Now, when one hears "sports bar," certain expectations naturally follow: A menu of reliable, if unimaginative, pub fare; Service that is brisk without being brusque; and Televisions broadcasting actual sports--plural. These were the modest criteria for our Saturday night outing. We wanted casual, we wanted laid-back, and above all, we wanted to watch the Leafs take on the Blackhawks in an original-six matchup. A simple request, really--the sort of thing that should be baked into the DNA of any establishment daring to call itself a sports bar. Instead, what we got was a masterclass in missing the point. Unbeknownst to me, the evening coincided with a major UFC event--a spectacle I neither follow nor resent, but which apparently consumed every screen in the building like an invasive species. Upon seating, I made the radical suggestion that one--just one--of the many televisions be tuned to the hockey broadcast. This was met with the kind of inertia usually reserved for geological formations. I understand The Dudley likely paid handsomely for the privilege of airing the fight, but here's a thought: read the room. Beyond a half-dozen twenty-somethings glued to the octagon, the rest of the bar seemed about as invested in UFC as they were in quantum mechanics. From there, the evening spiraled into mediocrity. The booth assigned to us was a Jackson Pollock of crumbs and congealed sauces; I left with shoes that looked like they'd moonlighted as mop heads. Unacceptable. The food? A triumph of apathy. Whoever plated our meals did so with the enthusiasm of a teenager forced to write an essay on a Saturday. Pub grub doesn't need to be art, but when everything else is circling the drain, it should at least try to be edible with flair. Instead, dishes advertised with whimsical touches--"tomato jam," for instance (a pretentious euphemism for ketchup?)--were executed so half-heartedly that one wonders why the charade exists at all. Innovation without delivery isn't clever; it's culinary cosplay. In conclusion, while this visit does not permanently exile The Dudley from future consideration, let's just say it won't be topping my list anytime soon. Mediocrity may be forgivable, but only when paired with effort--and effort was conspicuously absent.

The service by Angie was great and we really enjoyed and liked her company. She said her long range goals were to be a vet, so we introduced her to our dog. She was so nice and gracious. The food we had was top notch and enough to take with us. We had the beet salad and the goat cheese was so good, as were the fresh beets. It also had walnuts,another of my favorites. Then we had the shrimp appetizer, which was perfectly cooked. It's similar to a scampi. My husband got the lobster ravioli and the actual ravioli was so good and did not skimp on the lobster. The Viognier I got paired well with the shrimp and my husband got a Chardonnay he liked very much. Far as any suggestions I have to simply make each dish really stand out, I would have a vodka sauce with a bit of tomato flavor on the ravioli, which would help with not overpowering the delicate flavors of the lobster. The sauce was very tasty however, but a bit much for the ravioli. I would also toast the walnuts for the salad. Those are my honest suggestions as a foodie. We got there a bit before 8 a good hour prior to them closing. There were maybe five or six tables at various stages of service. We were quickly seated, given waters and menus, and then forgotten for 20 minutes. We finally asked the other server, who I believe in one of the owners, if we could order. Our server came over quickly and apologized profusely, but the damage was done. Our martinis came quickly after we asked for them as did our Caesar salad, which initially seemed too garlicky, and was in fact not. I ordered the Veal Parmesan while the lovely K had the Sun-dried Tomato Fettuccine. It came as advertised, but was not what she was looking for, certainly not the fault of the kitchen. My veal was somehow a bit chewy, and had too much breading and cheese on it. The in-house made pasta (as they all are, kudos for that) was nicely done, but the protein overshadowed the sauce. The interior is nicely decorated and there is a patio area there for the nice days. The open kitchen is a favourite of ours, but it also exposes any issues that may be going on. All in all, it was not a good experience for us, but mistakes happen and we would give them a try again, as K had a good initial experience. That's the reason we went there, and one bad evening shouldn't end it all. Nice restaurants are not plentiful in PG, so everyone deserves to drop back and punt very occasionally.
