As a parent of a child who fell behind in reading, I was desperate for help. I myself am not a…read moreteacher. This is why I reached out to Sylvan for help. They evaluated my son's reading skills and made a plan for him to get caught up. By paying for a bulk package of hours I was able to save a bit of money. My elementary school aged son has struggled with writing for years. He has a good understanding of…read morewriting concepts and grammar but gets easily overwhelmed when it comes to putting his thoughts on paper. He's starting middle school next year and my wife and I had hoped that Sylvan would be able to help him gain more confidence and work through some of the mental blocks he has when tackling writing assignments. When we signed him up for classes at Sylvan, we expected that he would receive tailored, individualized tutoring to reinforce the concepts he already knows, help build his confidence, and provide techniques and strategies for not worrying about getting it perfect the first time. Unfortunately, the lessons ended up being very boilerplate with minimal customization. The majority of each lesson was spent rehashing grammar concepts he largely already knows, and typically would only spend a few minutes on the creative process of writing. There was also significantly less one-on-one time than we expected, and he spent the majority of the time working on his own on a tablet. We hoped to discuss our concerns during our monthly meeting with the center director, but unfortunately the meetings ended up getting canceled at the last minute three times in a row so we finally just decided to pull him out at the end of the month. The staff are very nice but it certainly wasn't worth the very high cost, and I wouldn't recommend Sylvan for anyone in a similar situation to ours. Maybe it's better for older students or for students who need help with more defined, linear concepts like math or science.
