The first half of the summer was spent attending the Shorehaven Beach club, a Bronx beach club for lower middle class families like ours. It was a great outlet for me. I made lots of friends outside of my normal circle and enjoyed so many incredible activities like paddle ball and swimming and got to see incredible entertainment like Steve Lawrence and Eddie Gorme. I knew I would be leaving for Israel the end of July in 1969 and so I spent the first part of the month going on a diet. Things were very different those days. We had no concepts of fats and proteins and carbs and how it all works. Those days, everybody advised you if you wanted to lose weight, that you should either eat a can of tuna fish drained with nothing else or cottage cheese with cantaloupe. I could not bring myself to eat that can of tuna so I literally lived on cantaloupe and cottage cheese for a month. I lost weight but I could not stand to see either of those foods for quite some time. The second half of the summer I spent working on kibbutz Ginegar in Northern Israel. I had all kinds of jobs from feeding cows and chickens to picking fruit to cleaning pots in the dining room. When work was done and dinner was finished, the favorite activity for all of us young people would be to get together around the fire and eat watermelon. Sometimes we would sneak down to the community kitchen and steal one. We had so much fun singing songs and laughing and eating watermelon. That was the summer of 69! Well, I'm here to tell you in the summer of 2023 that there is no fruit stand that compares to Angie's Fresh Produce on Long Beach Road in Southport. I have stopped their intermittently over the last few years and have always loved how delicious their fruits are. I have not yet tried any of their vegetables or other offerings, but I have a feeling they are fantastic as well On my way to the beach the other day, watermelon was on my mind and so I stopped by Angie's. I always ask one of the women there to help me. They know exactly what to look for to pick me out a good one. Then I noticed there were these huge beautiful looking cantaloupes selling for $3 a piece. I told the woman to pick me out one of those as well. I came home, chilled both of them, put them on the cutting board and cut a piece and I absolutely died. They were so freaking delicious and so sweet and so perfect I could not believe it! OMG! SO DELICIOUS!!!!! For the last 2 days I have been chipping away at that cantaloupe and watermelon, never getting tired of its freshness and incredible taste. I'm heading back to Greensboro tomorrow and kind of excited that I have half of each yet to enjoy. My trainer, DeMarcus loves watermelon and cantaloupe and so I'm going to give him a slice tomorrow morning during our workout session. Maybe he won't be so hard on me! lol The rest I'm going to devour all by myself! The next time you are in the Southport /Oak Island area, you must must stop by Angie's Fresh Produce on Long Beach Road. Make sure you get one of the ladies there to help you. You'll find something for sure by one if the artisans. I found a wonderful kind woman selling handmade soaps and candles. I bought about 4-5 of them and they smell so wonderful. The river walk is beautiful in general but having a small marker to browse every now and then it's a nice perk. I wish there were more produce related vendors but I'll say that it was this market that introduced me to several other small businesses in the area which I now return to for various things I need.

The kids were excited to buy pretzels and smoothies. I haven't seen my friend for 10 years, so I was too busy catching up with her to take pictures LOL. I saw a couple of vendors selling pet related goods like dog snacks and neckwear. Dogs are allowed at this market and we saw at least 2 dogs at any given time. All of them well-handled by their owners. Saw the usual farmers market items like strawberries, blueberries, sweet potatoes, lettuce, and other produce. There were also a few stands selling cut flowers and/or live plants. I took a picture of some pepper plants that someone was selling bc they are so colorful! My favorite stand was Orchidscapes. The owner showed us several species of orchids that smelled like different things - one raspberry, another like root beer, and my favorite- the one that smelled like chocolate. I eventually bought one of the latter. He gave me a card sheet and his card in case I have questions when I get him (I named my plant Charlie) home. I would definitely come here again if I was in the area. There is garage parking available as well as street parking. Bring cash, as the vendors that we purchased from did not accept credit cards. I knocked it down a star for this reason.

I've driven by this spot quite a few times over the past year and decided to stop by with some friends who came to spend 4th of July with us at Holden Beach. It will now be one of my favorite places to go when making a trip to the beach! Their heirloom tomatoes and delicious peaches from SC were incredibly juicy and sweet! The carton of blueberries are probably the sweetest I've ever tasted! They have a refrigerator stocked with containers of pimento cheese, frozen pies, local made sausages and cheeses. I also noticed that they sell bags of my favorite Amish popcorn kernels! Everyone was incredibly friendly. I will definitely be back!

The makeup is probably fifty percent fruit, vegetable and meat vendors and fifty percent arts and crafts sales. There were actually quite a few vendor tents set up for such a small community. Basically held in the Oak Island Soccer Field near the beach (49th street behind Town Hall) with tents set up around the periphery. No real assigned parking - just park where you can on the street around the market. Great place to pick up some locally grown produce, especially if you're there renting a beach house for the week!

They have home brewed beer (and lots of craft selections) fresh baked cakes and pastries (including gluten free), sandwiches, salads, ice cream and a super quaint gift store. We sat in the luncheon area inside, but there were picnic tables outside as well. We missed the bluegrass festival but if we can we'd love to make the Octoberfest. I highly recommend this place for those looking for a farm to table meal, good beer, or tasteful country store excursion.

The locals are really happy they opened here as now they can get fresh produce and all the other goodies close by. There's a little secret in the freezer called white pimento cheese that they carry. This goes with anything you want. I think it's the best pimento cheese I've ever tried. They carry bread, popcorn etc. the produce is fresh, and tastes just like it was picked from the farm that day. This location is convenient. It's easy to find and plenty of parking out front. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I love all the unique, handmade gift ideas for sale too.
