Finally a vegetarian breakfast spots! Ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes Grits with the pepper jelly on the side. The Fried Green Tomatoes were crunchy and fresh. The grits were both cheesy and peppery with a creamy finish. The texture of the grits were t thicker ground of the grits so the mouth feel was like a farm to table sensation of grits from scratch. The mocktails were excellent and made custom to order. Bonus they have Peach juice! Service was customer service excellency! The ambiance of the restaurant itself is very posh and modern. I ordered the meat lovers bowl and was very disappointed. Let me start out by saying the service was very good. Friendly and attentive. Now on to the bad. The home fries seamed like they were sitting in a warmer for hours. They were cold and very soft. The sausage was spicy which I do not mind, however, it would have been good to know since I was not looking for a spicy breakfast. The coffee was very bitter and difficult to drink. Finally the price is outrageous. $16 for the bowl! I've had better breakfast at the Waffle House for half the price. This place was amazing when it first opened but has declined greatly. What a great find in Greenville! We ordered the Cowboy Bene and the Jazzy Omelet, and both were excellent. The Cowboy Bene had perfectly poached eggs and the hollandaise sauce was absolutely delicious, rich but not overpowering. The Jazzy Omelet was also great. We asked for the gravy on the side since we're usually not huge gravy people... but honestly, after tasting it, we probably could have had it right on top! The best way I can describe Maverick is that it's like if Biscuit Head and Maple Street Biscuit Company had a baby and if you know those places, you know that's a high compliment. They also have a really cool jam and butter bar, which was a fun touch and gave us a chance to try a few different flavors with the biscuits. From the outside it's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall spot, and you could honestly drive right past it without realizing what you're missing. But in my experience, those are often the best places--and this one definitely proves that point. The staff was friendly, the service was prompt, and the whole experience felt relaxed and welcoming. We came as a big party of 22 for family brunch and we had an incredible brunch! They were great at accommodating us so that we could sit together and enjoy each others company and the food was spectacular! The biscuits are the most softest buttery biscuits you'll ever eat! They can be a bit dry but not in a bad way, just more like flakey. We are from FL so we aren't local but we will for sure return when we come back to SC! read more

I had heard good things, so here we were on a quiet Friday morning. We were expecting counter service, but walked in to see a hostess stand...without a hostess. We started to seat ourselves, then a young man approached and grabbed menus and showed us to a booth. The menu is huge and has a lot of what looked like tasty choices. Hub and I both decided on the biscuits and sausage gravy, and I added a scrambled egg. There were a few other people in the restaurant that had been there longer and had just received their meals so we were prepared to wait, but the server returned quickly with our food (red flag). The gravy wasn't sawmill gravy or what looked like typical sausage gravy, but a brownish mixture with cut up pieces of sausage dropped in. I dipped in my finger, and I couldn't quite place the flavor. (After reading another recent review, evidently the flavor was cheese. The menu states sawmill gravy, which, by the way, has no cheese). I could not eat this, so I thought I would try to save the biscuit at least and eat it with the egg. I also went to their jam bar for some blueberry jam. But the biscuit was not good either, with a bread-like texture, and the corners (it was square) were hard. Oh well. There's lots of other breakfast places around that would be a better choice. This is one of the few places (other than fast food) in Mauldin for breakfast. There's a huge selection of breakfast sandwiches. You order at the counter, serve yourself drinks and grab a seat in the dining room. We had the Hangover- a fried chicken biscuit with egg, jalapeño and gravy- and an omelet. Both were delicious. Unbelievable. Furthest thing from IHOP you could imagine. Really. I had a French toast battered biscuit (heart surgery scheduled for 4:30). Wifey had biscuits and gravy with chicken (don't order the sausage gravy unless you like cheese sauce). The menu is very original and creative and the food is hand-made. Chicken is awesome, biscuits are great. And they have a butter bar (real butter!) / jam bar / syrup bar that is all original, hand made, creative and ... delicious! Good to see somebody willing to take risks and create a non-prototype meal and menu. I'm sure not every item will satisfy every taste but tough beans. read more

Have visited this place twice and always has been excellent - service, food, decor. Today I got the "bene" and the fact that the hollidaise sauce had Meyer lemon in it, really elevated the dish. Everything seems like it would be so heavy. But they add a great balance of flavors and freshness and that lets you enjoy the whole dish stay to finish. Well, this was an interesting experience. Upon entering its appearance is almost exactly the same as the previous business, Luna Rosa, and there is nothing wrong with that but I was expecting something different. As you walk through the entrance towards the register to order, you will notice a huge menu to your left with multiple items listed. There are not many options for vegetarian's, and I had to ask if I could have a biscuit with egg and cheese, as that is not listed as an option. The young lady at the register was extremely friendly and helpful. If you have never been to this location, it is very much self-service, which is not a problem, but the flow of how they have things set up just doesn't feel right in my opinion. I ordered a coffee, biscuit with egg and cheese, and home fries... all were delicious. I truly hope this establishment finds its groove and becomes a staple within Mauldin. The food was delicious and the employee taking my order was very friendly and helpful. I believe some of the other employees may need coaching. Pros: Delicious food Cons: Not a good flow for ordering, getting your coffee, and then back to your seat, and the jelly station off in the dark corner. New, second, location of this restaurant has opened and we visited during lunch. I had heard about this in the Upstate Business Journal and on a local social media site. This is a casual restaurant with an open seating area, including some outdoor seating. Also they have applied for a liquor license. Which makes it interesting. Casual, open, several televisions and a planned full bar makes one think "sports bar." But here, they make scratch made biscuits every day and the goal is to serve them as "heaping comfort food." So they are loaded. An example is the "Maverick Biscuit Sandwich": Tillamook sharp cheddar, scrambled egg and choice of fried chicken, bacon, ham, sausage or fried bologna. Or the "Whistle Stop BLT Biscuit": Buttermilk biscuit, fried green tomatoes, house made pimento cheese, bacon, artisan greens and lemon vinaigrette. We both had the "Hangover": Buttermilk biscuit, fried chicken, bacon, scrambled eggs* and candied jalapeños, topped with homemade gravy. Which is $13.00. I chose to have the gluten free biscuit option, which is nice that they have it, and no gravy, in an attempt to reduce the gluten. There are other items than biscuits, like fried green tomatoes, burgers, french toast, grits, etc. Definitely a heavy meal place. My egg was overcooked, bacon was tough, not crispy tough, just tough. The chicken was bland and under-seasoned, and a little bit dry - you know that chicken breast dry texture, yeah, that one. Overall, it "could have been better" (2 stars) but since they make a good attempt at gluten free it is upgraded to the 3 star, Okay. I think this has a lot of potential and will find its crowd, but it is in a off beat space. I am not sure if they are shooting for breakfast, brunch and/or lunch as the thing here, or maybe all of the above? I'll be honest, this wasn't my favorite breakfast but the service was great and our server was awesome. I had the one with the jalapeño biscuit and hollandaise with the egg, sorry I can't remember what it was called. The issue I had was the biscuit was dry, seemed like it was a day or two old. Overall the meal was kind of bland, but it was alright. The best part were the potatoes with the bacon and cheese, so good. I don't want to give them anything less than 5 stars, I think you should still go and give them a try and make your own mind up. When we arrived the GM, Lisa went above and beyond to seat us together, even to the lengths of moving booths together so our party wasn't awkwardly separated. We heard good things about this place so we decided to try it. The best things we consumed were the cappuccino and the loaded home fries. I ordered the Maverick biscuit sandwich with bacon. My husband ordered The Bene. He had no complaints. The biscuit was fluffy and tasted great. The egg, cheese and bacon had absolutely no flavor at all. I took the bacon out of the sandwich to taste it separately and no flavor. I've never had bacon with no flavor, nor cheese but all that I could taste was the biscuit. It was also cold when delivered and there were very few people when we came in. Good staff. The chef/cook needs to taste the food. My guess is that my dish may not have been made to order. read more

Renovation Flop! This place was awesome up until the recent renovations. Now there is always a wait to be seated when that was never the case before. Also, they hired a lot of new employees. The original employees are GREAT! The new ones, not so much. Sat for over 10 minutes before being spoken to. Waited 15 for someone to bring the bill at the end. I watched 2 other customers getting very angry because no one was checking up on them. Also some of the new employees will speak a foreign language right in front of you like you don't even exist. Nobody ever likes that. This always makes a person feel that they are talking about you in another language. Whoever came up with the idea to change everything should be fired. The staff here were great but the food was disappointing. We both got a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and I got coffee and a side of grits. Coffee was good. The food came out and it was cool. Lukewarm in places and cool in other spots. The cheese wasn't even melty, just a slice of hard cheddar. The bacon would have been good if it were hot. The biscuit I'm not sure, as the bottom was thin and soggy and the top was thick and a little doughy. It looked like it was a lot of dough they put on a sheet cake and baked and then cut into squares instead of a handmade biscuit I would expect for $8+. The only thing I did really like were the jalapeño cheddar grits, which had an excellent flavor but again could have been warmer. read more

First off I'll say they are very expensive for a restaurant you have to order at the counter. I don't think they're appropriately staffed when we visited. They had one cashier and one cook and a big group came in in front of us about 10 people, and we waited forever in line. my wife ordered the waffles which she said we're extremely good. Two huge waffles came out. They should consider smaller sizes. It was way too much for one person to eat unless you're looking to gain weight. I ordered an omelette with three meats, onions, peppers because I didn't want any carbohydrates. It came out with breaded home fries on the inside which I specifically said I didn't want. it was hard to tell how much meat was really in it because there was chopped up in a tiny, tiny little pieces and the onions and peppers really outweighed any of the meat I could find in it. When the waitress brought her food out, she walked outside with it looking for her number out there I had to flag her down to tell her we were inside again probably just understaffed, but I don't think I'm willing to pay $36 for two breakfast. On top of that you're supposed to give you a cash discount everywhere I go if you use a debit card you get a cash discount apparently not here they added 3% but still took the money out of my account as though it was cash I don't think I'd ever go back. read more
