I decided to go with May Cleaners based on the reviews here and from my local FB Being Neighborly group. I had two dresses I needed work on: one being a wedding dress and another a dinner reception dress. For the wedding dress, all I needed was an inch hemmed from the front, the back length was completely fine. Second dress I needed altered and taken in at the armpits. She said it was easy and no problem. When I came back to pick up my dresses, she hung them up on the hook up front and I went to open the zipper of the garment bag to look at them, she insisted that everything was there and rushed me out saying that I could come back if there are any issues. Because of the great reviews I didn't think anything of it, but now I'm kicking myself for not checking then and there. I went home and checked and the reception dress was fine. There was some loose thread where they took it in but I can cut that excess thread, and some dark spots which can be easily wiped off using a tide pen, but the wedding dress had pulled thread in two areas on the front. I brought it back and she said they'd fix it. When I went back, she showed the dress and it was not fixed. I pointed it out to her again and she said that was already there, I brought the dress in that condition, the dress is cheap fabric and that they were trying to be nice in helping to fix what I had done. When I told her it wasn't already there when I brought it in, she said I must have done it when I took it home and they are not responsible for that. She refused to refund me. The positive is that it's not that noticeable and it wasn't an expensive dress, but there clearly wasn't any care when working on this dress due to it being "cheap" and the fact that they didn't want to take responsibility for what they did is so terrible. Learn from my mistake - take videos of what you're bringing in so that there's no question of whether they damaged your clothes. read more

MAY CLEANS RUINED MY JACKET. DO NOT USE THEM FOR ALTERATIONS! They either don't know how to shorten a suit jacket sleeve or they chose a short cut with a terrible result. When I asked them why did they do it this way, they said the sleeves of my jacket needed to shorten too much and this was the only possible way. This is completely false because the sleeves needed to be shortened by only 0.3 inch or so. With another tailor I had used previously (sadly they closed their business), they were able to shorten my jacket sleeves by more than 0.5 inch and did it the proper way. This is a mom and pop shop so the hours are very different from normal regular shop hours. I wanted to drop off a dress to be shortened and a beautiful blouse that needs an extra Buffon. The staff there are SUPER nice and very honest. I got a quote from another shop for a ridiculous price and came over here to get another quote. Oh Yeah! This is where you want to go! The staff and cleaning service is excellent! But what really stand out is Lisa! She is sooo good at her craft! In the past she's done some great stuff with some pretty expensive shirts of mine, but recently I discovered she can basically deconstruct a vintage shirt and bring it into a more modern day and age by changing pretty much everything! If you know what you want, she can do it! Shirt below was purchased at a vintage shop on Haight St. Made of rayon. Was probably an extra large. I'm 5'6" 160lbs. Shoulders brought in an inch and a half. Sleeves shortened. Length shortened and instead of a boxy square cut she gave it subtle tuck cut. With the 70's shirts they often look really dated with those huge collars. Collar was brought in by an inch. Super reasonable price and the shirt looks like it came from Italy for a thousand dollars! BEWARE- NOT FOR ITEMS YOU CARE ABOUT. - I've been using this cleaners for 7 years for both dry cleaning and tailoring. The staff is generally very nice and helpful. This week I dropped off a blazer to have dry cleaned, mostly just needed pressing since it had traveled in a suitcase and had only been worn once. It was made of a standard high quality but not particularly delicate material. When I picked it up it was completely ruined and unwearable.There were various chemical stains/ burns and obvious signs of damage unrelated to a general cleaning/ pressing and it has been rendered completely unwearable. Obviously I have not had any issues with this business over the past 7 years so I trusted that something extraordinary must have happened. Due to that extraordinary amount of damage, I requested that the jacket be replaced (I had receipts to prove the cost). The owner not only refused, but was downright belligerent and wouldn't even look at pictures of the damage caused. It's unfortunate because it's a good local business that's been there for years and again, the staff have always been very nice. Not sure what's happening over there anymore but I would avoid if you have items you care about. read more

Let me put it to you in words... I have a super awesome job where I leave the house at 8:15 am and don't get home until 7:45 or 8 pm. This prevents me from: a)seeing a lot of daylight b)going to the cleaners c)engaging in human interaction I dropped my clothes off on Saturday as I needed them for an event on Thursday, they were scheduled for pickup on Tuesday. I paid in advance (which is totally awesome) and gave the slip to a friend for pickup due to my schedule. Long story short my pants didn't get picked up and I found myself calling May at 6:00 pm Wednesday evening. Turns out they close at 6:00 pm. Happy man on the phone says "how far away are you?" I tell him 5, 10 minutes...he says "ok, i'll wait here for you." Is this Coachella? Am I trippin balls in the desert? No, May Cleaners is just that stunning of an establishment. I ran over, and picked up my 3 blouses, 1 dress, one Jacket, and one pair of newly hemmed pants... I paid $34.00 total by the way. And...my jeans look effing fierce. read more

The most reasonable and inexpensive cleaner in TOWN! Same day cleaning is available for no extra charge! I have about 14 pairs of dress slacks that need dry cleaning. On my day off, I drive to this place. I find parking right up front and drop a few coins in the parking meter. Walk in with my bag of soiled dress slacks as I noticed the Cantonese talk radio station in the background as I approach the counter. Hand the guy behind the counter my pants as he counts them. Guy behind counter asks, "When do you need them?" I reply, "Take your time." He replies, "How about tomorrow." I reply back, "OK." I write down my name and phone number and the guy says, "See you tomorrow Justin." I just thought to myself....this person who I've only known for 30 seconds called me by my first name. Not that I'm freaked out about it, but I think it's just 100% good business practice to know your customers on a first name basis. I find that really shows generous customer service and attention to detail. Can't ask for better service than that! The neighborhood is ok during the day, but I would keep a watchful eye if wandering during the evening. Keep in mind; this is Oakland. My boss' wife recommended this place to me! The day before an important family event where dress code mandates that we pull out our square-ish clean clothes, my husband tells me that he "forgot" to drop off the plastic bag full of need-to-be-dry-cleaned-ASAP clothes at our neighborhood cleaners who incidentally DON'T do same day, next day, just some day service. So, I got on yelp. fast. me need cleaners. same day. cheap ass. in/near neighborhood. viola! May Cleaners!! For $14, I got two slacks (one of them Ann Taylor and the other Banana Republic - two stores that hold shares in the dry cleaning industry since all tags say "dry clean only"), one cashmere sweater (that was a gift, I wouldn't pay for a cashmere sweater), and a Brooks Brothers shirt laundered (that would be a gift too and we don't have time to actually iron before our trip). I dropped off all items at t 2pmish and it was all ready to go next day by 10am. Lots of parking, friendly folks, and they advertise an alterations service too! May Cleaners rocks! They do a great job and everyone who works there is really friendly. Their turnaround seems faster than any other dry cleaner I have used. I love it that they know my name and will go that extra mile when they can (on days that I've been running late they have opened the doors so I could still pick up.) They also do alterations and other sewing jobs. I've had a bunch of pants hemmed and I think they charged something crazy like $7. I also had them customize some panel curtains from ikea and they did a great job. If you live near Lake Merrit, especially East of the Lake near Park Blvd., they are really convenient. Found this place on Yelp. In most cases, I'll just go to my local dry cleaner, but I was looking to dry clean my wedding dress so I did my research. Most cleaners range $75-$150 for wedding dress cleaning, May Cleaners ranges $50-$150. (actual price depends on how complicated the dress is) I have to agree with the reviews - they did a fabulous job! My dress was super dirty because I had an indoor/outdoor wedding and I danced a lot in my wedding dress. It came back clean and beautiful! They're very thorough - the guy told me they even took before and after photos to show the difference! Hahaha! They ended up pricing my dress at $100, which I found to be acceptable. My dress was from David's Bridal - lace with lots of beads, trumpet shape with train. The people at May Cleaners seem quite honest. I told them I had already had my wedding and was cleaning for safe-keeping. They didn't try to sell me some $50-$75 package for "preservation," and told me that the best thing to do is keep it in the garment bag and out of the sun. No need for sprays, or for boxes (especially the clear ones that let light in and discolor the dress). A lot of the other places I called immediately tried to get me to pay them to essentially just fold and box my dress! Lame-O! read more
