An absolute bloody disaster of a place. The customer service is zero. We needed help and they…read morecalled over the tannoy 4 or 5 times. The chap we needed was either on a break, or by the wheelbarrows, or on lunch, or outback or elsewhere on site depending on who you asked. The fact is he wasn't where he was needed nor did he appear, nor did he contact any colleague to say he could or couldn't come. After half a frustrating hour we asked for a manager - not to complain as the total absence of customer care proves that's pointless here but we guessed s/he might know enough to know the answer to the 2 questions we had. Guess what, the manager had apparently just gone to a meeting and would be at least an hour. Now how the staff member who had been dealing with me at customer service on the shop-floor on and off for 30 minutes knew this when I was the only person around her is beyond me. So this manager showed no interest, over half an hour, when one of the staff kept asking for the chap who couldn't be found over the tannoy or maybe s/he just couldn't be bothered either. We decided to go ahead and order. Ah but you can only order what you want on line but the web page kept dropping. So at a last stance we phoned to their 0333 helpline. It was an Asian gentleman who answered who could not be more unhelpful if he tried. He claimed he would face the same difficulties with his computer that I faced on line. He sounded as if he could not be less interested and within two minutes he cut me off. My advice is go anywhere else or do without. It's really not worth the adverse impact on blood pressure - it's a can't do, won't do company. Never again.

Made a stop at this Newry location on Monday and was happy enough with service and product…read more This location is a small volume store and the aisles feel pretty cramped, especially as I'm used to American big box stores like Lowes or Home Depot. This Newry location off the Five Ways gets a lot of trade coming from/to down South. I was here to pick-up a few different light bulbs my local Tesco's was too useless to stock, as well as a combi drill and some purpose hooks and screws/anchors. I was able to find my way around fine, although some sections did not make a lot of sense in terms merchandising but at least the sections I was in were well zoned. I was kinda disappointed with the poor availability of associates in the store. I barely noticed shop floor people in the store - the one random chap who seemed to be covering multiple depts was doing his best to help one customer after another, including me. He was trying to work power equipment but to his credit was very good about being patient in answering people's questions and not letting it show we were keeping him back from whatever tasks hd had going on. He walked us around the shelves where I needed to grab the bits and pieces I was after and even got the saw in lumber going to trim down some board for us. Good man, 'Aidy'! = polite, friendly customer service. If it weren't for the lack of adequate shop floor staff, I would've marked higher, and also for the fact that some basic items were priced oddly expensive for what they were i.e. ten sheets of one grade type of sandpaper for roughly £7-8 when ten sheets of various grade sandpaper can be found in Tesco for just under two quid?! Anyway, happy enough to continue to visit this location out if I couldn't be bothered to drive to the Sprucefield one instead.

Sampsons is one of those places that sort of sells everything. I once went in with a list of the…read moremost obscure stuff imaginable, I think the list included a 40 watt light bulb, some miracle grow, a poker and a bag of turf. Upon entrance the list was taken off me and low and behold within 1 minute all items were on the counter waiting for payment. This is the type of shop Sampsons is, no matter how odd the request they will have it. They are primarily a hardware store but they have recently diversified to the garden market and now offer potted plants and compost. Although on the downside I found the shop very confusing so if you do not know exactly what you are looking for it is best to ask. Sampsons is very reasonable in price and he will sometimes throw in a few extra bits and bobs if he thinks you need them. The only real alternative is Homebase or another big DIY specialist but if you are in the centre of town and you need something no matter how strange (I think they even do plastic spanners and left handed screw drivers) then Sampsons is the place to go.

It is based on Hamilton Road which means that it can be tough to get to because of the one-way system but if you park the car in the Asda Car Park it is only a wee hop, skip and a jump across the road so you should be ok. This place stocks everything from garden pots, tools, miracle gro, DIY tools, hammers, spanners, nuts, bolts, brushes, hoes, rakes and basically every type of hardware that you could possibly think of other than light firearms. The staff are knowlegeable and extremely helpful. Always polite and efficent, they make popping in here to pick something up a charm.

To be honest I only had a vague idea of what I was looking for but the blokes in Castle helped me out as soon as I walked through the door. This is an old school DIY and hardware store - they seem to have everything behind that counter. The good thing about coming here rather than going to a chain shop is that I was able to walk in ask an expert and leave within 5 minutes. I also didn't have to buy anything I didn't need. They stock plumbing, electrical and decorating equipment including paint but I would suggest just going in and speaking to the guys who work there - they couldn't have been more helpful. What's more, the electrical blocks cost me under £2! Great value!

I'm not a driver so if something goes wrong or I need to get some paint, its hassle to go to one of the big B&Q or the other big stores. The staff have a great knowledge of everything they sell. I needed some orange paint and whilst they didn't have a certain insane colour (not my choice!), but they offered to get it delivered in withouth any extra charge. Pleasant, knowledgeable guys who will go that extra mile to help.
