The parents at this school are very passionate about their school and their kids. After having a child graduate from this school and now attending a middle school, her Spanish is better than the Spanish teacher she now has. Though the model of 90/10 Spanish would be better, for the changing community that is not Spanish speaking, the 50/50 model works. Most of the teachers have been at the school for many years and are excellent at what they do. The parent board called FOM (Friends of Micheltorena) are committed to bringing a diverse voice to the school.

The principal is outstanding; she is always accessible to the parents and public when they have questions, concerns, or just want to discuss new ideas for the school. The teachers are well credentialed and very experienced, as is described on their teacher pages on the school's website, www.micheltorena.org; many of the teachers live local to the school and are active in the community. Next year, the school will implement the first year of its dual language program. The school does not appear "great" when condensed into numbers and statistics on websites that focus on API scores; Micheltorena has roughly 25% of its student population as special needs / speical education students, many of them coming from surrounding school districts like Ivanhoe and Franklin. When the API score, which includes test scores from these special education kids, is compiled, many parents are turned off and assume that the the scores are due to poor academics. However, my children have excelled at the school with teachers that they love, who are willing to individualize their teaching plans to different students' needs. The parents of children in the gifted program also report that their children are challenged and provided with instruction that meets their needs as well. The school has always focused on the arts, and at one time had the biggest elementary school orchestra in Los Angeles. It still has its orchestra which all children in grades 4th through 6th can participate in. Now the school is partnering with local arts organizations Silver Lake Conservatory of Music and Bluepalm, both who have supplemented the existing art curriculum with increased instruction and classes. And with the school garden that is co-managed by Silver Lake Neighborhood Council members and is open to the community, the school has truly become a community center. It is a wonderful experience to be a parent at this school. Come join us!

There are about 12-13 kids in his class and somehow each drop off and pick up feels personal to us. The teachers are so focused on each child's individual needs and we feel very supported as a new family at LILA.

It was our first choice, and the last few months of her enrollment have only reinforced our decision to enroll her. I was familiar with the rigors of the French academic system as well as the IB program, and this was something we really wanted for our child. It's a very different and richer experience than most American schools. "Diversity" has become narrowly defined. But the international diversity of the students' families is unmatched at other SoCal schools. Yes, many French and Western European family's, as might be expected. But we have families in our class from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, for example. My five year old is already correcting my French (which is admittedly terrible!) and she loves the school and it's the emphasis on language and expression. The teachers are patient and supportive and providing a good balance between structure and flexibility.

Ivanhoe is an incredible school, driven by wonderful faculty and staff and most importantly, the…read morecommunity it serves. Parents dedicate a lot of time and money into the school and it really shows through with the extra staff and programs that the school is able to support. Ivanhoe is actually one of the lowest funded schools in the LAUSD but you would never know it upon visiting. The children are offered programs like technology, art, dance, music and a library just to name a few. They have beloved events like the IvanhoeDown, the Holiday Market, the Hoops Classic, Art Night, and The Ivanhoe Social. It's a very well rounded school with a lot of community involvement and solid educational foundations. I've had one daughter go through Ivanhoe already, one son currently attending, and another son that will be in TK in a couple years. I wouldn't choose another school if given an option!! Ivanhoe all the way!!

The fact is, the teachers and staff at this school are tired and not taking the children's needs at this school seriously. If there are complaints of bullying, the staff should listen and investigate. But the principal did not, She has a LONG LIST of bad boys and girls and still insists there is no bullying at her school! She insisted THE child Not on the bad kid list is the problem!? Complete denial... only when we threatened contacting a lawyer did she take any action. And in the meantime making the Childern suffer as many parents clearly spoke out. Another note: if your child starts to fall behind and they will, with the lack of teaching in teachers. They will not care! They do not inform parents but instead ignore the duties they are responsible for. A Warning about Ivanhoe Elementary, and the principal! Don't move to the neighborhood for this school!

I cannot stress enough how much I love this school, the staff and the new principal as of 2024…read more My son is 4yrs old, He has an IEP for a speech delay and they welcomed him here full time (it is a dual enrollment). They accept 2-4yr olds or sooner if potty trained. But call to ask, I may be wrong! Drop off and pick up times vary, depends on your work schedule but they are open until 5pm. The communication with parents and teachers is exceptional. You are able to walk your child to their class and meet the adults in their class. The office manager is helpful and welcoming. Enrollment process is like any other school, the office manager is helpful and patient. The playground is clean and filled with kid friendly activities and toys. The team sets up fun performances for holidays, they have spirit week and the teachers discuss amongst themselves the agendas for the week. They allow parents to see that the team here care about our children and their education. Communicating with the teachers and principal is easy through an app. My son was enrolled at an EEC by Wilton and 8th street which was conveniently near our residence, however, the enrollment process, staff, drop off and everything in general was definitely 2/10. I much rather drive 4 miles during morning rush hour to have a better education for my kid. I recommend Dayton Heights to anyone in the LA area. This school is everything I hoped for as a mom. My second child will be attending here as soon as he can :)
