We tried both ways and enjoyed the visible parking lot more. Well marked trail that isn't too difficult (well maybe the part with the views is a little harder).

There's a couple of ways to access this park, depending on if you're here for boating or hiking. If you're here for boating, there's a large lot on Ross Road, between Old Furnace and Ross Pond. If you're here for hiking, there's a nice large lot at the northern end, off of S Frontage Road. There are a number of trails here, and you can make a pretty good day out of it if you want to take a decent hike. The west side of the pond is up on a ridge, where rock climbers have attached ropes at the vista areas, possibly semi permanently. There are some nice views here of the pond, and the trails are mostly well blazed. The Blue Blazed Old Furnace Trail could use some reblazing, but the other trails were fine. A nice little park to check out if you are at this end of CT.

It was our first weekend of camping and we actually did stay an extra night. But we only stayed the extra night to see our friends who we haven't seen in a long time. Otherwise we have would've been out of there probably Saturday morning after arriving on Friday night. As we drove up to the campground I could see junk cars lining the street before the entrance. Then we pulled into the campground and were immediately accosted by the dumpster with piles of junk next to it and a house with a bunch of boats and farm equipment in the yard. Mike went up and registered which was simple and easy. Then we went through the gate and around to our campsite. As we drove to our campsite there was a tractor parked in the middle of the road and we had to drive around it on the grass to get to our campsite. That seemed odd. Then we drove to this field which had a nice green grass but no trees and this was where our campsite was located. Now we live in a city in Rhode Island and on a road that is fairly busy but not nearly as busy as the road that was about three campers length from our campsite. I was absolutely floored that we would be spending the weekend that close to a very busy road and listening to that traffic constantly. Then I looked around behind our campsite and there were piles and piles and huge piles of junk. Piles of wood , piles of equipment, piles of metal, piles of stone. It was just junk everywhere. Definitely a hoarder's farm. So on one side we had the main road with the traffic and behind us our view was of a bunch of junk. And it just didn't end there. Everywhere you looked was junk. It was like camping in a junkyard. We took a drive the next day because we had read that this was a popular campground with decent ratings. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why that is. We saw many sites which appeared to be seasonal sites. We saw several places where new construction was going on. None of the construction was completed and they actually had a functioning gravel bank right in the campground. There were campers parked next to it and across from it. The newer campsites had gravel instead of grass where you would park your camper. I could see that many people had been seasonal there for a long time because they had their own lawns and sheds and decorations that appear to have been there a long time. But when you got to the end of pretty much every road there was construction equipment working on the weekend, there was construction equipment lying on the side of the road, there was just more junk everywhere. As far as amenities, they have a man-made springfed pond. They do say that it is stocked but there is no swimming pool. They have a baseball field that needs reseeding because the grass is terrible. They do have a playground which looked pretty good. They had a couple of activities the weekend we arrived but we did not take part in them because we are still avoiding crowds. I wish I could say something good about them besides the fact that they are kind and friendly people but I can't. We will never go back again it was just not an experience that was relaxing and that rural atmosphere that you look for when you camp.

We were looking for a short hike with a water view and decided to check out the Quinebaug Lake…read moreState Park, and the Quinebaug Lake Loop Trail. According to Wikipedia, the Quinebaug Lake State Park comprises 181 acres in the town of Killingly, Connecticut. The state park offers fishing, hiking and non-motorized boating on the lake (aka the Wauregan Reservoir). Google Map directions took us to a dead end street, which does offer access to the trail, but you may/may not be able to park there. There are no signs indication that you can park here. However, they park does have a large, free to park, parking lot though it can be tricky to find. Look for a paved access road off of Shepard Hill Road, which is about a half mile long, and takes you to a large gravel parking lot. The lake trail which is a fairly easy trail and 2.1 miles long, takes about an hour to circumnavigate. Traveling clockwise, the footing is initially rocky, but gets progressively easier after the first quarter mile. We had no problem on this trail, but did notice that Camp Quinebaug is located about half way across the lake. Since it was closed, we walked through the camp and continued on the trail. There are no trespassing signs there, so we're not sure if you can cut through the camp in the summer, or if there is a longer way around it. We looked up the camp and found some interesting information: Camp Quinebaug is a summer Day Camp in Killingly. It is a camp for children with developmental disabilities, funded and operated by the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services and The Friends of Camp Quinebaug. It provides a unique summer camp experience for school age children with developmental disabilities and has the only beach on the lake. Approximately 90-100 campers per season enjoy the benefits of this 6 week fully accessible camp environment. We enjoyed our Quinebaug Lake Loop Trail hike though we found Pulaski State Park, which is about 20 minutes away, to have a more beautiful setting and interesting hike around their pond. Pulaski also has picnic tables and a rest room, but it's likely much busier in the summer!

The lake is beautiful...I could have stayed out there all day kayaking, and the fishing was phenomenal. If you are looking for someplace to get away from it all, I definitely recommend checking out this campground.

great wooded hike starting in Pulaski State park on the snow-shoe trail then completed the orange…read moretrail which take you out on an eastern route put of the park where you will spend most of the walk between Pulaski and George Washington camp ground. some great features of the remains of a home and an associated man-made pond. in time the orange trail does turn west and ends on the dam at the western edge of Pulaski. The trails are hilly and so.e trees are down, but none interfered with the walk. I would category this as a easy hike. we will be back in the fall yo be sure!

Cheap eats done right... nothing fancy but large portions... quality ingredients and honestly everything we had was delicious... There were other couples eating alongside us and we all agreed that the food was fantastic... The sandwiches were loaded with stuff, the chicken wings were plump, crispy and on point! The little store they had also was well stocked with campaign essentials... forgot ketchup? don't worry... they have it and if i recall it was like $2 for the bottle... Need sticks for smores? $1 a package... Staples and an awesome price.. Thank you for the Fantastic lunch......

I have a lot of experiences on this 78 (ish) mile trek. I've done it for leisure, done it for…read moretraining, helped others accomplish it...etc etc etc. I love hiking the east, but this is not at the top of my list. It was more of a Rhode Island resident bucket list. A good portion of the 'trail' is road (about 50% country roads). There is a great book to assist and give insightful info. However, unless you have a friend or library to lend it to you it's about 100$ lol At any rate, it is a fine walkabout to go from one point in RI to the next. My personal recommendation is to hike it North to South and dive in the ocean. Especially if you do it in the winter. Pure exhilaration! Happy trails and don't forget to sign the books at each end!

If you have the time and ability, this is a FANTASTIC way to explore the beauty our state has to offer. Through-hike it or break it into smaller segments over a series of trips... this is a trek that can be enjoyed by hikers with all levels of experience. In the 1990s, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the US National Park Service teamed up to make this trail a reality. I chose to traverse it from north to south so that I could end at Blue Shutters Beach and dip my feet in the ocean. This path meanders through lush forests and historic farmlands, past miles of stone walls and blue blazes, over boulder fields and numerous rivers, and offers a chance at connecting with a variety of wildlife including deer, turkeys, birds, cows, and so much more. This is a glimpse into not only what Rhode Island is today but what it once was. Old foundations, cemeteries, mill sites, barns and farm equipment pop up throughout. "The North South Trail" by Cliff Vanover is a fantastic resource if you are planning this hike. It is out of print but several of the RI Libraries have copies you can access. I completed the trail over 6 days and recruited friends and family to assist with car spots. It is possible to complete the trail in one go over shorter or longer periods of time. There are plentiful nearby campgrounds as staying on trail is not allowed. It is difficult to sum up my entire experience on-trail; I encourage you to immerse yourself in the outdoors and check out this path less travelled. It is well-maintained, easy to follow, and was absolutely beautiful this October with its abundant foliage. The sand dunes, sea grass, and blue crashing waves at the finality of my trek was a sight to be seen. Try it from south to north and hook up with the Midstate Trail in MA for a route all the way to NH!
