The food was excellent! A small wait to get in on a Friday. Employees are so friendly. Menu has some good selections with burgers and entrees. Drink menu with drinks running around $15 a piece.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff is friendly and attentive, and the menu has solid options that are consistently well-prepared. Portions are generous and everything tastes fresh. Maxwell's Tavern is a reliable spot for a casual meal or drinks with friends. Would definitely recommend.

Why does Maxwell's seemingly always have a wait list? [[HIGHLIGHT]]Because their food, waitstaff & historic but noisy ambiance makes for the perfect Tavern.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]And in good weather they have a patio outback![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our favorites include the Wednesday/Friday Fish & Chips with that tiny scoop of killer Cole slaw - add a "seasonal" salad and Life is Good. Our server Mary Rose was a delight as is the rest of the staff. Other great dishes - Potato Skins, Onion Rings, any Burger, Pork Chops & simply great Sandwiches. Go early or you too will be back to stand in line...

Comfortable atmosphere, attentive waitress. Went here for lunch. I had the Tavern salad with blackened salmon, my dining mate had a cheeseburger with French fries. There was a 40 cents extra charge for a request for another little container of salad dressing which the waitress notified me about. My dining mate enjoyed his Tavern burger with fries Prices on paar with local restaurants. Food plated nicely, good portions. We would return again

Came in for dinner with my family and we were hungry and ready to eat something good. Walked in and we were greeted by the hostess at the front. Asked how many in our party and we were seated right away, yay. Sat a spacious corner booth and proceeded to look over the menu. The ambiance was relaxed and very festive. Our server came over and took our drink order. Drinks were brought over and asked if we were ready to order. We said we needed a few minutes and our server said ok and quickly walked away. It seamed he was a bit short with us and I took it as a, whatever. He returned and took our order. We had questions on menu items and I would have preferred a bit more detail on menu items. APPETIZERS Fried Pickles $11.50 A Southern favorite, breaded and deep- fried pickle chips served with ranch dressing. Loved these perfectly fried pickles. They were prepared perfectly with a crunchy texture and the sauce completely added some extra flavor. I would order them again. Good choice and a great starter. Potato Skins $12.95 Twice baked potato skins, loaded with cheddar jack cheese, bacon, and green onions, serve with sour cream. I liked that they were not just the skins but had actual potato. They were sliced in half, but not hollowed out completely. There were still lots of potato left and then all the ingredients loaded on top making it a good potato skin. FOOD Ribeye $34.95 12 oz.certified Angus beef ribeye, char-grilled to temperature and served with a tavern house side salad and a choice of one side item. Cooked perfectly and not dry, good flavor. Flank Steak $23.95 Marinated flank steak strip, Char-grilled to temperature and served with a tavern house side salad and a choice of one side item. Cooked perfectly, flavorful and juicy Spaghetti and meat sauce $14.50 Our homemade, slow-cooked meat sauce served over a generous amount of spaghetti served with a tavern house side salad and garlic bread Salad was a good size and vegetables were fresh. Spaghetti was a bit on the bland side. Added lots of black pepper and crushed pepper to add some flavor, it was better. Add we were getting ready to leave and boxing up our leftovers we put the salads in one bowl and noticed a stowaway in our salad. Employee noticed us looking at the little critter and asked if everything was okay. We let her know there was a bug in our salad and she seamed indifferent and began explaining how they have no control over situations like this. My thought was are you kidding me, I expected a different response. She did bring us a new salad, however, it's not what we wanted. We just wanted her to hear us out and acknowledge the bug in our food that we were eating earlier and could have eaten. So frustrating. Service needs to be improve. Subtracting 1 star for the bug in my salad Subtracting 1 star for poor customer service

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Our first time at Maxwell's was iconic--power outage everywhere else, everyone piled in because they still had electricity, great energy, great vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That was also when I had my first Mediterranean mule, which was genuinely excellent. Sadly, the food on our most recent visit did not understand the assignment. The fried pickles were aggressively salty--like, you get six or seven in and your mouth starts filing a complaint. I was hyped for the collards because the texture was actually great, but they were shockingly sweet. Not "hint of sweetness," but "why do these taste like dessert" sweet. Same story with the coleslaw: very finely chopped cabbage and way too much sugar. Our waiter was super nice, and I wasn't even trying to get replacement food--just wanted to pass along feedback. He did offer to swap it out but mentioned the collards are a family recipe, so... sounds like this is very much on purpose. Overall, Maxwell's clearly commits hard to salty‑sweet flavors. If that's your thing, you'll probably be happy. If not, come for the drinks and vibe and maybe lower expectations on the food.

Been there many times I. Wife and I arrived early to make sure we could get a comfy table since I am recovering from back surgery. Hostess would not seat us until my sister and Mom arrived.Never heard of this before but whatever. Always loved this place because the food was good and reasonably priced. Not happy with the increasing menu prices. Paid $11 dollars for a plate of 9 onion rings. Frozen from an bag. Not freshly battered and fried. I had the fish and chips. I asked for extra crispy for both and neither was. Rest of the party ordered the ribeye sandwich and they were very happy. There server was excellent. Best we have ever had. If you don't mind overpaying for your meal then I recommend trying it out .

Everything was really A-OK, considering it was a tavern/sports bar. I liked their Beer selection and would definitely return if nearby.

We were greeted quickly by a friendly server who got us drinks right away. We weren't ready to order and he did not rush us. He asked us to move our table number to the front of the table so he would know we were ready. I liked that touch! We went very traditional for breakfast. I opted for the French toast combo with bacon and hash browns. My friend opted for the spinach and feta omelet. Both arrived quickly and were fresh and hot. My food was tasty, the bacon was crispy as ordered and the hash browns were nicely shredded and not too greasy. The only thing that was a bit off was my friend asked for her omelet to be well done and she had to send it back for a recook. There was no problem with that and it was back quickly and definitely cooked much more to her liking. Overall I liked the place for a no frills but well cooked meal. The server was pleasant and we never had to ask for refills. Definitely recommend if you are in the area and looking for a nice, affordable meal.

Stopped in for a midweek lunch after they'd been open for a few weeks. Noticed my Yelp pal Mitch K…read morehad visited and gave a good review so in we sauntered. Nice redo of a basic box restaurant as we were promptly greeted, seated, and served. Ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, and lunch-size portion of mussels, and a Beef on a Weck sandwich with collard greens. The wine, the service, the mussels, and the collards were all very good. The Weck, however, did not live up to it's billng. Having grown up on 'em and made a few mean ones myself, this sammie is a basic French Dip with a sprinkle of caraway seeds. A proper Weck (i.e. Kimmelweck) is an egg washed Kaiser roll topped with lots of toasted caraway seeds and coarse sea salt, the beef is thinly sliced, medium rare beef (not thick, grey deli beef), and the horseradish is smeared on the beef vs. served on the side. Really not that good. Sip & Cider have a great location, an interesting menu, and plenty of space to be great. Has my "Give 'em a Whirl" meter heading back soon for another visit. Support local. Introduced another couple to this rather new Waxhaw eatery. Made a reservation by phone, because…read moretheir web site "reservations" link does not work. Not too crowded on this Sunday night with rainy weather, so were seated right away. Very nice and interesting menu. A lot of work went into developing it and they created many special names for sides. You will see. I had the blackened redfish entree ($25) and it was a very large portion of fish and the funny shrimp in rice side was pretty blah, though the fresh green beans were excellent. Won't order this entree again. Wife had a pecan crusted chicken salad ($15) that was a hamburger- sized patty of breaded chicken cut into strips, accompanied by a heap of lettuce mix. Pretty basic and wife tired of the "salad" quickly. Other couple had an appetizer of Fried Calamari ($16) along with a bowl of Tomato Bisque ($7). All of us loved the tomato bisque and recommend it. The calamari was over cooked/over fried with the smaller pieces hard enough to break a tooth and the larger pieces not much fun to eat. Kitchen needs to look at this, unless this is standard product. Wife had the Our Cuban sandwich ($13) which was exactly what a slushed Cuban should be, with smoked pork, ham, swiss cheese, topped with spicy mustard and pickles. All in a nice Telera roll, which was soft enough so that biting into the sandwich did not force the contents out the back of the sandwich on to the plate. She loved it. Yes we all split two desserts, an apple cobbler ($9) and a root beer float ($8). There is a nice beverage/libations menu and we ask you to pay attention to the prices. The wines have a small portion, a larger portion and bottle prices. I had a large glass of the Language of Yes Cuvée Sinsó, red blend at $22. Wife had a large glass of Ghostrunner Ungrafted Red Blend at $14 and the other wife had a large glass of Robert Mondavi Private Selection, Cabernet Sauvignon at $26. We felt the prices were very steep, but simply recommend that you look closely at the prices for each beverage you order so you will not be surprised at the cost. All said, Sip and Cinder is a good place to go. You will like the semi-casual atmosphere and clever menu. We will be returning.

Really has the makings of a 5-star restaurant, but there were some off-putting things that got in the way. Menu is excellent. Lots of choices, your place mat is your menu until you order. Our server stuck to his order of march: drinks, appetizers, mains desserts. It was mostly a non-alcohol dinner, so the drinks were an odd mix of soda water and colored drinks with flags. Can't tell you about wine list or other prices. Order taking took awhile and we got through it. My son and I each had the Steak Frites ($39.70). Nice portions. Suggest you order meat cooked to a higher level of doneness as they tend to go light on cooking. I ordered medium and got almost rare. Son ordered medium well and got high medium. Truffle fries were plentiful and a bit too salty with the Kosher salt. A decent dinner. One Maxx Burger ($21.85) inhaled by the 16 year old male. Liked it. One Kid Chicken Tenders ($10.30) with three sides. She liked the mashed potatoes and the chicken. One Chicken Picatta ($25.50), a special. Son paid the bill, I don't have receipt. Wife liked the chicken and the accompanying spaghetti with capers was very good. She took home a portion good for lunch the next day. One Pappardelle Bolognese ($29.35) well enjoyed by granddaughter. One California Chicken Sandwich ($20.70). Daughter-in-law ate half of it. Not a big eater. I did not like the finished meal plates snapped up one at a time. We were talking and it took awhile. Suggest you tell your waiters/bussers to wait until everyone is done, to ask if it is OK to take the plates and get it done. The slow eaters are under the gun to hurry up...and we, after dinner, thought that Burton's wanted diners to move quickly through their meals and clear out for other guests. This was evident when our server, who was not very well-versed, asked for dessert orders. We said no desserts. He left the table for a rather long time and returned, again asking for dessert orders. Obviously he was stymied not having that item accomplished. He left. Again, after quite a pause, we flagged another server down and asked for our bill. So, great menu and decent offerings, but we felt rushed. We all agreed, over ice cream bought at another vendor. Will be back. Burton's has a lot going for it, so will be worth your time, effort and money.
