I want to love this place, but I have to say the staff is never that welcoming. No one acts like they want to serve you. There is one particular bartender though (female) who is a JOY and always checks up. You will know when you have her, bubbly with a smile. On busy nights it's hard to find a seat. Once you do though, the feel is cozy and charming. Real hometown. The menu has classic bar staples at average to high prices, but usually large portions, tasty, and of quality. The garlic parm wings are a must get. Very meaty with crispy skin and sauce that doesn't lack. Top notch blue cheese with real chunks. French onion soup would also recommend. Have tried other apps here and was never disappointed. They offer some weekday price specials so keep a lookout. Entrees & dessert I have yet to try so still pending... They do live music nightly--can't say it's the top acts of the area. Hit or miss but does the job. It's also the spot to be for St. Paddy's. It's family owned and they give back to the community, so it's worth patronizing. read more

This place is very local. Old crowd comin in and hugging the hostess. The bar stretches throughout the place, the restaurant is very long. We sat at a table looking at our menus, watching the open kitchen cook. We were given a pitcher of water and waiting a very long time for our drinks. What seemed to be the owner was a very nice woman taking all the orders. Very frazzled. We got the Blarney Balls, very good and just what u want, Irish nachos, came out burnt, plastic nacho cheese and some green onions, cheese curds, can't go wrong with cheese curds, and the clams. Oh also a bowl of cheddar broccoli which came out cold and we had to send back to be put into the oven. I say this with every bar I've gone to, get bar food. Cheese curds yes, wings yes, our wings were crispy and had no flavor. We had to ask for extra sauce bc they just tasted like chicken. I'm sure their handhelds would be excellent but I didn't partake so I can't say if they were or not. OMG if I hear another fricken plate get smashed. It seemed as if the chef DIDNT wanna be there. Smashing shit and half assing the food ‍. Come here for the bar scene. Live music and loud talking. 5.4/10. Again. VERY NICE PPL!!! Food not so much. read more

I stopped in.....wanting some local ambiance, and that is what I got. I always try the Fish and Chips when I see it on the menu......and I was not disappointed. It was really good.....big pieces of Cod perfectly breaded and cooked. My wife had the burger, said it was done perfectly. We were rushed on that day.....but plan on stopping back again. This time we sat at the Bar.....listened to the locals talk. Might try a table next time, and there will be a next time. read more

I was very disappointed in this tavern. It was 6:15 pm & only 2 people were sitting at the bar. I went because the menu indicated the Wednesday night special was Fish & Chips. Not seeing it, I asked & was apologized too. The waitress/bartender said that they had dropped many of the specials due to the pandemic & she hadn't gotten around to changing the menu online (in 2 years?). I then asked what IPA's they had. Only one kind. My partner wanted Coors Light. It wasn't on tap. We ordered onion rings as an appetizer but the only sauce to be served was ketchup. My cheeseburger was severely underdone after ordering it medium but not bloody. Even after sending it back, it was still mooing. I ate a small end & took the rest home for the dog as well as my partners steak tips that appeared grey. While the bartender was very pleasant it doesn't make up for the food. read more

10 minutes to take our drink order, 10 more to get them. We only ordered draft beer and we'll soda. First beer came out in a 16oz pint glass. Second came out in a 12oz mug. Same price. Food was fine tasting and looking. It was only mildly warm, which makes me think it was sitting out. Probably, considering it took 35 minutes to come out. Asked for "no pickles and a side of hot sauce". Pickles all over the dish and no hot sauce. They had a fixed menu for kids, which was nice. $10 for a soda, entree, and ice cream. Waitress didn't even know they had ice cream. Very odd considering there were quite a few kids there. Not a completely terrible experience, but many other places around in Belmar that are leaps and bounds better. To be fair, I think they just changed ownership, but I could be wrong. read more

On recent weekday night the wife says to me "I could really go for a Mc Canns burger for dinner tonight but I'll be home late." No problem says me I'll just go over there and pick up a couple of burgers to go and so I did. While sitting at the bar watching the cook on the front grill I could not see him doing my burgers, then all of a sudden the bar maid lays them in front of me bagged to go and they came out of the back kitchen. OK I head out the door. Got home within a few minutes and the burgers were not only over cooked but tepid and not hot and neither were the fries. To add insult to injury the greedy Irishman charges a $1 more for a take out order as well as charging more about $2 for extra pickle and extra peppers. Fancy that he has the distinction of having both the best burgers and the worst burgers on the Jersey shore depending what side of the joint there made on. Worked here years ago. Owner would take a cut of the tips. Saw him at the tail end of pouring cheap booze in better bottles. And saw him tap domestic kegs that were cheaper than the beer that is supposed to be on the tap. The grill behind the bar was awesome but the regular kitchen was filthy. Second time going here. First time was a Saturday afternoon. All we wanted was lunch and a drink. Very tall man was working alone. We tried ordering off the menu. Everything we ordered he had to check the basement freezer for items for simple things. Apparently we ordered the last set of wings. We kept cleaning the table for him. Whatever it's a dive bar. Still the best steak on the Jersey shore. Great place to stop after the beach or work. Great place for lunch, dinner or late night. Warm and friendly atmosphere and child friendly. They have entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. My little girls (10 and 14) love the karaoke! They are little hams. It has pool tables in the back which are fun for all. It has multiple flat screens for every kind of sports. My son Glenn (16) loves to watch the football. All 6 of my kids LOVE the garlic steak! I like the seafood dishes. I am a former Assistant Commissioner of Health for New Jersey and past president of the New Jersey Public Health Association and I find McCann's get an A+ from me for cleanliness, atmosphere, quality of the food and friendly service. It is one of the best kept secrets on the Jersey shore and I give it my best recommendation. Any family or friends who visit are always taken here as one of the must visit restaurants on the Jersey shore. I love the bar which is done up with beautiful wood and brass railing. McCann's Tavern in Belmar NJ has a classy and respectful sports bar atmosphere. It has a beautiful pine wood finish and brass railings on the bar held in place by the trunks of brass elephants. It is quite beautiful. I live in Florida but was born and raised a "Jersey girl" and visit the Jersey shore frequently. A very good friend of mine Dr. Jim B invited me for the best steak on the Jersey shore and I ordered the legendary Garlic Steak and Sicilian Fries and saw it masterfully prepared and cooked before my eyes. It was out of this world! I wanted to steal his specially prepared bottle of steak sauce and sneak it home with me. They happen to have a nice arrangement one of the large screen TVs and one was tuned to a Green Bay Packer game. It was the Jets versus the Packers and the locals noticed that I was routing for the Packers. They asked me why I was favoring the Packers because it wasn't the local team and I told them it was my uncle Vin's team. They said did you mean the great Vince Lombardi was your uncle? I told them yes and that I had been to see his grave and my mother's grave in Middletown New Jersey the previous day. I was actually thrilled to see people who still knew who Vince Lombardi was. Many of the kids today have never heard of him. The owner of the Tavern, Tommy McCann, was really nice and was quite knowledgeable about sports and an excellent chef. It's a family run business with a real "homey" and local atmosphere and it is a fun place for all ages. It's a great place for lunch, dinner or late night. I highly recommend it!! read more

A notch below "just ok". Started with the hot and spicy shrimp- I liked it, wife swears its just shrimp, floating in a spoonful of chile... Also ordered 20 oz sirloin, with sicilian fries. Fries were good, but way way light on seasoning; Sirloin was cooked well, but no rub, no butter, no salt, no pepper, no seasoning. no sauce, etc --- just a bland piece of meat. As for service, note to bartenders- we are so sorry that you had to serve us, and we had to pay money to this establishment. Don't worry we wont bother you again, that way you can share your pissy attitude with other customers, while we spend our money and enjoy a night out with your competition. Note to the owner. Friday night with Stu Hooten rocking the acoustic guitar was definitely 5 stars. Our waitress, I believe her name was Kelly was working her tail off, in between the tables and the bar, as she was wonderful, and definitely 4 stars. The food is good, it's good bar food, delivered hot and goes well with consuming alcohol, rocking out to Stu "f'n" Hooten. Here's my rub to a certain extent. I don't recall getting a round of drinks on the house, and we spent over $500 in bar that Guy Fieri would label a dive bar or local bar. Walked in 1 hour prior and told that they were closing up. Don't look for good service

Went there last night with my old lady for the first time. No seats at the bar so we say at a table. There were no waiters so one of the bartenders came out to serve us. He was great, very fast and courteous. I got the Country Derry which is this bomb ass sandwich I ended up dreaming about that night. Kim got the steak sandwich which she also loved. We'd totally recommend this place to anyone as the food is a notch above typical pub food. It's not the average mick joint by any means. Also their steaks are cut to order depending on how many ounces you'd like it to be. Would've given it 5 stars but the service was lacking a tad plus the owner is a prick to say the absolute least. Ohhhhhhhh McCann's. You shine like a beacon to us every time we're back up visiting family, it's late, we'd like a few stiff drinks, and perhaps we're HONGRAY and seeking something better than just a slice. This is an unassuming little Irish pub. It's frequented by locals and a great place to go if you're trying to avoid the Guidos and the drunken overflow from Bar A. It's a good place to get solid, reasonable drinks - something that can be rare down the shore ($overpriced well drinks at *insert shore bar/ club here*, anyone?). There's often live music (good variety, too!), and the space is comfortable, clean and well-maintained. But, even with all those wonderful benefits, for me the big star is the food. For your appetizer, skip the greasy fried junk. Go for the mussels in white wine and garlic or the roasted clams. (You're at the shore, for heaven's sake! Have some seafood!) As for your main course... Well, the owner (Tom) is always there manning the grill... and let me tell you: The guy knows his way around a steak. Personally, I roll with the steak au poivre, medium rare. (The bf usually rolls with the Steak McCann, which is topped with a brown sauce and some pretty hot peppers... and for what it's worth, I've tried the other specialty steaks on the menu, each of which has a different topper, and they're all tasty.) Your steak comes with a soup or salad (I get the salad and bypass the dressing, heading straight for the house steak sauce, which is killer) as well as your choice of potato. Like garlic? Just say "Sicilian". These are sliced, lightly fried and topped (or slathered, rather) with a delicious garlic concoction that you will want on everything you eat from that day forward. If you're not feeling some alone time with a big slab o' meat, then opt for the steak sandwich on garlic toast. It's a great way to get a taste of the good stuff, but on a budget. So, yes. McCann's. It hasn't yet failed us, and I doubt it ever will. Tom is personally invested in this place, and it shows. The food is consistent, the service decent, and the location gets better and better. (Tom has slowly been renovating the entire place... the new ladies bathroom? A welcomed addition!) Give this under the radar local spot a shot -- you won't regret it! read more

After my experience a couple nights ago I feel the need to sit down and write a review about McCann's. Firstly, I would like to clarify that I raised the vote to two stars only because I have had good food there before. However, one horrible experience at an establishment can drive away the most loyal customer no matter the history. It was Monday night this week and to be fair, EVERY local restaurant was very busy. So we made our way around looking for a fun place with decent food that also happened to have the football game on. Our first 3 choices were slammed and had long waits so we kept on trucking and headed towards McCann's, hungry but happy knowing how good the food can be there. So, we sit down at the bar and after 15 minutes one of the three employees that had passed us multiple times finally made eye contact. (not a friendly smile or utterance was spoken to us during the entire 45 minute ordeal) The employee asks us if we would like a drink, we order and I mention that we would like to see a menu... to which he makes a obnoxious sound of frustration, rolls his eyes and mutters something as he turns to walk away without even attempting to offer us a menu. Being the patient and understanding people we are we just assume they are having a rough night and will get to us when they catch their breath. For the next 30 minutes we watched as 3 different employees walked back and forth right in front of us as we sat with empty drink glasses and never once even looked in our direction (to the extent that it appeared as though they thought if they didn't look towards us we would go away... And ultimately we did). I don't ask for much but I don't expect to have to tackle a server for decent service or even just a kind word showing they care about their paying customers. That was some of the worst service, or lack of, I've ever seen in my life and after leaving hungry we will not be back again. read more
