Sadly disappointed by how much the quality deteriorated. The delicious, flavorful tacos I remember eating here in the past were sadly replaced by tacos with dry, tough meat. Idk if they are trying to do low-carb or what, but it didn't seem like there was any fatty goodness in any of the 3 tacos I ordered. Birria, carnitas, and pork pastor - none of them were juicy or flavorful. The tacos were only meat and radishes. No onion or cilantro. One of the unique aspects of this place is that they make authentic corn tortillas made from 100% heirloom corn sourced from small farms. However, today the tortillas were dry and tough at the edges. The tortillas and the gorditas were freshly made and another thing is, nothing fell apart! The consomé was the perfect pair with the birria, whatever you do ask for it to dip your quesadillas (apparently everyone throws it away). The salsa options were also a hit and everyone who knows good Mexican food knows the salsa makes a dish come together. This store is right next to the Starbucks in Pike place, so it's easy to miss behind the giant Starbucks line. But this is actually a great store with particularly unique tortillas. They nixtamalize their flour in house and you can definitely taste the difference in the tortillas. Coming from LA I've had my fair share of great tacos. But these are almost as good. While the tortillas are clearly the star, their meats are quite decent too. Though not as tender as I would have liked, the seasoning and toppings were spot on and the salsa was great. If the meat was a little bit better, I would have given it 5 stars, but there is still room to improve. If you're in visiting pike place and looking for really authentic Mexican food, this is definitely the place. It's a small little store without too much room to eat in store, but there is so much public area nearby to eat. I recommend taking out and watching the waterfront from the park. read more

O. M. G. Their Beef Ranchero taco was, hands down, THE best taco I've had EVER in the US. As the kids today say, "Period." The flavors, fresh ingredients, perfect blend of textures - ¡excelente! The gentleman who took my order said their tacos were most popular (I was deciding between tacos and gorditas), so I went with that. Had the steak ranchero and chicken tacos. Tender, flavorful shredded beef in the handmade, perfectly sized for hand-holding tortilla was everything I needed for my rumbling stomach. Chicken was good as well, but not life changing like the steak, haha. I still want to try the gorditas, but I can't guarantee I won't just get 3 steak rancheros next time, lol. It was a colder day and a lot of the more popular businesses had very long lines, so we seen Maiz (smelled it before we seen it) and stopped in. The business is on the smaller side (as a lot of Pike Place stores are) but had very minimal indoor seating (just two long tables along the side of the store with standing room only). We ordered a few items (tacos, quesadillas and drinks - both alcoholic and non). However, I only got a picture of my iced horchata latte as everyone was famished and scarfed the food down! The food was aromatic and flavorful, a bit on the expensive side but understandable given the location. My latte tasted like liquid rice pudding but more subtle. My only recommendation would be to use actual horchata in place of the milk part of the latte rather than milk and adding cinnamon. Definitely worth visiting and would recommend! read more

Maiz is highly recommended by local chefs for their fresh, handmade tortillas. Overall I think it's a good taco that suffers from being very overpriced - 3 tacos cost $22 in total including a hidden 15% service charge which I find a bit scummy. For the meats, I liked the carnitas the best. It's quite saucy, the meat is tender, and each bite was well balanced. Probably my favorite carnitas taco ever! The tacos come with a salsa verde which is well made and has a nice bitter flavor. I was a bit disappointed by the steak ranchero so I don't recommend getting that. I will also say that I thought the handmade tortillas were good but not life changing. Maybe if you're a chef you can appreciate the high quality tortilla ingredient that Maiz advertises, otherwise I suspect it'll just taste normal to you. read more

A must visit for the corn tortillas/dough, which they make in house with heirloom corn. There is a greater depth of flavor and the thicker dough is enjoyable. We got the tacos and tlacoyos, with all different meats. The tacos were a little less filling, so I recommend the tlacoyos if you want more of a meal. The restaurant is a small but brightly decorated place with a few seats for dining in. We love the freshly made tortillas! It tasted like corn on the cob. Like this rich corn flavor in the tortilla that I rarely experience and it just really made these tacos special. The meats were seasoned just right with a great balance of fat vs. lean and against the acidity of the pickled onions, it was just a great taco all the way around. Not a big line either. Went here yesterday for the first time after visiting the new waterfront. We ordered the tamales plate ($16), quesadillas ($18), horchata latte (I think $7?), and champurrado ($6). Here are my thoughts: -Food was delicious, fresh, and very flavorful -Very pricy for what you get, especially the quesadillas which sort of looked more like cheesy tacos and wasn't super filling. But, Pike Place is a tourist destination so.... -Bring cash or else they charge you 4% for card and the 4% charge shows up on the receipt as an additional amount for the items (instead of $16 for tamales plate I paid $16.64 and $6.24 instead of $6 for the champurrado) -Champurrado was chunky. Felt like it formed a skin on top and they just mixed it into the drink without straining. There were masa pieces at the bottom which I liked, but the skin pieces felt so gross -Service was very nice but minimal. Girl at the counter was pleasant. Another customer dropped their entire latte when I was there and the staff assured her it was ok and remade the drink for her -I really loved the decor. Colorful and bright. Spend some time looking at the tiles under the counter when you first walk in. Super fun to see the tiles with skeletons participating in different activities (like being a couch potato) -Only 4 seats and is a very small shop. Most likely you'll have to get to-go Idk, I liked this place but I wasn't loving the price to portion ratio. I probably wouldn't seek this place out again on my own. One of the best places to get tamales in the PNW! While the location isn't very convenient, if you're already visiting Pike Place then you have to go here. The blue corn masa chicken tamales are so so so good and I dream of them often. I've yet to find tamales that top these. They are moist but not soggy, and they are so packed with flavor but not spicy. The people working there were super friendly and got the food out quickly. There wasn't much space to sit and eat, but we did manage to nab a couple chairs at the table by the wall. It was super busy since we were there on a Saturday, but it was absolutely worth wading through the crowd of people. I will definitely be returning. read more

Hidden gem in a busy market with a million food options. Was in town for just the day and stumbled upon this place online and by the time I tasted it, wished I hadn't just eaten 1.5 pounds of chowder, because man it was amazing. I just came by for a bite and a coffee since we had just eaten at pike place chowder an hour or two before. I got the ceviche tostada, which was loaded with a generous portion of fresh ceviche that was one of the best bites I've had in a while. I came here since I was in the area and wanted to see what the hype was about. I guess I came at a busy time since there was a huge tour group inside the small store talking about the history and background of it. I managed to navigate myself to the front and got some food and drink. Some people there don't speak English as well + the added noise from the big group made it a little hard to hear and communicate but it wasn't too bad. I ended up ordering a steak taco and a chicharrone taco as well as a watermelon drink. Tacos: both tacos were stuffed with protein, onions, and other toppings. The taco shell was unique as it's not your typical. I do like the taco shell but the only critique was that it absorbed the liquid very fast making it mushy and fragile so you might end up eating it with a fork. Both pork and steak had good flavors. The watermelon drink was refreshing. I did wish there was a little hint of lemon or salt in the drink just to make it less sweet but that's just personal preference. You walk in and are greeted with colorful tiled walls and cumbia music so you feel as if you are in the right atmosphere for the type of food you are receiving. The area is tiny so there is only wall sitting in the place so no tables and expect to stand if it's busy. The cashier was friendly and very informative of their menu and answered all my questions. Sadly, I was disappointed by their food. The tortilla is definitely home made but it lacked any real flavor you would expect. I had the Carnitas Taco. The meat itself was tender and not so chewy but it lacked any real flavor, usually the grease from the pork fat offers a strong flavor but it wasn't present. The chips used in the Chilaquiles were not basted in the Chile which therefore didn't taste as one would expect. I was also disappointed to find that there wasn't a fried egg on top. The gentleman who made it had no idea what he was doing and kept asking the ladies behind him for help. As the only customer in the shop at that time the service was lacking.
