The signage is pure Farrow & Ball and there's wooden crates artfully displaying mountains of butternut squash, sweet potaties and oranges. Two steps inside however, and you realise the owners have created more of a post-modern corner store with everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, organic eggs, milk and cheese to homemade cakes, soups and palm-sized quiches. The majority of it looks lip-smackingly good and is priced reasonably with coffee, pastries and salads to take away for commuters. Handily, they also sell big bags of rice, pasta, pulses and herbs and lots of Ecover household and cleaning products. In a strange twist, they also stock a small variety of rental DVDs from the owner's previous business - so you can pick up a blockbuster or rom-com with your grains and groceries!

At 60p for a big batch of cinnamon sticks, I would say that Grocer & grain is the right value for right amount. It did seem a little bit cheaper than other markets in the area, which is great if you just spent £24 on a ticket to London!

I was walking…read morearound the shop, taking some notes on the place, when he asked me what I was doing, to which I told him that I was writing reviews for an internet database. Within one minute, I was standing behind the counter, trying to help him sort out his dodgy internet connection. I had, of course, been given this job because he assumed that I must, being young, and using the internet daily, also be a technician. He was sadly wrong, and I couldn't help. But anyway, he was a nice guy and runs this shop in a nice informal way, and it helps to oil the shopping experience as you don't feel pressurised to buy stuff immediately. As soon as you walk in, you don't also think that there would be much else to buy other than the usual selection of fizzy drinks and sandwiches in the main fridge, but actually if you walk to the back of the store there is a really decent selection of Ales. Really decent. Better than a lot of off licenses. Harveys, Fullers, Hepworth, Batemans, Wychwood and Fenning's (who brew a beer called Sneck Lifter, wow!) are all represented in large number, so if you like real ales I would definitely have a look at this place. Bottles cost about £2 each. Also a large selection of wine's, a card rack, and a slightly depleted but eclectic array of Polish and Turkish foods, such Ajvar's Eggplant and pepper spread; which could be amazing, could be disgusting?

After you walk past…read morethe standard array of fizzy drinks and chocolate bars that greets you at the entrance of every corner shop I have ever been to, you suddenly realise the place goes back... a long way back. On your way to the back you walk past a lot of wines, and at the back you find... yep, lots of wines! And a far superior selection of ales than often greets the seasoned ale drinker, with something to tickle the fancy of any alcohol seeking patron. I didn't see anything jumping out as being exceptionally good value, but then the range included some more upmarket products, so its excusable. My one major complaint that would be solved instantly by talking to the friendly shop keeper, is that it wasn't all that clear as to what everything cost. In the case of the ales, there was one price for two different shelves, with an arrow pointing away from all of them... But I get the feeling he keeps things simple, and charges the same for everything! Its also right near a bus stop, making it convenient to hop off at, or to wait in for your bus (if its cold and wet and you need shelter). Ace.

I finally realised how old and uncool I was when found out that a new Sainsbury's Local was being…read morebuilt at the end of my road, and the discovery was basically the highlight of my week. Admittedly the prospect of being delivered from the evils of the nearby Tesco Express would probably be enough to raise most people's spirits, but it was with a rather unhealthy level of longing that I gazed upon the wooden facing that for a few weeks shielded the work going on inside. The Sainsbury's is now open, and, unsurprisingly, it's OK. Nothing amazing, but it's definitely an improvement. For one thing they sell coffee filter papers, but their stock in general is more wide ranging. I even managed to buy hollandaise sauce in there, although I wouldn't recommend hollandaise out of a jar, it turned out to taste of jellied vinegar. They have more service points than the Tesco too, and the cherry on the cake is the free cashpoint. Until that one arrived it was a good 10 minute walk in either direction to get to a free cashpoint, which meant a lot of money was wasted on buying small items in the Tesco in order to get cash back.

Wine Me Up is one of those neighbourhood stores that makes everyone that lives in the area groan…read more Aside from the tacky title and horrible signage, it has a big board outside advertising two bottles of wine for £5. There's also signs in the window advertising cheap beer, cider and alcopops - which makes it a dream destination for teenagers and drunks. I've popped in a few times for bottles of Sol and Corona when the other off licenses in the area were already closed but I wouldn't touch most of the wine with a barge pole. With such cheap prices, I'm imagining most of it probably tastes like battery acid. You can probably find a couple of decent bottles if you look hard enough but I'd rather go to an off license with a passion for good wine and liquor.

As you'd expect with a name like 'Wine Me Up', the range of wines is particularly large, despite the store's relatively small size. You'll also find a really good choice of beers and spirits, indeed the selection for the latter far exceeds that of most chain supermarkets, who generally only offer the same, repetitive assortment of commercial brands. The prices are also competitive, and you'll find a range of snacks and soft drinks.
