The interior is furnished with some original and some replica, but all very interesting. They give a quick talk, then you tour on your own. Definitely worth a stop.

We are also blessed with a new minister who helps us become better people all week long, not just on Sunday. Pastor Geoff Mitchell will wake you up on Sunday to serve others Monday-Saturday. And you better believe you will on Sunday. We also work in our community helping others. And this year I'm excited to work with a first grader @ Peabody Elementary. She is an at risk reader. Lindenwood is fantastic and inclusive to ALL! The community is wonderful and very welcoming! After…read moremonths of trying different churches in Memphis that missed the mark for us, my wife and I finally found one that helped us feel at home with messages of love, compassion, community, and inclusivity. They also put those messages into action through a multitude of community service events and programs. The leadership has been amazing, and had adapted well to Covid when we arrived by offering online services and following local health protocols to protect its members. I cannot recommend Lindenwood enough as a church to call home, no matter your background!

Inspired by the obscenely pleasant weather we've had over the past few weeks, I stopped by…read moreGermantown Municipal Park. Municipal Park is one of my long-time favorite suburban hang outs. No matter when I visit, it never seems crowded. There are tennis courts, a pond (with ducks), a pavilion, a playground, and a big open field that's perfect for playing. It's also the home of a historical home. The John Gray house is one of the oldest brick residences in Shelby County. It was originally located in Eads, but was moved to Municipal Park in 1989 for preservation. I've never been inside; every time I've been at the park, its doors have been locked. After a bit of enthusiastic jumping up and down (I'm short, and the windows are high up), I can report that the house is furnished as it probably would have been when it was built in the mid-1800s. Municipal Park is right next to the Germantown public library, which makes it a perfect place to catch up on your reading. The open field is perfect for picnics, and the playground has a huge jungle gym and swings.

I am new to Somerville, TN. On July 23, I went to the Fayette County Library to donate books…read more These were antique (and some rare) books. Some of them were children's books, such as Raggedy Ann and Andy, which cannot be found today. Some of them were British literature and English Literature. They were books that any collector of such books would appreciate. My first thought was to donate them to Goodwill so that they could be purchased by those who would appreciate them; however, my thought to donate them to the library won out. I had never been to that library before. I went through the front door with the first of two boxes. There were three ladies working at the front desk. Two of them met me with silence and never spoke to me (other than their silence). I went in and set the box down and told them I wanted to donate them. One of the ladies came over to me and told me there was another door to take them to. There was no sign whatsoever that that door was for donations. However, from the front entrance, that door led to a room that only a few feet away. The lady told me to move my car and take them to that other door. I told her my car was right at the front entrance and there was no need to move it. She put up such a fuss that I told her to show me the place to put them and I would take that box to the room. Remember that this was only the first of two boxes. She huffed and puffed about it and finally picked the box up and took it to that room and then opened the entry door to that room so that I could take the second box into that room. Both boxes had only a few books, so they were not heavy. I got the second box in through the donation door (which had no indication that it was to deliver donations). During that entire encounter, the woman did not speak to me. As I was leaving, I introduced myself and told her I was new in town and didn't know many people. She said she had lived here since whatever year and didn't know anyone. By then, I had surmised already that she did not care to know anyone. I wondered why she was working where she was working, what with dealing with people. I told her my son lived here and told her the name of his company and suggested that she may have seen his work vans around town. "I told you," she said sternly, "that I don't know anyone." Since I was there, I really wanted to get a library card and browse around through the books. After my encounter with these very hostile women (especially that one), I decided I had no inclination to ever go back there. I did inquire on behalf of my neighbor who is disabled, but loves to read, about what she had to do to get books from there. The woman said she has to have a TN driver's license. I told her again that the lady is disabled and does not drive and, therefore, has no license. I asked if she could produce something like a utility bill, etc. "No. She has to have a TN driver's license." There are so many disabled and elderly people in Somerville who don't drive and have no license because of that reason. Yet, they love to read, and it is one thing that would make their days and nights - their world - a better place in which to be. I would say that all three of those women need to be dismissed from their positions at Fayette County Library and replaced with others who love books and enjoy getting to know people (especially other readers). By the way, that hateful woman never even thanked me for my donation. From now on, and as long as those hateful, hostile women are in their positions, Goodwill is where I will do all of my book business.

This beautiful building was designed by James Gamble Rogers (who also designed several buildings on…read morethe Yale and Columbia University campuses) and was completed in 1909. It is in the neoclassical style and features a long portico topped by a cornice supported by massive Ionic columns. The courthouse is surrounded by multiple allegorical sculptures including "Justice" and "peace" and "Authority" and "Wisdom." The grounds are open and quite accessible to view from all angles. Metered street parking was available, but it's a Saturday morning. I would expect all of these spots to be busy during the week. There is a historical marker with more information, "Designed by Architect James Gamble Rogers and dedicated on January 1, 1910, the Shelby County Courthouse is the largest and most ornate in Tennessee. Quarterly Court Chairman James Hill Barret led the movement for the imposing structure with modern amenities. Upon approval of the project and issuance of $1,000,000 in bonds (later supplemented by an additional $500,000), he appointed N.C. Perkins to head the construction committee. Until 1966 this neo~classical building of blue Bedford limestone housed the executive and legislative chambers of Memphis and Shelby County governments, as well as state and local courts. Beginning in 1984 and utilizing taxes paid only by litigants, County Commissioner Charles Perkins directed an extensive, 8-year renovation that resulted in refurbished courtrooms and offices for Circuit, Probate, and Chancery Courts and the Civil Division of General Sessions Court. Many fine details were preserved and augmented, including mahogany doors and paneling, brass doorknobs embossed with the County seal, and walls, pilasters, and flooring comprised of seven varieties of marble."
