The owner/barber was rude and weird too. I wouldn't recommend. Our boys walked out with bald spots around their forehead.

I discovered that after living in Cortez for 4 months, finding a good haircut was not easy. Then one day, a block off the main street in town, I drove by Matthew's place, and walked inside. He was professional, polite, engaging, and best of all, a damn good barber. He also has great business hours, something I found to be elusive for the rest of the hair cutters in Cortez. Admittedly his prices are a little higher than the other barbers in town, but quality, and availability come with a cost I was willing to pay. And ladies, he also cuts a lot of women's hair. I've used Yelp for many years all over the place, but never considered myself a "reviewer" .. until now. As a certified creature of habit, I've been to this place several times since stumbling upon it after the pandemic let up. The haircuts I've gotten have been okay. I gave up on getting what I really want when I left the city & moved back to the west slope. It's always a little weird walking in here -- always a little standoffish, nevermind that you're scheduled in on his handwritten list. Last evening was no different. He looked at me seemingly confused as to why I'd set foot in his shop. "Who are you?" After stating my name & scheduled time, he directed me to sit in the chair, & as I did, we started as always, "so, what are we doing today?" I began explaining in simple terms what I was looking for, using my hand to point out a weird cowlick that barbers always seem to mess up. As I was doing so, Matthew swatted at my hand with a comb several times -- like literally hitting my hand with his comb -- & barked "Move your hand". I replied, "I wasn't finished explaining yet." He came back with an unmistakable sarcastic & threatening tone, "Do you want a haircut, bro?? You've been in here before, I know what I'm doing!". I should've stood up & walked right there, but too shocked, I just sat there while dude aggressively combed & chopped. Using the blow-dryer, which is normal, he got rid of loose hair, but would blow directly into my eyes & face at close range, which is not normal. Whether that was intentional or out of spite or not, I'll never know. I caught myself scowling at the whole experience, heart racing, while still in the chair & had to talk myself down. When he was finished, I didn't bother asking him to clean anything else up because clearly it's about what he wants to do, not what you want. I paid, forgetting to tip, & vowed to never sit my ass in that chair again. read more

I downloaded yelp just so I could review this specific barber. I came in originally to get just a short trim, letting Matt know my specifications for the sides and back. I mentioned that I wanted to wait to let him know how much I wanted off the bangs once we got to that point. I sat down in his barber chair, which he faced away from the mirrors (which I don't see the point of having mirrors on the wall if you're not going to face the customer towards them. Matt acted in a way that I perceived as narcissistic, mentioning how he knows what he is doing and cuts 125 heads a week, 5000 a year. He cut my hair, blatantly missing my instructions about waiting to cut the bangs till we got to that point. I walked out with a haircut that is the shortest I have ever gotten in my life, no exaggeration. He chopped off over half of my length when I mentioned I wanted a small trim (and I could've let him know too if I had been facing the mirrors). Overall, this was a lackluster experience and I will never recommend his services due to the simple fact that he didn't put the customer first. I have always had a dedicated barber and always give them a few chances, however, that's because every barber I've been to has always listened to the customer. With Matt, I can say that I am never going to give him another chance. He is a good guy with good intentions, just lacking the skill and ability to listen to the customer. read more

I worked in Cortez the summer of 2017. I've always preferred men to cut my hairs and was thrilled to find Matthew. Excellent prices, former military person himself who gives military discount, great work ethics, and great stylist too. while there I Met folks who drove weekly or so from Durango (45 miles) for cuts. Great haircut from Matthew, great haircut experience. Came in on a Wednesday afternoon without an appointment, was able to fit me in about an hour or so later, plenty of time to go grocery shopping. Will be back, would recommend Matthew to anyone. read more
