Terrible management and ownership. Very deceptive in their sales tactics. No interest in members after the sale is made

I signed up for the trial online and nobody called me back, so I went down there this morning. Maybe this is why nobody called me back.... They said I'm disqualified from the 7 day trial because I had a membership when they were on Airport Thruway. THAT WAS 12 YEARS AGO! They weren't even called Max Fitness then. Not even in the same location, different name. You'd think they at least let me do the 7 days or maybe even 3 days to see if I want to come to this place on the regular or not. I think that's a bit petty. It was really crowded. Lot of people just standing around looking as opposed to actually working out. I guess it's a beauty contest. LOL Update: I forgot to mention they have a lot of workout equipment compared to other places, but it is really congested in there. Even though my initial experience wasn't great, I'd consider this place as they are open 24 hours several days during the week. That's why I wanted to use the guest pass a few days to see what would be the best time for me to come here, as I mentioned it was super crowded at 5am. I do not like how one of their classes is in the middle of the main area as I feel classes should be in a room, as opposed to having an area roped off. It's already tight in there, let's think. Good quality gym but free weights area is too cramped. Otherwise, I'd rate it higher. I like the 24 hour aspects Monday through Friday. Decent locker room but a bit small. Probably should remove the section in the middle of the gym and that should free up much needed space. read more

I have been a member of max fitness for many years. The members and staff that I see each day are like family; it's always great when someone notices you aren't there - holds me accountable! I was first drawn to this gym because they offer several class options and childcare. Cathy Fuller and her staff are amazing! I wouldn't consider going anywhere else! read more

When I signed the contract I was told that I was only signing papers so that I'm case I want to fully join after the 7 days were up. I only went to the gym 3 times during that 7 days cause I didn't like the atmosphere and was always so crowded. I never received a call or email asking if I was ready to completely join, so I thought I was done with there. I check my bank account and see that they've been charging me for quite sometime. I call the location and speak to the GM, and was pretty much told to deal with it or pay $99 dollars to cancel the membership because apparently if you dont want to be a part of the gym after the 7 days, you have to come in and sign paperwork, which I was not told about. This place gets one star from me for poor customer service, crappy contracts, and misleading customers to benefit themselves read more

For a free gym*, it seems pretty decent to me. Like others reviews have said, it is usually busy. But that's not really the businesses fault. Most the machines are working from what I saw. There's a small section roped off, but I couldn't tell why. Maybe COVID related? My only complaint so far is that the gym is open 24 hours a day on weekdays, but closes at 6 on Saturdays (maybe sundays as well, I forgot to ask). I wish it stayed 24hrs through the weekend as well, it might cut down on the busyness during peak hours. *If you stay at the Holiday Inn Express or Hyatt Place right down the street off Veterans Parkway, you get free gym access. And that's pretty rad. read more

We've had a lovely experience 4 out of 5mos, so kudos to the staff for their customer service, daycare treatment and the overall gym setup (plenty of good equipment, etc). Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between the gym staff and their payroll department. Specifically, when we proceeded with the online cancellation process one month before our military move. After calling the person responsible for the cancellation of the contract, we were assured that everything would be cancelled on time and we could continue using the gym until our departure date. Unfortunately, this either wasn't processed properly or was never communicated to the gym staff and as a result we've been stopped on multiple occasions at the front desk saying that we no longer have access. I recommend fixing the communication issue between payroll and the gym staff which, based on previous reviews, has been a reason for gym's overall low ranking. Thank you. read more

I was staying at the Residence Inn about a mile and a half away from this property. The hotel fitness center smelled like mold and for that reason, they told me I could present my hotel key and use this gym at no cost. After taking a look at the fitness center on my hotel property, there was no question that I would be using Max Fitness. I headed there around 8 AM on a Thursday morning. I was greeted by a helpful young woman named Kalin. She helped answer a few questions for me knowing that it was my first time here. She gave me the Wi-Fi password, she told me about the class schedule. I asked her if I needed to be a member in order to take the classes, she said it wouldn't be a big deal if I wanted to pop in. She also let me know that one had just started if I was interested. She let me know where the locker room was, and told me if I needed anything that she would be here. Lovely service, lovely girl. Parking was very easy to find as the lot is pretty huge, however the place is also very busy. I liked that it was more than just a gym, but a community. There were a few classes going on at once and the music was blasting. Everybody was working together, and the gym was packed for a Thursday morning. I definitely dug the environment. They also have a little juicing and protein shake station, as well as a sauna in the ladies locker room. Bonus points for both of those. The trainers all had whiteboards listing their goals for their clients outside so everyone could see. It was a very motivating feeling being there. I also had a tremendous work out. The hours aren't great. I tried to go Saturday morning and they didn't open until later on. I like to work out usually pretty early and their hours did not match up with my early-morning schedule. Other than that, I highly recommend this fitness center. Some of the equipment is a little bit older, it's not the cleanest place, and definitely not the greatest hours - but aside from all of that I enjoyed myself and I was bummed out I couldn't go back. A decent amount of the equipment is broken just collecting dust. And the ones that aren't broken have broken jagged pieces of plastic sticking out that will slice you and your expensive gym attire. I don't enjoy spending $100+ on lululemon clothes just to have this janky gym's equipment rip holes in it anytime I get on or off a machine without being exceptionally careful. With half the machines down due to Covid and the other half of the remaining to use only half of those are useable machines available that are broken. So 1/4 of the cardio machines are actually able to use but will most likely cut you if you don't pay close attention mounting and dismounting the machines. Super expensive memberships when planet fitness is close by and planet fitness doesn't keep broken machines in their gyms. Certainly not ones you will cut yourself on. read more

I started a gym membership in the summer 2021. Lorn and his wife Cathy persuaded me to add the training. They said I can cancel if I needed too. After the first training session with Joe, our schedules didn't coincide so I called Cathy and asked to cancel. She said she'll talk to Lorn. A few weeks go by and I got a charge of $140. I stopped by to inquire about the charge and Lorn told me that it was out of his hands. He told me to cancel online, which I did. Another 2 weeks went by without a email notification about canceling, and I got another charge. I went by again and he told me all he could do was freeze my account for 4 months, even though I told him I wanted a cancelation. He also said that Joe falsified reports to say i attended training even though i hadn't been there in weeks. Keep in mind, I only attended 1 training session. I tried to call corporate but ended up contacting the another branch in Phoenix city. They informed me that Lorn and Cathy had the power to cancel but chose to lie about it, and steal my hard earned money. Finally I went to my bank to report it, and they retrieved the funds because I screen shot the cancelation in September 2021. Today, 2/24/22, I get an email stating that I owe roughly $900. What a joke. Don't waste your time with these money hungry crooks. There has to be a consumer reporting advocate to report these people too. Liars and thieves! Also, training sucked. I hadn't been to the gym in 5 months prior but Joe felt the need to max me out with weights, causing a shoulder injury. Positive: large, lots of equipment, next to my new place. Negative: $15 charge to try gym out, PACKED!, when I asked about membership packages I was told I can only get that info by talking to the manager, staff couldn't care less that I was checking it out. Overall: A modern fitness gym. This is not your traditional pumping iron gym. I personally won't be back but I'm sure some people love it. The child care is wonderful, and one of the few gyms in Columbus with childcare besides the YMCA. I also love that childcare is available everyday, including Sundays. Staff is very friendly. Facility and bathrooms are always clean. Location is convenient. The only downside is that the weight area (specifically near the squat racks) is very congested. I appreciate them having multiple racks, but during peak hours you feel like you're on top of other people. This is my only con, which seems to be common with most gyms. Would recommend! read more

I Singh up after pay theme in front then after 1 months I did not use my membership because I have a medical problem.. what happened is I don know that you have to send theme a letter to cancel the membership.. now I don't know all about that now months and months they been charging me 100$ of dollars i won't pay for that because I was not using my membership .. they end up forwarding to the collector now they make my score credit fuck up more .... Update on review. Well here we are and these crooks are STILL trying to charge my old credit card even though i jumped through hoops just to let them know to END my membership AFTER MY CONTRACT WAS UP. You get that? Even after your 2 year contract is up, you have to submit a form so they stop charging you AND make a call to them telling them to stop. THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER as of 5 months later in still getting emails saying my card couldn't be charged. BEWARE! Unfortunately, I would give this facility, or what ever it is called now, no stars if possible. I enjoyed Gold's when I joined. What I don't enjoy is being billed long after sending five requests and sets of documents for cancellation... When I was hard sold the membership by Tracy at the actual Golds on Veterans Parkway, I was assured that, because of my possibility of relocation, I could get out of my contract at any time. When I received notification of a transfer home, I quickly posted a letter with details to Tracy. This was July of 2011. I am writing this.... September 27, 2012. Two months passed - no response. Had I not sent enough detail? I followed up "to whom it may concern" this time and included a bank statement with my Savannah address. Fast forward to February of 2012. I send a letter offer detailing my relocation... keep in mind, the gym has been rebranded during this time. The location by my home in Columbus did not even exist... So many wrongs here. Let's move to this summer... I call and speak to a nice enough customer service rep, a young girl. She acknowledges several irate e-mails I've sent in response to their annoying and highly unprofessional (not notated by the gym at all) email blasts. She told me to fax a utility bill. I did.. nothing. So this week, I respond to another e-mail. These e-mails at from a woman called Cathy Phillips. To say the customer service standard is lacking is a grave understatement. She had the nerve to forward me an e-mail response that she created to my previous e-mail. I searched my inbox via outlook - no response had been received in the past. Fair enough, right? She listed some but not all details, trying to snake around PAST documents. Why? They don't want to refund the money they have been stealing for over a year. RIP OFF REPORT... So I respond again. I've asked simply enough for what details are needed to update this account retroactively. Why? I've done my due dilligence. I've sent what they have requested numerous times... and nothing. This woman has still not responded to my request. Yet again. I will blast every social media outlet I can find. DO NOT JOIN MAX FITNESS... I cannot imagine how horrid this would be for service members, people who are far more likely to be moved than I. Stay away. Stay far away! These people are crooks. They lie and steal and pretend to not get what documents they have received. Why? 30 bucks a month... pathetic! read more

If there was an option to less than 1 star, I would most definitely give it to this place. First off, we are a military family and we have had nothing but issues with them since the day we opened the most atrocious contract known to man with them. Their billing makes no sense as we move and they keep charging our account so we had to dispute the transactions coming from them. The contract says "Military families get out of the contract with proof of a military move" and now we get a letter in the mail saying 1300$ is being sent to collections... The only quality athletic club in the area. Reading others reviews is eye opening. My experience wasn't spectacular or bad until I had an unintentional altercation with an elderly personal trainer. I missed reading a sign that stated I couldn't use certain equipment unless a class was out of session. When I grabbed a floor mat, this older woman came at me, blocked me, grabbed the mat out of my hands and said I couldn't have it. I have no problem with the rules, but I do have a problem with unprofessional staff and their behavior. When I addressed her and stated I wasn't aware, she argued me back saying read the sign. Don't be fooled! The gym is fine, not super clean and the staff is hit or miss, but they have lots of different equipment and nice classes. But DON'T BE FOOLED! My husband and I were promised a hassle-free cancellation because we are military. NOT TRUE. We EACH have to pay an extra month because when we went to cancel today for our PCS next week, they gave us a form that we have to mail (certified, which costs extra on top of everything) and said it takes 30 days! We were told to "just come on in when you're ready to cancel" and that was NOT true. This place is now a Max Fitness location. Cmon Yelp staff get it together. This is a better gym for Columbus, a lot of classes, and decent equipment. I've been going here for over a year now, and have told the staff several times the speaker system is blown and needs to be fixed. I am greeted with blank stares, and no help. You may ask, why would I still come here if the speakers give me a headache unless I drown their horrible tinny sound out with my headphones? Well, simple, because they have no cancellation policy for their contracts. So whether I'm here or not, I have to pay until it's up, so I strap on my noise canceling Bose headphones, keep my mouth shut, and get my work out in. So there you go; don't sign up for a contract unless you don't plan on canceling, and invest in some decent headphones, and you'll love this gym. read more

Why do people join the gym? Most will say because they want to get in better shape. Max Fitness Elite has something for just about everyone to accomplish that goal. You can find all the free weights you could want and many various machines to suit your lifting needs. Not into that? Well they also provide A LOT of group fitness classes throughout the day. Oh you just want to plug in your headphones and do cardio? Well it's your lucky day because this gym is packed with a variety of cardio machines! There are also lots of TVs where I can watch all my Saturday and Sunday football games while I sweat like a pig. Lastly, like most gyms, social hour is 5-7pm Mon-Thurs. So unless you like fighting the crowds to get your lift on, avoid this time. read more

I have been a member of Max for about 3 years. The last two years I have been doing Push with Cathy. This class has been a game changer for me. Everyday Cathy motivates and encourages not just the people in her class but everyone in the gym. They have been making a lot of changes and improvements to the equipment recently that will offer so may more options for people to reach their goals. They have a daycare which is so helpful in continuing to come to the gym even on days that kids are not in school. read more

This gym has the absolute WORST customer service I have ever experienced in my entire life. Do NOT join here. Even after meeting all the cancellation requirements, they would NOT stop charging my credit card. Finally cancelled the card in order to stop being charged. This is a nice gym, a little loud and a number of their machines need some work but the price is right and they have plenty of equipment. The staff is friendly and there are trainers available for a price. If you're knowledgeable about your workout needs this is a fairly low cost option. read more

SHADY PRACTICES!!! Do not join this gym. I had signed up for personal training. I quickly realized what a rip off it had been. The personal trainer only makes 12 dollars out of the 45 you pay per session, and they are the ones who make up the workout plan/teach you the exercises. The fact it was a binding contract was never disclosed. When I asked how I cancelled I was harassed every single time I went in by the manager. Saying 'are you sure' ' I don't think your sure' Then he uncomfortable cornered me into having to meet with another personal trainer. My husband and I filled out a request to cancel four times. It was denied the first three then finally the fourth was accepted. They said 'we don't cancel due to financial or health reasons'. They also claimed to have sent me emails saying they needed the cancellation request in writing. I went through my entire email and only had promotional emails. They continued to charge in the midst of our dispute. Some of the equipment on the machines is frayed and everything is way too close together. When I went to Auburn University (3 years ago), my parents got me a membership to the branch in Auburn. I graduated last year, and they refused to close out my membership even though I was leaving the state to go to Columbus, GA. When told that we were military, they still refused to cancel my membership (even though it claims that they will work with military families). They said they will only transfer my account if I wouldn't pay the charge to cancel the membership. Max Fitness would not allow me to cancel my membership, and now my contract has run up and yet they still keep charging me even though I haven't been to the gym in 5 months. Sequence Fitness (PC Beach Fitness, LLC dba Sequence Fitness) is suing me and another employee to keep us from working at any other local gym. I was the General Manager for 3 months before I left Sequence Fitness because I believed their business practices were deceptive, dishonest, illegal, and unethical and I could not participate in such an enterprise. Now they are trying to make sure I and another employee can't work anywhere else. In order to prove my case, I am seeking information from people who believe they were misled into long term contracts when they thought they were getting a day, week or month pass or a month-to month membership or if you believe a fake credit card was place on file for a membership. Also if you thought or were told you were signing a waiver but found out later it was a contract for a year membership and if you believed you were placed into a 3rd party collection agency from these practices. If you had cancelled your membership but continued to get billed. THIS WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTIONTION, I HAD FORGOT ABOUT THIS....I BELIEVE THAT SOMETIME IN 2015 SEQUENCE FITNESS SAID THEY WOULD BE GETTING CHILDCARE SOON, NO LATER THAN OCTOBER. SEVERAL MEMBERS SIGNED UP FOR THIS, WITH THE BELIEF IT WOULD BE HAPPENING IN 2015. APRIL OF 2016 THEY OPEN CHILDCARE. ALMOST A YEAR AFTER MEMBERS JOINED FOR THE CHILDCARE. IF YOU SIGNED UP AND WAS PROMISED CHILDCARE LAST YEAR AND THEY DID NOT RELEASE YOU AFTER MONTH AND MONTHS OF NO CHILDCARE AND YOU WANTING TO CANCEL BECAUSE THEY DID NOT PROVIDE THAT SEVICE YOU NEEDED.
