My sister and I came for a massage before heading to a festival last weekend. This was our first time at this location. Upon entering, the nice lady at the front desk told us that one of us could go in if the other one wouldn't mind waiting. We said that was fine and so she went over our "sign in procedure" (reviewing body parts that we wanted more focus on or parts we wanted to avoid). Then my sister went in first and I waited in the waiting area. I was offered a whole cold bottle of water, which for some of you might feel like a standard, but I thought it was a wonderful add! The massage was great. The masseuse was polite and paused frequently to ask if I was doing okay (if I needed more or less pressure, feeling ok, etc.) She was able to get the knots I really needed to get rid of. The hot stone was presented and I said sure why not...but it didn't really do much for me. It wasn't warm enough. Though the service was good, the ending was not very consistent to the whole experience. We came in with the understanding that the price was $39.99 and with tip would be $48 each. We only brought cash with us and paid together. We handed her a $100 bill thinking we'd get back $6 after tip. I think she got confused as to why we wanted to change back. After much back and forth, we realized that the services weren't listed with updated prices. The service was $49 instead of $39. (which means if we calculated with tip, we underpaid her by $20.) We felt bad walking out because we thought we brought a 20% tip with us but we ended up only giving them $2. Just beware if you go, it's still pretty decently priced but bring extra cash or a card in case it happens to you. 1 star knock off purely for the fact that the advertised price was not the true price. read more

Falsely stated that there was no ATM fee after stating that their "credit card machine wasn't working" and then gave me incorrect amount back when I paid with cash (gave themselves more as a tip). Signs state that they accept cash, debit, or credit. Also signs suggesting tip amounts are incorrect. Massage was good though. read more

The service is not consistent. The price used to be $39.99, but has recently gone up to $49.99. I have been going for years, but you can't lways get the same massage therapist hence sometimes the massage is great and sometimes not. About year ago they began haggling people about leaving more money for a tip. I usually leave 20%, whether it's good or not, but they are requesting 25%+ based on what the average cost of a massage, which is unethical. I was in there and the guy told them, "if you want my tip predicated on a $65 massage, then you should've charged me $65" and gave them 20% of the $39.99 and told them he wouldn't be back. A colleague recommended Massage Ultra and cautioned me that it had a cheap, hole in the wall massage vibe. I decided to give it a try anyway, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The booking process was messy because I went online to make an appointment at the Cambridge location and went through the booking process, only for the final screen to say "Time slot not available." So, I tried booking another time--same error message. Then I switched to the Brookline location and had the same experience. A few minutes later, I got three back-to-back text message notifications saying all THREE of those appointments were confirmed. Since you can't cancel them online, I called the next morning and they said only my Brookline appointment was confirmed, so I just went with that. Miki did a wonderful job. The online survey had you click parts of your body you wanted emphasized or deemphasized during the massage, and while I don't think that data actually went through to the Brookline location, Miki was sure to ask and clarify what my areas of tension were. She used a perfect medium pressure, and one thing I really appreciated was that she spent a good chunk of time on my problem area, which was my left hamstring. Most places will take five minutes on the problem area and then go back to the regularly scheduled program, but Miki didn't do that, and it helped me feel much better. Also, unlike so many massage studios in Boston that are plagued with really uncomfortable face holders that smash your chin into a metal bar, the tables at Massage Ultra are fine. Obviously, Massage Ultra is way cheaper than most places at $40 for 60 minutes. I gave a $15 tip, so I did not face the tipping pressure that a lot of other reviewers have experienced. I have had massages that cost an extra $140 for a massage that wasn't that much better (although they had elevated touches like essential oils and peaceful music in the room). Massage Ultra needs to look at their web site and online booking process as it has some issues, but even with all that, it is an AMAZING value. read more

I went twice. First time great and the staff was polite. After I got on the hook, the second time, the staff became lazy. She said that her thumb was painful and stopped working on my stiff area. When I paid, I paid over 35% of the tip. She was very unhappy and said that the tip was too low. The staff's name was Linda. These people are so greedy. I've been to Massage Ultra, Porter Square 12+ times over the past few years. Generally speaking I've had good experiences, which is why I've gone back. That said, the last 2 times I have been, have been really bad and I've soured on this place. The last time I was there the massage therapist started talking about a good tip 5 minutes into the service. It was very awkward. When I was paying and only gave a $15 tip, she began to complain, asking for $20. It was really uncomfortable. The idea that a tip might be commensurate with the service is lost on this establishment and they're very shameless in their asking for more money. After getting over the tip issue a few months ago, I came back today, and today was the worst massage I've ever had in my life by a mile. It was not enjoyable or helpful in any way. There was no system, order, or sense to anything the massage therapist was doing. She would do one thing to one side, and something completely different on the other, or forget the other side entirely. And none of it was done well. She did my left arm, forgot my right. Was jumping from foot to shoulder to back to other leg. It was terrible. $40 plus a tip for an absolutely awful experience. Okay so a $40 massage for 60 minutes? Yes pleaseee! Of course they want a $20 tip, but regardless a $60 massage is cheap! The massage therapists I've seen here have been skilled and I'd see again. Not as many frills as some of the more expensive places nearby but for what you're paying this is absolutely the best case scenario. I was recommended this place by a colleague whose been coming here for years. It's easy for me to walk to so I finally gave it a try and keep going back. Bring cash! They do not accept credit cards for payment. They also have an ATM on site that you can use to get cash if you have a debit card on hand. Tip is REQUIRED while on the sign it says voluntary I did not have enough cash on me for both tip and be able to pay for my groceries with the cash I had on me and they FORCED ME to tip, I felt intimidated as they all stood around me and stared as the front desk stated it was a $14 minimum and pointed to the sign that said "tip is voluntary" with the tip amounts. I have been going to PT since my hip replacement in May. My physical therapist is working me hard and my muscles ache everywhere. Massage Ultra is the answer to those aching, tight muscles! I was not allowed to book again bc there was a note put in system that I don't tip enough. I always give 20% on the price listed for massage but they want 40%. They banned me and said I could not book appointment. Go elsewhere bc you will be harassed if you don't give 40% tip (the women who work there will actually yell at you and become aggressive if you don't tip 40%, completely unprofessional!) and then you will be banned. I've been to many affordable massage places and none of them left me feeling so uncomfortable. The woman tried hard but she just didn't have the proper training. I like deep pressure but hers was mostly hard pinching and elbowing my back. I woke up in pain (bruising type of pain) today. Was excited to find a new massage place close to home but don't think I'll be coming back. Ps. Others are right, the way they handle tipping is distasteful. This place is amazing and Jessica was super! During COVID-19 time, they have streamlined their process and has everything ready before my arrival. I arrived their place early and they started early- I was glad! They do comply with Covid-19 safety guidelines-- there were temperature checks, hand sanitizer, and mask-on during massage. As for massage experience, Jessica is indeed amazing! She is a good listener and takes care of your requests. It was such a relaxing experience!
