At first I was hesistant to go here, after reading the other reviews I thought I might not really fit here after a day on the world's largest industrial fair (HannoverMesse) and wearing a suit and tie... but I'd say this place welcomes everybody. Most importantly: delicious food! I had never tried Afghan food before (or let's say, knowingly went to a restaurant labeld that way), but as the other reviews already said: very good! When it comes to decoration I find it quite nice. They must have renovated and painted the whole thing recently, in comparison to the other reviews. Warm colors on the walls with matching carpets, well placed lamps, and candles on the tables. What I liked was the differentiation of seatings: a slightly dark area where you sit on the floor on traditional carpet, two tables next to that suitable for romantic couples, a larger area with tables for 4-6 guest, and a slightly elevated part with translucent roof so it's quite bright. So you can find your level of either traditional, romance, just-meeting-friends or business meeeting. In addition there is also an outdoor seating area which I assume to be nice in summer time (it was around 6 °C so no wonder it was empty outside). The staff actually was very helpful (though not boasting with smiles and friendly emotion). I told the waitress it's my first time in this restaurant and I don't know any of the dishes, so she asked my preferences and gave me a recommendation. By the way, for a restaurant they have a quite broad selection of nice cocktails, with happy hour 8-9 pm every day, and an additional late happy hour Fridays and Saturdays from 12-01am - all cocktails for 5 Euro only. read more

As far as cuisine goes in Germany, this Afghan restaurant is ethnic as it gets and delicious. I dream and salivate for this restaurant now that I'm no longer living in Hannover. I miss this restaurant. My favorite dish is their is the lamb and lentils in borani rice. I remember this place as it if was yesterday, it is that good and that cool. There's a laid back atmosphere, so kick back enjoy some peppermint tea and converse with your friends while you wait for your meal. This restaurant is hidden away from the center of the city, behind an alleyway on one of the main streets. You need to walk through the alley, all the way to the end, and the restaurant is to your left. When the weather is great and outdoor seating is open, you can chill by their little garden there and enjoy your meal; otherwise, the rustic decor in the restaurant will hypnotize you. When I lived in Hannover, this was always my favorite place to go. I've eaten here numerous times over and over again, and the food does not disappoint if you are looking for an ethnic flair. read more

One doesn't often describe a meal or restaurant as funny, but my experience at Masa definitely was. First the décor is 'early garage sale', old unmatched chairs and tables, random wall hangings, thoughtless lighting; a general sense of what-the-hell-do-you-expect-we-only had-fifty-Euro-to-work-with-and-we-needed-to buy-cigarettes-too! Which would be meaningful, and I took it to mean, 'Here our food is so elegant that your surroundings will disappear'. Well, it wasn't quite like that, but the longer I was there the more charmed I became by the whole thing. The waitress seemed bored by us the moment we sat down. Eventually she sauntered over and we ordered drinks and waited. I stared at a blanket nailed to the wall, had it ever been washed? She returned only speaking German so I was at the mercy of my companion's translation. Ordering took about 20 minutes. We had examined the menu in her prolonged absence and decided we didn't have a clue about Pakistani or Afghani dining (I never did figure out which it is) and we would defer to our waitress's suggestions. When this was posed to her, she said, and this is a near quote, 'I eat at home before my shift so I really don't know what dishes to recommend. I haven't tried any.' Well that left us hanging. So we ordered randomly, and hoped for the best, perhaps in the way the decorator had flung these objects onto the walls and around the room and hoped for the same. We weren't disappointed, the food was good and plentiful, very plentiful. We stuffed ourselves on enormous platters of lamb, chicken, rice, lentils and other saucy dishes. Masa is one of the more reasonable meals in Hannover and a far cry from German or Italian fare. It is also a far cry from the ubiquitous robotic service and Germanic pride so often encountered, not to sound unappreciative of the norms, but Masa is kind of like traveling without having to leave home. The best ethnic food I had in Hannover. Delicious Daal, the lamb and rice with nuts and raisins is not to be missed. Summertime in the garden with the rose trellis is gorgeous, the interior of the restaurant is a bit like someone's summerhouse - not overly furnished but comfortable, and not up-to-the minute chic, but relaxed and full of light. You'll see the sign and a dark alley. It's way at the end. When you're wondering if it's the right place, just keep going and it's on the left. I don't know German and their English is limited so I asked for a lamb dish and went with the first one recommended. It was delicious. The meat was tender and almost falling off the bone. The rice was flavorful and had almond slices, raisins, carrots, and who-knows-what. Restroom is to the right of the bar. read more
