What is Masala Bazaar? Is it a grocers? Is it a butchers? Is it a restaurant? In fact, it is all three. Bizarre, right?
Located between Cardiff's multicultural City Road and Albany Road, Masala Bazaar is a relatively new establishment and is certainly unique.
The downstairs section, with rear parking, offers any Indian convenience product, fresh or frozen, you can think of and also supply fresh exotic fruit and vegetables.
A popular halal butchers is also on-site and the meat looks very fresh. This is presumably where the meat for the upstairs restaurant comes from, which I will rave about shortly.
If one had to compare Masala Bazaar to any other establishment, it looks like an Indian Tesco Express on the bottom floor with a hidden gem of an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant on the top floor, accompanied by an adjacent Indian clothes, jewellery and cooking utensil shop.
I have visited the restaurant every few months since early 2010 and it has made steady improvement. It appears the restaurant has been under new management since early 2011 and the quality of the food has skyrocketed since the reshuffle. An element of innovation and panache regarding the food has been missing in previous visits, but my most recent visit in February 2011 left me more satisfied and impressed than ever.
Service in the restaurant is friendly and the new set-up seem much happier to accommodate your wishes than previous service.
Starters include delicious bhajees, samosas, spring rolls, pappadoms, salads and dips. These are a delectable prelude to the main courses, which taste better than most Indian restaurants in Cardiff. Yes, I said it! Surprising huh?
The traditional chicken tikka masala is a highlight, not taking anything away from their lamb curries, vegetable curries and prawn curries. If you're lucky, you will have the chance to enjoy the jalapeno pepper curry! The rice is fluffy and the birriani packs a punch. If you require a freshly made naan bread to mop it all up, inform the waiter.
Desserts are limited however, but if you like Indian specialities like halwa and gulab jamun, you won't be disappointed.
It is certainly worth a visit. It might not be for everyone, but I predict Masala Bazaar will be around for a long time should they keep up their recently acquired high standards. read more
