Delicious and authentic but they get your order wrong every time, I've been here multiple time because my husband is obsessed and the food is good but they get my order wrong everyone time. I will not complain about about the taste but it leaves an empty feeling knowing you are stuck eating something you did not order. And your stuck eating it because the employees don't care, they will fight it to the end. Ugh. I hope I never have to come here again. My husband will order bistek and happily eat tripas because he would r complain. I on the other hand feel like I should receive what I paid for, now what they choose for me to eat!!! This is by far my favorite Taco stand in Austin, and soon will be yours too if you dig authentic tacos. I have been here several times and continue to be impressed. After trying other taco stands I'm constantly reminded why I love this place so much. I have tried several things and anything I get is pretty much always delicious. My favorite thing would have to be hands down the barbacoa torta it's so flavorful, seasoned and cooked just right. The line can get to be pretty long especially on the weekends, so be prepared to wait a little bit but I promise it's well worth the wait. They open at 7 am for all the early birds and stay open until 3 am for all you night owls. This is definitely a place you should stop by at least once! read more

Love this place. I go here if I Taqueria Montenegro is closed. My Spanish is limited, but the ladies at the counter speak good enough English that my order comes out right. I like their fajita and pastor tacos. My boyfriend likes the barbacoa and says the lengua is good. The tacos are made to order and super fresh. I like their red salsa. I haven't tried the green, so I can't speak to that. They have a self-serve jar of pickled vegetables on the counter, but I've been too chicken to try them. I've never been able to catch them open to try their breakfast tacos. They must only serve them on weekends or open later than usual on weekdays. Prices are better than reasonable, but they only accept cash. I can feed the family for $12. It can get crowded, especially on Friday nights, so be patient. It's worth the wait. read more

So my review is for the Matamoros inside the Metro Star Mart. I ordered breakfast tacos for my family. Lets just say nobody liked them, my kids were not happy with their tacos. First off, the flour tortillas were hard, I had to tear off all the ends of the tortillas. Also they forgot to add potato to 12 of my 16 tacos. Lastly we love our salsa with our tacos, that's one of the things we look for in a taco joint. Well, the green salsa was just ok, but the red salsa (which by the way we all fight over when its good) nobody touched, we all agreed that it was not good. read more

Located adjacent to a convenience store, this small dirty gem is rockin'! Go in the store, buy your drink (not alcohol though [they won't allow]) and enter through the door less entry into the small tacoria. It has maybe four tables along the wall and five bar stools. It is dirty. It is filthy. This is expected at joints like this, so, won't hold that against them. They do try to keep it clean. When customers leave they skirmish to the area, remove the trash, and give the area a couple swipes with a rag. Hmmm, well, you know, how many bathroom door handles have you grabbed bare handed from inside the bathroom. Moving on. Their menu is all Espanol except the breakfast taco's. Not a problemo as I can pick out certain words and make it work for me. My biggest challenge was delivering my order to the senora. I had trouble explaining uno picadillo taco as opposed to the platillo. Love my spanglish? We made it happen. She was a sweetheart. Got my taco, dumped some green salsa on it, squeezed my fresh lime slice all over it and chowed down!! Wow! Wow! Wow! I gotta say that taco ranked up there with the best of them! The flour tortilla was nice and thin and crisply grilled. The picadillo was not over greased, nor did it have too much potato, only a couple of cubes. The tomato, lettuce and onion were perfect flavor additions. That green salsa was a definite ass burn! I will come back here. I saw some plates coming out of the window that were looking pretty freaking good. I love little jewels like this. These kinds of places are usually where you find your best food. Best authentic tortas in Austin. The meat is good quality is consistent. It is hard to find authentic Mexican food lIke this in town.

It was 99 degrees outside and I was walking on the side of the road, tired and hungry. This taco stand was in the parking lot of a gas station, and I thought to myself "sure, why not?" The woman working there didn't speak much English, but we worked out that I wanted something with Carnitas. She made sure I was okay with grilled onions and cilantro, and the taco was ready after just a few minutes. It was DELICIOUS. There were a few more grilled onions than I needed for the taco, but they were so delicious that I just ate the leftover ones on their own afterwards. The seasonings were perfect, and I washed it all down with a jarritos soda. The total came to $3.25, which is about as good as it gets for delicious food like that. Keep your eyes peeled when you're looking for this place or you'll miss it, like I said, it's a food cart in the parking lot of a gas station. read more

You know a place is authentic when the menu is written only in Spanish but you can recognize some basic gringo terms like gorditas, tacos, tortas, etc. It's a small trailer in the parking lot of the Conoco station so have your hawk eyes on or you'll miss it. I opted for the gorditas and thought I was in the clear by asking for pork. "Do you want carnitas, pastor, (many other options)". Ummmm........surprise me! The shells were light, and while tasty, did not hold together long enough to finish the meal, instead ending up more as a torta or small resemblance of nachos. My companion had the special which was a beef taco made in your preference of style. Dirt cheap ($1.75 per taco special, $3.50 per gordita, a small selection of drinks, two tables only so grab a bag of food and pop over to Walnut Creek for a picnic. read more

El especial is superb. It's steak, grilled onions, avocado and cheese. I like the salsa verde quite a bit more than the red. Seriously guys, this is one of the best taco spots in Austin and I'm happy that a cab driver told me about it. I haven't tried everything, but their bistek, carnitas, and especial tacos are all fantastic. All the meats are flavorful, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The tortillas are fresh. Not sure if they make them in house (anyone know for sure?), but if not, they get them fresh from a better-than-average supplier. I prefer their salsa roja to the verde, but both are good. My only criticism is that their pastor is ok, but not great. They definitely don't make it on a spit, and it's missing some of the smoky-fruity thing that makes a great pastor. We go there all the time however, like the last time my boyfriend went on a Sunday she lied and said they didn't have any beef. I sent him back and said go get chicken then. In the parking lot of a Conoco sits a taco truck that brings forth EXCELLENT street tacos. Barbacoa and El Especial were both delicious. I added avacado and salsa verde and was very very pleased. I took them to go and the pregnant woman in my office homed in on me said my food smelled incredible and where could she get some. Super fresh ingredients, delicious warm corn tortillas and very tasty and tender meat. And the service was fast and friendly, with a smile. read more
