Their office had to file extensions "on by behalf" that I would not have needed if they had been more transparent. I only knew of the deadlines from my husband's opposing counsel. By the end of April I was still being asked for new information about my financials and an order of contempt was to filed and fine incurred because paperwork was not being processed in time. My husband had to stop the order of contempt. Luckily for me our divorce was amicable between the parties but my time with Barnett and Gill was not. I had to sever my relationship with the firm and come to an agreement with my husband alone to move on. Very disappointed in the level of service. I never spoke to a lawyer (Jana) until I requested an end to our contract. They made a hard time worse for me and will keep my retainer even though their office did nothing in the end to help me. I returned to Thomas for a Child Support modification on the SAME divorce case he worked on 9 years ago and was charged double the amount upfront! Just for a modification! Guess this is due to the fancy new renovations in the office. Secondly my Ex's lawyer who is a super junior lawyer btw was literally "WALKING THE DOG" on me while Thomas did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on my case except go on vacation for a month and leave it with Jana (Barnett) who had no clue what was going on! He didn't even tell me he left the case with her. It wasn't until I called to find out what was going on that I found out he dropped the ball! So $5,000 later and all that was done was about 3 electronic motions filed. MY paperwork WAS RIDDLED with ERRORS, they kept filing me to the court with the wrong name, wrong address and not only were there multiple mistakes in my file that were made on the part of their firm. She confirmed little to NOTHING regarding communication between her and my lawyer. When I called them about it (via email). they replied" it doesn't matter the retainer is paid and there's no refunds anyway".... LISTEN TO ME NOW OR BELIEVE ME LATER... Thomas has the SOFTEST BACKBONE IN THE GAME!!! He will start right out the gate telling you what he cannot do! He will pass you off to his colleague and bill at the highest rate. They do sloppy work and do not give a damn! THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND DO NADA!!!!! They don't listen for understanding & you will be constantly repeating and explaining yourself over and over and over. Don't walk, RUN from this FIRM!!! I can prove EVERTHING I am saying! Howard Ellzey was my attorney, upon reviewing the contract there's a section on there that says "Retainer Fees" make sure you clearly understand what this is saying, they are taking a extra $950 from you upon paying the 6k retainer fee. He words it in a way to be deceitful. He sat on my retainer for 14 days, I had two days left to reply to the petition or i would of defaulted on my case. Had i not called and left a voice mail for him on day 18 then who knows what would of happened. He made it seem in the consult he would be right on it. He then is not up front in emails and you wind up sending 5-12 messages back and forth to see what he really needs from you. He will charge for those as well. He will also charge for emails he clearly states in the bottom " I am not charging you for the time it took to reply to this email". I did bring these discrepancies and many others up with him and he told me they made no sense to him. He will also chalk it up as "more than usual amount of emails" but again, he sends unnecessary emails. Then tried to send me a new invoice for $1,700+ more because I brought these things up to him. This is what you call intimidation at its finest. He can be very condescending as well. After paying 10k to not even make it to mediation my mind is blown. Taking full advantage of a single mother of two in a time of distress. He will also sit on any paper work then make you feel rushed to redo all of it & send it over organized, because i guess the amount i paid didn't cover him organizing the paper work. not even two months on retainer and i still haven't made it to mediation why? because Howard refused to set a date with the opposing party. I strongly urge others to think twice before hiring this individual. Legal representation should bring clarity and confidence, not confusion and distrust. If you're in a vulnerable situation, particularly involving family law or custody matters, this is not the kind of advocate you want on your side.
