An excellent Chinese restaurant in Eastwood. This restaurant operates on an all-you-can eat basis…read morewith a twist all the food is cooked to order and there is table service! No messing about going up to a buffet counter, just order with your server what dishes you would like next. Chicken Satay is excellent, as is the pork. In fact, all the dishes are cooked excellently and are very fresh. Don't go overboard on ordering dishes however! Also offer takeaways, of which I believe there is an offer along the lines of 3 dishes for £10, so long as one dish is a rice. A must visit for anyone in the area.

Sadly I found myself the only diner in the restaurant but still I went in to give it a go. Strange…read morethat they had to switch the music on to create the atmosphere as it looked like they were alarmed that I had walk through their open door. Once I was sat down (so many empty seats to choose) I was brought a drinks menu that had certainly seen better days a food menu which just listed the options for the all you can eat and a poor attempt for prawn crackers. They looked like the ones you would get out of a bag at Tesco not the big light but crunchy ones I get in my local Chinese in Bristol. So on to the food to start I ordered salt and pepper squid which was actually rather nice however I made a mistake and ordered salt and pepper beef as well. The beef came out like pork crackling and was vary salty compared to the squid. For my main I thought I would go for something with a bit of zing so ordered Chicken in lemon sauce and pork and mushrooms. Pork and mushrooms were good however the chicken was battered, hard and crunchier and the sauce resembled lemon curd not nice. I had some egg fried rice with it and there was just something about it that didn't seem like my locals egg fried rice. It was like the rice had been over boiled and the egg was added at a later stage and I doubt neither components had been fried at all. I know this seems harsh but I tell it as I find it and the most bizarre thing of all us the tables were laid out with spoons and forks........hello excuse me where are the chop sticks of do the people of Nottingham not have an ability to use them!!!!!!!!

Yesterday evening was my first experience at the Red Hot World Buffet. It's not that this place was…read moreabsolutely terrible, but I can't imagine I'll be going back any time soon. First, it's worth noting that this is a review of the newer, bigger Red Hot World Buffet at the Corner House, having moved from much smaller premises in Hockley. And when I say 'bigger', I mean this place is an Airplane Hangar of Buffet. It is so big that twice I actually lost the people I was 'dining' with. Red Hot (World) Buffet is sold as a 'social dining experience' - you walk in and it's dressed up like an airport where you 'check in' to your table and visit the microcosmic areas of the world, like a much smaller Epcot Center, to get your regional dishes. There's Indian, Chinese, American, Japanese, etc. You are not waited upon - you have to go and fetch the food yourself, which makes sense; this is a buffet after all. However, the handful of people I went with yesterday all have a) very different tastes, and b) very different eating habits. Consequently, the social dining experience wasn't very social at all. As an example: once we sat down and ordered our drinks, we all got up together to get our food. Now, I cannot emphasise this enough: this place is HUGE. Almost immediately we went off in different directions to find something we all liked. We probably wandered around for five minutes or so, and I came back to our table with a relatively tame selection of prawn toast, pizza and some samosas... but one of my friends had almost finished his plate of food, so barely a minute after I sat down, he was up again to get some more. And this went on; during the evening, there were usually never more than three people at the table at any one time, meaning I didn't really get to spend the evening with the people I went to dinner with. This is not entirely Red Hot World Buffet's fault; it is the very nature of their chain that they are a buffet. However, I feel they are pushing a 'social' selling point that doesn't really work out. As for the food: I would describe it as not entirely awesome. During the course of the evening, I had: crab claws (nice); samosas (fine); pizza (reheated & dry); chips (bleurgh); noodles (nice); cheesecake (warm?! bleurgh!); and chocolate mousse (fine, but also warm). There are certain stations where you can order a particular dish, and the burger bar is one of those. I ordered what was labelled as a 'Supreme Burger', which was *supposed* to be a beefburger with cheese and bacon. I asked for mine without any garnish or relish. What I received was a single, dry beefburger with onions and brown sauce. It was, I am sorry to say, extraordinarily gross. At the risk of sounding like a pedant (which I most definitely am), the signs labelling ALL of the food were a) rendered in Comic Sans, black text on a dark red background (i.e. barely readable), and b) almost universally misspelled. Some examples: - 'Burger with chilly' - 'Vinilla Flavour' - 'Sticky Date Pudding: Egg less' (less than what?) - 'Tiramasu Venician Style' I don't even know how pronounce that last one. I know this may sound facetious and flippant, but adding this all together with the food and my experience throughout the evening, the impression I got is one of general laziness and a lack of any kind of quality control, and it reminded me very much of 11 years of lunchtimes at a state school. As far as I'm concerned, Red Hot World Buffet is a Warehouse of School Dinners.

With buffets that do Chinese I always head straight for the Crispy Aromatic Duck: big mistake here!…read moreDuck it may have been (half the table thought it was probably chicken), but aromatic or crispy it certainly wasn't; rather than fresh cucumber and spring onion it came with something labeled as "leek", but which could easily have been the cardboard box the leeks were delivered in. Add to this the slow drinks service, the difficulty of getting new cutlery when they took your used plates away and the cold (quite a lot if people were eating wearing coats so it wasn't just me) and this is a place I really don't want to go back to. Some of the other food wasn't bad so they avoid a 1 rating. Just.

Frankly, I can't believe that i'm the first person to write a review for this place. A chinese…read morerestaurant called Mayfair has existed on this site for many years, and was the first chinese that my mother visited back in the 60s, and I have been visiting it for at least 20 years. In this age of all-you-can-eat chinese buffets, Mayfair makes a refreshing change (because it isn't one, as most new Nottingham chinese restaurants seem to be). Firstly, the decor is no-frills. Clean and simple. The place has a very informal atmosphere. They are not licensed, so you can take your own alcohol, which automatically makes for a cheaper bill. There are plenty of off-licenses nearby, so this system works fine. The menu is fairly standard chinese fodder, with a few unusual dishes thrown in for good measure. Occassionally there will also be an additional 'specials' menu, where new and more unusual dishes appear. The food is always good quality, and always arrives hot. Portions are generous, and Mike the manager is very helpful and friendly. I have recommended this place to many people, who have in turn recommended it to all and sundry. Pricewise, Mayfair represents fantastic value. I often go with friends, and we all have a soup to start along with some other mixed starters to share (ribs etc), and then we all have a main course with rice or noodles. When the bill comes, it seldom works out at more than £11 per head. It gets very busy on Friday and Saturday night, so book ahead to avoid disappointment. I love the friendly, informal, unpretentious nature of the place. Great to visit with friends, and they can cater for large groups if needed to. I probably would not recommend it if you fancy a romantic and intimate night out, or if you value decor above food and value. The only reason I can't bring myself to give this place 5 stars is because the speed of service can suffer somewhat at peak times, but for me it is always worth the wait. My recommendations? The king prawn and sweetcorn soup (although i've been told the hot and sour soup is exceptional), the salt and pepper spare ribs (dry, but spicy and delicious), and the squid in szechuan sauce. If you live in Nottingham and love chinese food but haven't tried Mayfair, where have you been?!

We had booked a table for 8 and although we were early, we were seated as soon as we arrived. The waiters are very attentive. We didn't go 10 minutes at a time without a waiter coming to see if we were ready to order or if everything was OK or if we wanted anymore drinks etc We were only there 5 minutes before we were chomping away on Popadoms which arrived in big round baskets complete with a tray of pickles. Our starters weren't far behind and the waiters were efficient and serving and clearing away. I am not a fan of curries really so I ordered the Lamb Korma which was delicious. I ate all of it and finished off all the rice too. The manager came over to see if we were enjoying ourselves and when we told him we were celebrating my friend's birthday he arranged a little surprise and sent over a complimentary glass of his favourite whisky along with a little cake with a candle on top which tasted delicious and really made my friend's night. I love the decor and the lighting and the place has a great atmosphere. I probably wouldn't go again as I said I am not really a fan of Curries but I would urge anyone who does like them to try it out :)

The difference is that they keep telling you about Gordon Ramsay. The curry is okay - probably a little more fancy than I would like, and when i say fancy, i mean bland. I know good food, and I know bland food served on an attractive plate. I want drama in a curry house. I want someone to order a vindaloo and cry from the hotness. I want to see a naan bread as big as the table. I want an unidentifyable substance that looks too luminous for its own good to be in one of the pickle trays. I want lots of dishes to be on the table and not be able to fit everything on. This ain't got it - it's got a weak story about Gordon Ramsay. Check out the Mem Saab for great fine dining curry - only two minute walk from this place, or any number of good curry places in Nottingham for a late night slap up curry and beer session.
