We have driven past this place for a couple of years and read very positive reviews so we finally reminded ourselves to give them a try. Great decision! Excellent authentic Indian food made with fresh, hand picked ingredients. The owner was very friendly and talkative during our entire visit, except while he was in the kitchen preparing our meals. He explained in detail the 9 different entrees and their ingredients while we were deciding what to choose. I had the Chicken Aloo Paratha which was outstanding and was spiced exactly as I requested, medium heat. My wife's Chicken Marsala was also delicious and spiced perfectly. The owner was very attentive and we chatted with him and listened to his stories for some time while finishing our meal, one of the nicest owner's I ever met at a small establishment such as this. This place only has a few things on the menu, but everything is absolutely delicious and perfect. The prices are a little more than you expect but the portions make it so worth it. I always have enough to feed my partner and I for a couple of days and it's amazing. The Chana Masala is my favorite and I could eat their naan forever. As daily patrons of this establishment, my husband was appalled by the completely unacceptable behavior of another patron who has since posted a very unsavory review on yelp. This other customer verbally mis-treated the owner simply because he was not allowed to park his bike inside. He went so far as to mimic the owners language. My husband stepped in and defended the owner of our local grocery/deli. We would like to say in support that the food is amazing and we have always been treated with respect and kindness. This is one of the best "hole in the wall" Indian restaurants I've been too. Top notch and tasty. Small menu and small dining area but the place puts out amazing food. The couple who operate are super nice. Don't let the outward appearance turn you away. We had the Chicken Masala and Frichik Vindaloo (soy) Naan Bread is made fresh and comes out piping hot. There is ONE Indian restaurant I consider better and it's in Seattle. Unfortunately, I have to take away a star because there's some ingredient or spice that's not sitting well with the wife's tummy. I have that old iron constitution so I'm not sure what's up. But in addition, I also find the sauces a bit too runny to have the correct "mouthfeel" I understand that cream is omitted from the sauces but there are other thickeners that would work too. The Saag, I still believe is quite good and but having tried all the vindolo, the curry, the garlic shrimp and the chana masala, it's just not quite there! I'll be back eventually but Swagat in Beaverton is still the gold standard for us. read more

When we first walked into Masala Box, we did not know what to expect. Upon entering, Vijay greeted us with ear to ear smiles. He's the proprietor, advocate of the culinary arts and cook of this hidden gem located in Gladstone. We were visiting Portland and missed the taste of home, but were in search of something outside the confines of the busy Portland epicenter. With Yelp as our North Star, we came across this place. It was vividly apparent how much Vijay loved food. He was very accommodating and took into consideration of everyone's spice tolerance in my party. We decided to order one of everything. His menu is simple. The restaurant is great for grab and go. I particularly enjoyed the Shrimp Vindaloo. They were plump, cooked to perfection and engorged in an uber-flavorful sauce that sent my taste buds into overdrive. The Naan bread came out soft, buttered and crunchy in just the right places. The Saag was revelatory and a totally different take on what I've experienced in other Indian restaurants. For my vegetarian family, the FriChik Vindaloo evoked a texture of lamb, studded in and around a bath of red gravy. The samosas and chutney were some of the best I had. The spice blend in the potatoes was truly special. All in all a solid place for delicious, un-adulterated, no-frills and down home cooking. I'll be back in a heartbeat. read more
