There was a Wednesday night special of: 1. Single popadom with the chilli chutney, etc.. 2. Various starters - I chose the mixed kebab. 3. various mains, but I wanted my chicken tikka madras rather than just chicken madras. They accommodated at no extra charge. 4. Coffee or ice cream - I decided against it, but for no other reason other than I didn't fancy having them. I heard someone pay a compliment on the flavour of the coffee, so it wasn't negative from my point of view. Number two was fine, hot in temperature, but lacked the spice that i am used to at the Redolence in Redditch. Number 3 was very spicy and very flavoursome. My only criticism was that it was chicken in a sauce. Whereas, again at the Redolence, theirs includes peppers, and onions, and just gives more body to the meal. However, I have to say i liked the sauce. So all of this for £10.95, so not a bad deal really. Not realising the very important point right at the start of the review, I accepted an alcohol free Cobra. It tasted like every other alcohol free lager. Sweet, and very heavy in the taste of the barley. Really friendly staff, and really cared by asking for opinions on the food, and not the usual 10 minute check that you get at other restaurants. If I went again, I'd be armed with my own alcohol, and I would eat off the main menu and ask more questions as to what is in the curry. Just sauce doesn't do it for me.

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Yelp lead me to a top rated…read morerestaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar's is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange - a solidly laminated sheet - but it had all the usual curries that I've come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I've never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all "livery", three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the "handi" was listed as 'just like we have it at home' on the menu so I thought I'd give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes (the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn't "hot" spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let's just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect (first time in a bottle, it's usually draft). A great meal!

After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Yelp to the rescue!…read more We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.
