Located towards the northwest on the grounds of City Hall, this statue honors Mary Ann McCracken (1770-1866). In English and in Gaelic, it reads, "Abolitionist, educator, social reformer and businesswoman." The statue depicts her in a full flowing dress handing out an abolitionist leaflet identified by the embossed Wedgewood brooch "Am I not a man and brother" image of a bound slave. It was unveiled on International Women's Day, March 8 2024. She was a notable social activist and philanthropist, born into a wealthy Presbyterian family and was the sister of Henry Joy McCracken, who led the United Irishmen Rebellion in 1798. Mary Ann was passionate about social justice, pushing for the eradication of slavery, education reform, child welfare, and prison reform. She worked relentlessly against slavery at Belfast ports until her 80s, warning emigrants about the slave trade in America.
