This shop is mostly clothing and bric-a-brac and though it's quite small, there's a lot contained within. Staff are really friendly and the store is usually quite busy at any time of the day. I managed to find myself a cute little romper for £4.50 and a Nine West satchel bag for £7. Very reasonably priced and so worth allowing the time to explore!

And it was only £30, which is more than a bargain in anyone's book. Unfortunately, my then boyfriend who I was walking with didn't pick up on any of the ten or so hints I dropped on the way home, even though it was 3 weeks to christmas (!) and so sadly it doesn't belong to me. Whoever does own it, you are very lucky. And you have amazing taste. The moral of my ramble is this: whilst some charity shops' stock is not the sort of thing you'd drool over in the window, this place definitely does not fall into that category. It's like a cross between a vintage clothes shop and a one-off homeware boutique, but at amazing prices. What's not to love?!

The other ones on the street, namely Oxfam, Cancer Research and Barnado's are so much nicer to look at! One the one hand, the other stores may just be better at concealing the fact that all these products have been owned by someone else (a fact I'm sadly not too comfortable with) but it'd also help if Shelter was a little bit better organised. What it does have going for it is that it's not as strict on what it sells, so you could leave with anything from a tunic made in India (I did!), some cooking utensils, a book, or a colourfully sequined hat!

I particularly like browsing through the book sections in charity shops and they had a whole section called "Old and Interesting" with some pretty old school books including old film reviews which I thought was pretty cool. The staff here are friendly and on my visit they were busy working away organising new stock onto the shelves. They also have a section with brand new items including gardening accessories such as cool watering cans and gloves. They also had a box of rubber ducks for £1.99 a pop.

However, due to the cheapness of these items the stock moves fairly quickly so a one off visit is not always very successful. The bric-a-brac section is also very good with a selection of kitchen appliances usually available. These are very tempting at the prices and I did have to stop myself from buying a second kettle. All in this shop is cheap, but this does mean that the best items don't spend long in the shop.

The Bethany Shop is absolutely wonderful. Given that it's a charity shop there's no real theme to…read morethe stuff it sells. They tend to get a lot of furniture in, but then they also get plenty of clothes, electricals and cool old leather suitcases. They also have CDs, records, cassettes. You name it. The thing that makes The Bethany Shop stand out from other shops, however, is the quality of stuff they seem to get in. Nearly new electrical items line the right hand side of the shop. The furniture they get donated is astounding. The oak chest of drawers in there today for £40 was hugely impressive. This is one of a few Bethany Shops in Edinburgh. They're all very good but this is my favourite. Whether it's the generous people of Morningside donating their high quality things or the helpful, friendly staff that seems to make this one stand out I'm not sure, but I always end up buying stuff I don't need in there. All for a good cause though.

In terms of…read morefurniture, you can expect to get chairs for about £5 (or slightly more for less basic chairs) and tables and sideboards will be in the region of £15. If you need furniture on a budget you must come have a look here as there are some items that are amazing good values - chairs from here will be cheaper than some books in other charity shops. The other area of note is in electrical items and you do get some great items here. The other week I was passing in the evening and saw a keyboard for £30 that was a top of the line keyboard with all the bells and whistles; in was in good condition and I imagine had barely been used. If it wasn't for the fact that it had been reserved I probably would have made a return trip during the day to pick it up, because at these prices you are tempted to buy anything. I guess that is the main criticism I would hold against this shop and that is that it is such good value you end up buying things you don't need and don't have room for, but as criticisms go I'm not sure that's one they're going to fret about.

Immersing themselves in the current trend for vintage, retro and "granny" fashion, the ladies who work in here are kind, lovely and window dressing machines! They have bunting, wool collections, a huge selection of crockery and appropriate places to set out their clothing. There is a wicker chair (not for sale) in the corner and loads of old knitting and craft books usually. Whatever donations they get, they sure know how to display them in a delicious manner. You can't help but think this store is cute, quaint and full of hidden treasures in the form of great donations. This charity shop has got the task of displaying stock down to a fine art. When any lady sees the old vintage cushion decorated in ornate, pretty brooches, they'll be sold, too.

There's always an abundance of sheets/pillowcases, duvet covers and tea towels. There's often fabric samples and doilies, thread and buttons. There's also a box of knitting needles if you're missing a certain size, it's worth having a rummage. The prices here are really reasonable as well, if you know what you're looking for, there's always a selection of vintage china and glassware to pick through. They have a small children's section at the front which quite often have toys in very good condition. I've never had much luck with their clothing section but I've picked up some fun jewellery over the years. Bonus points as they always have free range eggs from a local farm on the counter. You get half a dozen for a pound fifty and they are very tasty from memory.

In addition to this, the prices are all very reasonable, unlike some charity shops where you end up paying more for an item than it cost to buy brand new. I also like popping in here as I feel guilty when I dodge the Shelter people in the street and continuously ignore the e-mails that they send about sponsored charity work. Sorry Shelter.

I have to admit that I am not really the type of person who enjoys rooting through rails of musty clothing that someone may have died in, but if you ignore the handwritten price tags and mish mash of items, this could almost be a commercial shop. After a mini-browse, I ended up finding a brilliant smart gray dress (formally of Miss Selfridge) and a silk scarf; my bounty only set me back £5 and I got the job, result. Although this shop is not located in a particularly wealthy area, whoever is donating stock is very generous. It's definitely worth having a look around.

So, you can buy lovely vintage clothing and also feel smug that you're doing something for charity. Barnardos Vintage is a lovely little treasure trove of a place and the staff are very sweet and pretty. It's all very charmed-life Amelie-style. I'm particularly pleased as I got the coat I have been looking for all my life... I think I'm in love!
