I've been happily attending Maynard's auctions for 15 years, and am happy to add a bit of balance to a ridiculously skewed set of review data. Number one: All auction houses have a Buyers Premium on auctioned goods. This occurs without exception across the globe, as auction houses are not charitable institutions; they are businesses. At an auction, the goods will be sold to the highest bidder, and there is no guarantee that your goods will circumvent fundamentals, and sell at an appraised or retail level. In fact, unless the goods are highly coveted, you can be reasonably assured of a disappointing outcome. Given this, no auctioneer would give a guarantee on a positive outcome, but would venture a conjecture; something that you cannot take to the bank. Auctions serve the purpose of liquidating masses of goods quickly. If you feel slighted that the clapped-out tat you dragged down to the auction didn't generate a king's ransom, then this is only a confession of your naïveté. As an example, let's examine the sale of a Persian rug. Depending upon its pedigree, it isn't uncommon for a rug to sell at auction for a tiny fraction of its retail value. This is normal. If the rug was an Isfahan signed rug, it will sell for considerably more than the bazaar grade rug, but unless it is rare Isfahan rug, or several bidders go mad, it will never sell for more than the retail rate. The bottom dropped out of the antiques market a decade ago, and there is not even a hint that it will recover anytime soon. This means that the once highly coveted Scottish Victorian chest of drawers you bought for $2K at auction in the late 90s/early 2000s can barely be given away for $100 today. Lastly, and this should be painfully obvious, a little research will go a long way towards staving off disappointing outcomes. If a set of Noritake China sold for x amount of dollars at auction two months earlier, you can be certain that when you trot your set in that the audience will not spontaneously burst into a standing ovation when yours appears up for bids. Like the laws of Physics, common sense always prevails over infantile wish fulfillments. read more

Over the years I have have bought all sorts of furniture, art, jewellery,rugs you name it I bought it. As far as I am concerned I got a great deal on whatever I won at the auction. No issues whatsoever. If you are bidding on an item I suggest you look at in person and then place your bid if it suits your fancy. Photos are not the same as looking at an item in person. That is true no matter if it is an auction, a hotel or some vacation destination, photos are only 1/2 the story both good and bad .. read more

INTERNET AUCTION BUYER BEWARE! I recently bid on and won an item (table) that, in the photo, had a specific item firmly attached and mentioned as part of the listing. I bid on the item solely because of this one piece that was attached. Only a few days after winning the item, I drove several hours to pick it up. The Maynard's Employee was friendly enough. However, after hunting the table amongst all the other lots that had been sold (very disorganized system), we found that the item that was attached had been removed and was nowhere to be found. The employee shrugged, said "it happens sometimes" and told me to contact the offices for a reimbursement of the cost of the table. They did reimburse me, but not for the 5 hours of my and a paid assistants time fruitlessly spent. VERY DISAPPOINTED. read more

I followed a friend down an alley and through a parking lot to an (almost) secret entrance to find this place. I'd wished I'd checked it out long before the summer wedding season when everyone I knew tied the knot! They had just done some bankruptcy buy-out and had rock bottom prices on lead crystal glasses. I am in-the-know when it comes to prices for a crystal champagne flute, as it is one of my go-to wedding gifts. This summer I was excited to find a sale at the Bay and I paid around $120 for 4 champagne flutes - that was the sale price! They were regularly $50 each. Here I found equally-beautiful flutes for $13.99 - plus 60% off!! That's around $5.60 per glass versus a "sale" glass at the Bay for $30. It was incredible, so I bought the entire shelf ... 21 glasses for less than the price of 4 at the Bay. I'm sure someone else will get married soon ... if not, I'm well stocked for a classy New Years Eve bubbly party! I am eager to go back to see what other treasures they might have coming in. There's always something different on their shelves. This time there was lots of fancy plate sets and Chinaware, crystal and silver. Item was not as described. The size was completely wrong, and this was a highly popular item, valued for $20, but won at $240. Highly unprofessional and deceitful of Maynards to describe the item as a size Large, when it was in fact a size XXL. There was no way to see if the size was correct from the images provided either, and the bidders had to trust Maynards for their words. Also note that I did send an email with a question regarding the lot before bidding, and clicked "request more information" but they never responded. Considering that this auction was marketed as an extremely exclusive sale, and people spent insane amount of money on both the sale and shipping, one would expect the lots to be described properly. Never buying anything from them again, and all of Supernatural fandom will know how truly unprofessional this was handled. read more

We hit the new location at lunch today. Maynards now has a second location on United Blvd in Coquitlam. They had sofa beds from hotels for $150...desks in light maple for $99 and bikes that go for $800 for $149. The attraction was the clearance of Ingledews shoes. Pointless since they had all of 4 pairs of dowdy shoes in my size. HOWEVER I made out like a bandit on interstesting furnitrue pieces, columbia boots for $19 and stationary ($150 worth for $31). We will go back and get a bike for my son, because at that price it is worth keeping in a box until he grows into it next Summer. Come with time to shop, and bring a trailer. I've always had a good experience at Maynards. You can't really find better prices than for goods from stores that are unfortunately going under. Maynards always has unique things available. Furniture is one of its specialties and I was happy to snag a large wooden chest with semi First Nations-looking carving on it - a solid cedar thing that now holds all the guest linens next to my pull-out sofa. It also doubles as my dinner table when I feel like eating on the couch, too. How much? Just $200 and it was in my apartment by the end of the day. Then there was the time I went to find jeans, which they didn't have, but what they did have was the bike liquidation. And yes, I bought again - but it's June and I want to try and be more active this summer! Great hybrid bike for $180, which, even with a tuneup and all, would be $200, and much less than anything I have seen in a specialty bike store. The people at Maynards are always quite helpful, pointing out both the positives and negatives of the goods they are selling. As a result, I have never walked away with a purchase I've been dissatisfied by. Great institution for the city. read more

Our experience with Maynard's on-line auction left a bad taste in our mouths. We made 3 purchases. One piece was fine, and we love it. Another had some condition issues (neither described nor shown in photographs). And the third was not at all as described, and had been carefully photographed to disguise the features that give away the fact it is a cheap knock-off reproduction. They stated that the item was Navajo, and it most definitely is not. Do not expect any degree of professionalism on their part. They could have refunded us on that third item from their commissions on our own purchases and still have made a small profit (and further profit from their seller's commission) - but they chose to hide behind their fine print and do nothing. If you can't show up in person to verify the authenticity of your prospective purchase, you can't rely on Maynard's honesty or expertise. Their reputation seems not to matter to them. read more

I purchased a rifle advertised as 358 norma magnum, I was charged $100 for packaging and $60 for postage. When I received the rifle, the bolt was not for the rifle. I called and i spoke to Neil who told me to see what i can do and that is my problem as any thing you buy is as is. I did try to fix the bolt but it was a big undertaking and some auctions I was told as the issue was not disclosed before the auction house should take some responsibility. I called the second and spoke to Neil again who seemed friendlier this time as i told him that if I would have tried to shoot the rifle i would have been seriously injured. He showed his sympathy this time by offering to sell the rifle for me on the next auction at no charge(I will have to ship the rifle to at my expense). I was surprised by the irresponsibility of that person when he said that. I would like to advise people to be very careful when buying on line from this auctioneer. read more

I had very high hopes for this place as a liquidation center. In fact I come here once a month on the way to visiting my best friend and the record store with the off chance that there would be something worth adopting, however, after 6 visits I feel that it is time to write a review. I come back empty handed each time. It is liquidated stuff of things that most people don't want or need. I have been to other liquidation houses with way better luck. It get's a 3 'cause the staff are decent enough and obviously there was continued hope but now it's time to call it quits. read more

If the spirit of antiques is a Scroogish mealy-mouthed kind of thing, then, for god's sake, give me the beanie babies. All kidding aside : Maynard's is a great place to shop ... and you don't have to be a snob, a rocket scientist or a paleontologist to shop here.
