I am a tech employee from Los Angeles, now living and working abroad in the UK. I worked online with Brian through Skype for a total of 10 hours, and he helped me improve my GMAT score from 560 (39%) to 710 (91%), on my first attempt after his coaching / private tutoring. Due to some personal issues I was going through, my college GPA wasn't as high as it should have been, so a high GMAT score was an essential part of my business school plans. Luckily, Brian took the stress and the guesswork out of GMAT prep. He provided all the materials and homework assignments, and all I had to do was find the time and put in the effort, which was easier to do with his encouragement and help. Brian and I met once a week for one hour per lesson to help explain the parts of the homework that didn't make sense, and to review any questions I had from the previous weeks' practice exams. I am by nature a very meticulous and organized person - (some might say anal, LOL) - and Brian never lost patience when I bombarded him with one nitpicky question after another. He almost always had a good answer, lesson, or tip, and on the rare occasion when he didn't, he wouldn't pretend to know better: he would say something like "let me do some more research on that one, and get back to you" so that we wouldn't waste any of our precious lesson time: I could only afford 10 hours, but due to my quick success they were well-spent. FYI Brian's CO home office is very professional-looking, nice lighting, fast video and voice connection, etc. Our internet connection (almost) never got dropped, and I loved the convenience of working from home, no masks, no traffic, etc. Also - as a woman who is vaccinated but still wears a mask, I've always got safety on my mind, and there is no place safer than home, especially during a pandemic. I am an introvert and a very active Googler - (if not Yelper, haha) - and I did my research before hiring a GMAT tutor. Let's start with the well-known facts and move down to the lesser-known ones. Brian is a Harvard grad, and a natural teacher who has clearly mastered the GMAT. He is cool and collected, and his confidence is contagious. He even offers a 700+ score guarantee for certain GMAT students, though I chose to simply pay his regular hourly rate instead of the "discount/bonus" rate. Starting with a 560, which is average at best, I don't even know if he would have taken me up on it, anyway - I do know that technically he requires at least a 550 starting score. Yes, Brian has verified 99% GMAT scores, but so do a lot of people. I ultimately chose to hire him because of his 20 years of GMAT experience, his expert web presence, his knowledge and natural conversation style displayed during our phone consultation, and his record of impressive student score improvements, as well as the fact that his personal GMAT scores were not only high, but also consistent - 700+ on all six official attempts. I also saw the fact that he teaches other tests such as the LSAT, SAT, ACT, and GRE as a plus, not a minus:  I was looking for a full-time private tutor, not a part-timer. Having looked into law school for a while, I also know that parts of the LSAT are in fact really quite similar to the GMAT, such as LSAT Logical Reasoning (LR) vs. GMAT Critical Reasoning (CR). During the lessons themselves, Brian was always friendly, engaged, and present on camera, and he did a great job of distilling every GMAT question we discussed down to 2 or 3 main takeaways I could effectively apply to future questions. He was quick to reply to texts and emails between lessons, and I never found these extra services lacking. You still have to work hard in-between lessons to make the most of the lessons, though - and try to set up your questions in advance.  As he likes to say, "I'm the best at what I do, but I'm not a miracle worker." :) In retrospect, our conversations led to great insights about the exam itself, but also about the learning process in general. Through our lessons, I also became a better student, a more precise mathematician, a more critical reader, and a more skilled logician. Finally, Brian has studied GMAT ESRs (Enhanced Score Reports) for years, and he really knows his sh** when it comes to specific GMAT strategies for all 5 sections of the exam, as well as general ones such as pacing and scoring algorithm management. He has a knack for putting complex questions into simple words, making them easy to understand, as well as setting realistic expectations, giving encouragement when you are doing poorly, and throwing out some caution to the wind when you are doing well. Later on, McElroy also helped me edit my college admissions essays. They turned out great, and I felt more confident about my applications once I sent them in -- even though the admissions rates at the top schools are silly low at the present.
