    San Francisco Reuben
    Tim H.

Remember when this was the place to go. My first visit today was inspired by my sister wanting some cabbage soup. Back in the 90's she ate there every Friday. This particular Wednesday evening seemed off. Soup came out lukewarm warm. Soup should be hot. Server took it back, came out warmer but hardly any cabbage. Took it off my bill. Never heard of a San Francisco Rueben before, so gave it a try. Bottom bread was mush and sandwich fell apart. Needed a better sear. Last few bits the corned beef was tough. I did grab some frozen cabbage soup for my sister. Hopefully it brings her back to Northshore life and good times.

Just an update after 7 years. Still the best house made corned beef in the midwest. Maybe someone in NY would quip but nothing Illinois or Indiana or Wisconsen or Iowa comes close. This is a well oiled machine

My Delicatessen life started in San Francisco on McAllister Street a very long time ago. When you grow up with Jewish Deli's your whole life, you tend to know what's excellent, what's good and what's just "Okay". Excellent would be Katz's Deli or Russ and Daughters in New York or Brent's or Langers in Los Angeles. There is a host of very good deli's that are too many to mention by name. I would put Max and Benny's in the "very good" category for many reasons: First, would be their pricing. What they give you for the price you're paying is fantastic. Second, would be the service. These helpful people working here are incredibly accommodating. Third, would be the food. No bells or whistles going off here. Just down home, real, authentic delicatessen food that is being served. Max and Benny's is huge. There is so much room to move in this immense building, I could only imagine if this place sold out? That would be crazy! I had a very good pastrami on rye with deli mustard (not hot dog mustard). It came with a crisp pickle and a basic cold slaw. I found this dinner to be very good without the "break your bank" prices some Deli's charge. Max and Benny's Deli, way out here in the suburbs of Chicago really worked for me!

Interesting deli. Good sandwich, could have been hotter. Good service, fast and friendly. Decent portion size too. The bowl of soup and half of the sandwich filled me up. I wish that they had a counter to get cookies by the pound, but they didn't.

Old school restaurant and deli with all of the classics -- reubens, hot open faced sandwiches, pastrami -- and most come with coleslaw and a pickle. We were also given a dinner roll with butter. I ordered the San Francisco Reuben which was different in that it had horseradish (no sauerkraut) and Monterey Jack instead of Swiss. It was piled high with corned beef, although a little chewy. It was tasty and I liked the slight changes vs the traditional Reuben. I also enjoyed a potato pancake. My companion had matzo ball soup and a corned beef sandwich. Very pleasant retro setting, popular with the older crowd, and interestingly, we were asked if we were there for the author event (we were not). Nice selections at the deli.

Matzah Matzo Ball Soup with Kreplach. It was suppose to be a starter, but was so great and filling it turned out to be my whole meal

Carrie, who was our main contact, was communicative and responsive! We found Loft 329 after needing to change the venue last minute from my original one. From day one of reaching out, Carrie was quick to respond, she managed to fit my mother in for a quick tour and booking was super easy. She even went out of her way to try to help us find a rental for some tables and chairs. Definitely do not pass this space up if you're looking for an affordable, flexible and gorgeous event space!

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object. The broken pieces are mended together then painted with gold, silver or platinum paint. The result is that the broken piece is now transformed and by highlighting the flaws and accepting the imperfections, this is now a completely different and beautiful object. Our workshop was taught by Takahashi, Mami, a skilled teacher from Tokyo (by Ghibli Museum she told us). All materials were provided, even the broken pottery (an advanced student brought their own broken vase). The upstairs studio was open, well-ventilated and set up with all materials laid out in an orderly fashion. I appreciated the knowledge and experience that our teacher had, as a skilled working apprentice under a Grand kintsugi Master. She walked around, demonstrating and providing hands-on instruction. As a philosophy, kintsugi is similar to wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. Maybe I can incorporate a bit of this practice myself, and accept flaws or imperfections rather than deeming something less than perfect and thus must be discarded. I've taken classes here before and attended gallery showings. This is a close location to downtown HP, has a parking lot and street parking.

I bought a membership for 2 of my kids last August and decided if they came once a month it would be worth the price. After i bought it we went into a gorgeous busy fall and didn't make it back until an especially cold Chicago winter rolled in come January. My 7th grader doesn't seem to have much interest in going and when he does come with friends loses interest pretty fast so i dropped my membership for him and bought an annual membership for my 4th grader which comes with 1 free guest past each month. Today my son had 2 friends over and were getting sick of video games so I suggested we make good use of our annual membership and head here. My son was covered by the annual membership and we used a guest pass for one friend. And then I paid $30 for the other friend. It's hard to find an activity that lasts a few hours for 3 boys for $30 so well it IMO. Plus the cost of dippin dots of course. My son and his friends joined the other 200 kids jumping around this place and I wondered what type of germs they were picking up, but at least it's relatively new (aka: clean) and probably not much worse than what they pick up at school these days. They were also super excited to run into some friends from school to hang out with as well. They did say they like the Vernon Hills location better since it's a little bigger, but there's plenty of fun here and it's location is way more convenient to my house.
