Most all reviews will repeat this, but be aware parking is very tight. We arrived at 1:25 pm and were happy to find two open spots. Earlier I'm sure the small lot was at capacity. Next, the entry door is no longer facing the street. It is on the north wall of the building off the entry to the parking lot. The entrance sign is just sharpie or pen on paper and very faded. Once inside this small converted residence there are two dining rooms. The first was full but there was open seating in the second. There isn't a lot on the walls so the room echoes your conversation to everyone in the room. A bit more art on the walls and the diner vibe would really make itself known. The food. The NYT recently put Mary and Tito's in their 41 best list in the US so I had very high expectations. Usually my wife and I order a single item and share the meal. This time we ordered knowing we'd have take home leftovers. I ordered the Mexican Turnover Combination with beef. This is a pastry crust folded over a combination of ground beef, rice and beans. I ordered the red chile with this. My wife ordered the cheese enchiladas with green chile, rice and beans. This came with a lot of chopped green chile, not a sauce. Overall it was ok, but the beans and chopped chile put down so much liquid it rapidly became a soggy texture less mess. My turnover was tasty and the red chile also ok but not up to the rave reviews I've heard. At this time, I'd rate it the third best red I've had in NM. (See my review for La Cocina in Espanola for my pick for best Red chile in NM- so far anyway ) Overall, I'm glad we finally got the opportunity to dine at this local institution. When we do give it another try, I'm going to follow the recommendation for chicarones and pork adovado. Actual rating 3.5 stars. read more

I finally got back here on a return visit to Albuquerque and actually got to eat, instead of being driven away by the long wait. It's a tiny restaurant that's very popular, so it builds up. Customers started accumulating about ten minutes before opening, and by the time the door opened, there were more than could be seated. The rest had to wait extra long because of course everyone else had just started. Signature dish here is carne adovada, which you can get in an enchilada, tostada, etc, or plain with red or green sauce on top. Shredded meat, pretty tasty, and unusually the beans were better than the rice. I also had a tamale, decently moist, no husk. This is a good local food place, but didn't strike me as fabulous. read more

I haven't been here in years and now I remember why. But, you enter from the side door and NOT the 2 doors in front. It's very basic New Mexican food that's kinda "meh." The food we had all needed salt and more flavor. The prices weren't bad considering how everyone has raised their menu prices. The service was good and food came out fast. I forgot to take pics of our food since I was w a group of people... sorry. But, we all got different Combo plates. They were good but not great. The bldg is old but well maintained with clean dining rooms. Simple old cafe furniture and a bit of an old Landmark place near downtown. So excited to see it opened. Opening is on the north side but I remember so many years ago was on the east side. It's a North Valley gem. It's been there since before I was born in the early 60's. Service was fantastic from the moment I walked in the door. My unsweetened tea was always full. And my enchiladas were delicious. Red chili made my nose run a bit which made it even more perfect! The rice was perfectly done, no added veggies. Beans were great and my enchiladas were great! I love authenticity of this wonderful local restaurant. There's history there. For those who began and those who continue to this beautiful tradition. If you catch it open, take an empty spot on 4th street or in the back. Stopped by Mary & Tito's while visiting Albuquerque for work. I was looking for something that was real, authentic and that locals actually love and I was not disappointed. Mary & Tito's is a landmark of the city and we had to give it a try. The space was no frills but warm and inviting. It had the homegrown atmosphere that we were looking for. The food was good. I had the stuffed sopapilla with rice and beans which was my first time trying it and it was pretty good. I also tried the chicaronnes, another first for me and definitely worth a try if you're a meat lover. I would definitely go back to try other items on the menu. It was great place to stop by for lunch and a great first stop during our time in Albuquerque. read more

The food was actually tasteless. The chile, red and green, had little heat and no flavor.......very disappointing. The chile relliano was over cooked, the beef taco was good and the red chile enchilada was.......disappointing. The refried beans were the best I have ever had.......and I am not! A refried bean person. But those are the only thing I would go back for. Service was fast, friendly and prompt. The diner-like atmosphere is loud, but tolerable. We stopped by Mary and Tito's for an early lunch today. We had some high hopes. We had a bit of a wait which was fine. As we waited I noticed that this by far was one of the cleanest restaurants I have been in a while. The floors and baseboards were immaculately clean. I noticed that there were many older ladies working as servers and a younger gentleman. I assumed maybe they were all family. I also noticed the fresh flowers on every table which was a very nice touch. We got seated and they brought out the drinks, salsa and chips. For my taste the salsa needed more salt, but had a good flavor but lacked heat. I ordered the large combination plate with tamale, taco, enchilada beans and rice. I also added a chile relleno. My husband ordered the carne adovada burrito. The meat was tender and food tasted good. The red chile was delicious. It had zero heat but the flavor was on spot. The taco could have had more meat. It had a lot of lettuce. The tortilla reminded me of the ones you get at Cotsco that are prepaid and you have to cook. The tamale had a good meat to masa ration. The chile relleno was a let down. It could have used a bit more cheese. It was very greasy. The best part of the meal was the enchilada. It was simple and delicious. Something you would get at grandmas house. Rolled with cheese a little onion and smothered with red chile. It brought back some fond memories of eating at my grandmas house. read more

I was really encouraged to try authentic NM cuisine I read some reviews and this seemed like kind of place. I had the Carne Adovada and their daily special enchilada with the red sauce. Legit amazing. Great atmosphere and even better food. I was in Albuquerque for a quick work trip and really enjoyed finding this gem.

I should say the servers were amazing but the lady at the counter is absolutely rude . She seems like human interaction is so tiring, she talks down to customers. We asked her twice for a slice of cake and she just blew us off and said it slipped her mind. I forgot to unlock my card and she yells that my card was declined in front of every one in line ... that was embarrassing. The waiter went to refill our waters and she stopped him and said no we had to leave because other people were waiting. I love this place and came here after my mom's funeral to just be treated like trash by her smh she needs to learn how to smile and greet costumes if she is going to work the register. I'm the executive chef of a restaurant here in Los Angeles and if someone on my team was like that toward my costumers we would be sitting down for a pretty good talk. read more

I am not sure what all the fuss is about. Mary and Tito's is supposedly renowned for their red chile carne adovada, which is what I ordered. The pork in the carne adovada was in large chunks. Instead of being cut across the grain, it was cut with the grain, which resulted in long stringy pieces of meat. It was tender, but not pleasant to eat because of its stringy texture. The red chile was not exceptional; just average. Beans lacked much depth of flavor, also. Service was non-descript and average. The tall person taking my order was doing his job, writing up my order. He was robotic and lacked any discernable personality. The entire experience was "fine." As per that descriptor, nothing stood out enough to tantalize me for a return visit. read more

Locals love Mary and Tito's. This no-frills place gets to the point - serving the red sauce it is known for. Because I am a bit of a contrarian I decided to try both red and green, just to be sure I wasn't missing out on anything. I wasn't. The red sauce is what you come here for. That, and the wonderful home made tortillas, slightly charred, just a bit chewy - nothing to do with those pale, wispy discs you buy in the supermarket. The value for money cannot be argued with. It may take a while for you to get noticed before someone seats you. And you may need to ask for extra salad to properly balance the flavors. But these are minor quibbles. This is a solid place for New Mexico signature dishes. A few notes: they close at 3pm. No alcohol. Pay at the counter once you are done. Credit cards are fine. read more

(In my experience, this is a rarity: oftentimes the second generation fumbles the ball handing things to the third. These folks today are sharper than ever - and they have to be, because it's now a foodie destination on top of being a local fave.) Delicious red (from a Salem, NM small farm, perhaps the best you'll find served in any Albuquerque restaurant) _and_ green. Phenomenal chicharrones. World class carne adovada. "Mexican wedding cake" is kind of more of a pineapple/carrot cake and it sells out fast - quite yummy (worth getting one to share at the table). Tasty complimentary chips and salsa. Great service - constant drink refills and no hassle about guests' silly requests. Friendly and welcoming, fast and inexpensive. They have all the business they need - come or don't come, makes no difference. The only one who will miss out if you don't come is you. Parking can be challenging - they have spots out back and street spots in the front, but these fill up quickly. I first visited this restaurant in 1966 with a friend from the University of Albuquerque. I was so impressed with their absolutely out-of-this-world bowl of Green Chiles!! It was so burning spicy hot that I couldn't even finish it in few minutes. Never had I ever tasted such hot dish before.. But I liked it so much! I highly recommend Mary and Tito's. First of all, when you drive up to the restaurant you have to know that you are walking into a traditional New Mexican home style restaurant with paper napkins and tile floor with nothing super fancy. Ok ok,, so no white table clothe or fancy hostess, but let me tell you about the service and the food!!!! OOhh my goodness the red chile sauce is amazing, just the perfect amount of spice. Most of the time the green is hotter than the red chile, but the carne adovado stuffed sopapillas w/egg over the top are to die for!!!! From the bold and spicy red chili to the slow cooked pork for the carne adovada, everything here was amazing. I had a friend visiting from California and I had asked some locals what was the best place for authentic NM food to enjoy. This funky little place was recommended. I had the chili rellenos , and they were okay, but not the best I ever have tasted. They were scrawny and had almost no cheese inside. The salsa was good, as well as, the spicy rice. She had a flaky pastry turnover stuffed with seasoned pork strips. She enjoyed it and said it was absolutely delicious. The service was adequate, but the server was not very enthusiastic, with taking our order and serving our meal. Everything was just placed down with no pleasantries. I had to go to the hostess to get togo boxes, as our server became scarce, and did not check back at all to see if we needed anything else. This has been ind of my favorite restaurants for close to 30 years. The chile is my favorite. I used to only get the red , but now I get Christmas. I often take a pint to go. It's family owned and operated and the love , quality and consistency has only continued to improve over time. Mary was there every time I went for lunch . Two of the cooks have been there for most of that time as well. Mary's daughter and grandson's are there enthusiastically serving what I think is the gold standard in New Mexican cuisine. Everything is amazing but I have some favorites. A side relleno with Xmas on the side . Blue corn , ground beef enchiladas with red chile and an egg .
