted almost as though the components of chicken noodle soup had been boiled down into a single, thick stock. The noodles were somewhat firmer and less springy than I hoped. The perfectly soft-boiled shoyu eggs were phenomenal, while the equisitely tender pork was too subtle in flavor. Otherwise topped with just some shallots and nori, I found myself wanting additional toppings or components for my ramen. The service was efficient, and our bill worked out to about $15. At its best, the ramen was very good. However, some of the components were lackluster, and the overall combination of ingredients felt slightly disjointed. Nonetheless, Maruhachi would be a solid and affordable neighborhood spot for toasty comfort food on a dreary day.

Chashu ramen + curry don with an extra order of noodles was perfect for 2 to share. The ramen broth is flavourful and chashu super tender! Loved the warmth of the curry sauce!

This was a super authentic experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This is a small establishment with limited seating to approximately 20 patrons.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got the pork curry rice which was DELICIOUS. Flavors just meld so well together. A full-bodied experience with every bite. We split a ramen because we wanted to save room for the rest of our food crawl. Ramen broth was silky, smooth, flavorful, creamy without cream. Exquisite. Reminds me of the ramen in Japan. We got an extra Ajitsuke Tamago (ramen egg) and I'm so glad we did! The egg was PERFECT, marinated beautifully and so jammy on the inside. I love bamboo in my ramen so also added this as a side. Noodle refills are only $2!! Fantastic. I dare say this was one of the best ramen experiences of my life. 5 STARS.

    "aka" Ramen

Maruhachi Ra-men is a small chain that offers awesome Ramen. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location near Stanley Park provides a cozy, authentic, environment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their chicken broth is fairly creamy. I had the aka ramen, which included ground nuts and chili. It was just the right spice level. The pork shoulder chashu topping was tender and full of flavor. The other ingredients--seaweed, green onion, cilantro, bean sprout namuru, and lemon--made it quite complex. Best of all, the thin noodles were the perfect al dente, providing a satisfying meal. Another plus is the beer list. I've struggled to find good dark beers in Vancouver, and Maruhachi offers one of my favorites, Coedo Black Lager. Service was very quick--with this many customers it has to be. There's usually a line, so best to go at an odd time. I went at 3 pm and there was no problem getting in.

    Aaron A.

Came in just before closing, no line and food came quick! The white broth was super rich and very good. Egg was only okay, the yolk was more solid than I would have liked. Otherwise the normal flavour was perfectly seasoned for me.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Small and cozy restaurant.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Fast service. Friendly. Ramen hit the spot after a long day of walking in the rain. Chicken base broth was delicious. Noodles were firm. Veggies were fresh

    Aosa Seaweed Ramen

[[HIGHLIGHT]]This location is spacious and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Staff were friendly and provided a basket for our bags. The food came out quickly after ordering. The broth is rich and has a light chicken flavour. Because the noodles and soup aren't very salty, they provide a salty ramen sauce you can add to your preference (caution: it's very salty so add only a few drops at a time). I enjoyed the aosa seaweed ramen which comes with a generous portion of seaweed. I recommend getting the fried garlic chips too!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Fun place to eat at with excellent food and great prices.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I got the original and my wife got an upgraded bowl and we were very happy with our meals

    Ashley B.

This was hands down the best ramen I have ever had! Service was friendly and fast. The ramen was creamy and delicious. We loved the garlic chips to snack on and add to our bowls. Also really like that they had a vegetarian option available, which seemed kind of rare for the area.

Ramen featuring Chicken broth, thin white ramen noodles instead of the traditional egg noodles. The broth is a bit on the salty side but flavorful. The staff is very good in making sure if there is any allergies in the group and ask the kitchen to clean their dishes before cooking for the person with allergies.

You have to get ramen in Vancouver and this place is definitely a good one. [[HIGHLIGHT]]An easy place to go alone or with a friend when you need some comfort.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Tamago Ramen had a rich and creamy chicken broth, tender pork Chashu, and good toppings. I prefer a more flavorful ramen but I still really enjoyed. Dashimaki egg omelette was the perfect texture and taste. Savory and a little sweet. Service was also great, they're really nice and it feels so cozy.

Needed to find a quick bite near the hotel and we wanted ramen after a morning hike. So we found this place in a walking distance from the hotel. We got there and the serving staff seated us shortly. Great service, quite prompt and very welcoming. The store is roomy and airy. And I can smell the aroma from the broth. We ordered 2 bowls of ramen: shoyu ramen and chashu ramen. Both tasted great and not too salty. Only thing I'll comment on is the thin noodles, as I prefer the option to choose a thicker noodle. However the region of the ramen is only for thin noodles. So that's all good. I like the sign that tells you how to order the texture of the noodles. This place is a must try.

We came on a rainy Monday afternoon. It wasn't busy at all. We were going to go to ramen danbo, but our Uber driver recommended this place. I'm not sure if he had an ulterior motive to go to a closer destination. I wasn't too impressed with the ramen. The broth was a little bland. Service was fine. The space was cozy, nothing spectacular. I would not return nor recommend.

The guy in front of me, Deng, looked at me with such envy as he cut in line. This place is incredibly popular! Every time I pass by, there's a long queue. Even on rainy days, people are willing to get soaked in the rain just to have a bowl of hot tonkotsu ramen. While you're queuing, the staff will hand out menus. The ordering system is similar to Ichiran Ramen; you can choose the noodle firmness, broth consistency, spiciness, green onions, oil level, and MSG amount . The basic ramen is only $13. I added a soft-boiled egg and pickled cabbage for $2 each. Although the pickled cabbage is really expensive , I can't help it, I'm a pickled cabbage addict! The pickled cabbage paired with the rich tonkotsu broth was refreshing. The broth was flavorful but not greasy, the noodles were chewy and springy, and the portion size was just right. Overall, it's incredibly good value for money; no wonder there's always a queue. After eating, you really get that "Ah~ this is the taste of happiness" feeling

Order your food from a slip of paper you're given so that by the time you sit, they collect it and place the order. Seats are hard and it is devised where you and then leave. I had the goma vegetarian and my brother the tonkatsu. We both had thicker noodles. However, one could not tell. The vegetarian was loaded with sesame seeds. Now i love those seeds but it was way too much for my liking. Too much seeds to chew on. They also do not put any vegetables on like Hawaii does. Everything is ala carte and that adds up. I simply chose the ramen version without all the add ons. The broth was yummy but again with the loaded seeds, it made it challenging to just drink the soup. I will say, Hawaii has by far better ramen, but this place was ok too. Pricey for for what you get though.

If you're curious about the rest of their ramen lineup, the ramen flight is a fun way to try them out without committing to just one. Service has been attentive on my visits, and food comes out quickly, which is always appreciated. Last night, I tried their Dine Out Vancouver menu and thought it was excellent value. For $35, it included a Sapporo beer, five pieces of takoyaki, a bowl of Tonkotsu ramen, and mochi ice cream. It also happened to be Sake Friday, so we picked up a bottle at 50% off - hard to complain about that math. The ambience was generally fine, but the staff were doing a photoshoot for their new menu right beside our table. The lighting was extremely bright and the space felt cramped, and since the shoot lasted the entire duration of our meal, it became a bit distracting. The broth was overall quite salty but lacked richness. If I had to choose, I would say the Tonkotsu Ramen was the best. The Vegan Ramen was oddly sweet, possibly from the inari. Service was a bit slow despite visiting on a weekday. We asked for extra spicy sauce, but it did not arrive until we were almost done with the meal. We arrived around 2 PM for our reservation and were greeted warmly right away, which made for a great first impression. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The bamboo divider running through the middle of the space gave it a cozy, modern Japanese-inspired feel, and the overall atmosphere was probably my favorite part of the experience. As for the food, unfortunately it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. I ordered the seafood sizzler bowl, and while it wasn't bad by any means, it felt underwhelming for the price. The bowl was mostly rice, with a few small prawns, tiny scallops, a little roe, and some crab mixed in. I was expecting something more seafood-forward, so it ended up feeling more like a deconstructed fried rice than the premium dish I had envisioned. Same with the unagi bowl, couple small pieces of unagi cut up... The appetizers were actually the highlight of the meal and ended up being more memorable than my main course. I kept waiting for a dish to really wow me, but nothing stood out enough to make me crave a return visit. Maybe I just ordered the wrong items, because I know this place has plenty of fans. Overall, I'm glad I tried it, but based on this visit, I don't see myself making a special trip back.
