We flew into TYS, Knoxville late Friday night and flew out very early Sunday morning. On Saturday I was there twice. Once to pick up the rental car and later in the day to return it. While Knoxville is known to be scruffy, TYS is a very good small regional airport. There are flights to Chicago, Dallas, Denver but there are not a lot of flights. The security at night directing traffic was a plus. If it wasn't for those brave men and women, that pickup area would be a complete disaster. The rental car offices are inside and the shuttle / taxi area is outside through a different door from the rental car garage. The taxis dont get a lot of use or love but if your hotel has a shuttle, its the way to go. The return of the rental car does mean you need to go all the way around the airport and return in the garage so stay alert otherwise you'll get dumped back out on the highway. This is the first airport with an incline to security as well as a forest waterfall fountain feature. Starbucks is here, along with Cinnabon, and Ruby Tuesdays. Southwest Airlines is coming in March of 2026 so it will be interesting to see if TYS can handle the flights and influx of passengers. Thanks to the Knoxville Tyson McGhee airport team for welcoming us and treating us with lots of lovin.

If you're flying into Knoxville, you have very little choices so you're probably flying into here. The people working here are very polite. The flight options in and out of here are surprisingly good, especially if you're looking for a regional flights that are direct if you're looking to fly to the West Coast, you're going to likely have a layover for the majority of flights but several options exist between regional carriers. This is a very clean and well run airport that is always an easy experience in and out even with construction and growth.

Small, convenient, and easy to navigate! I recently traveled back to Florida from McGhee, and the experience was a breeze. Dropping off my bags and getting through security was quick and hassle free. The gates are easy to access, with bright, clear signs that are hard to miss. Plus, there are plenty of restrooms throughout, so there were no long lines, always a plus!

A small quaint airport. Doesn't have very much to do during your downtime. No lounges and not many restaurants and shops. It was a very quick bag check, TSA process and there are about 12 gates or so, so no need to really run to catch your flight. Does what it needs to do. No complaints.

12 gates and so easy to access from car rental on site. One of the cleanest airports I have visited. The woman's restroom offers a rocking chair and free feminine products. Such a nice touch for those in need.

Small, barebones airport with very limited food options but overall clean with comfortable seating. No lounges here. There's a Starbucks, Quiznos, Uno pizza, and Ruby Tuesday, so if you want the sit down restaurant option, you have to line up immediately after security.

Nice smaller airport, easy to navigate. Convenient to get to baggage claim and car rentals on first floor. The baggage lady keeps an eye on bags and grabs them to hold if not picked up when next flight arrives. TSA precheck was a little slow because they only have one bag scanner. Bathrooms were clean but do need updating. Overall convenient airport.

This is a smaller, regional airport servicing Knoxville. Pretty modern, but a bit smaller than I anticipated. The retail area is anchored by a sad dine-in restaurant, Ruby Tuesdays, and an art installation. Unfortunately, I was flying American so I endured multiple flight delays lasting about 13+ hrs and I spent a lot of time in this airport. The first day I attempted to leave, I and all of my fellow pre-check passengers had our luggage scanned by the x-ray machine twice. When it appeared the agent was separating my luggage for a third scan, I requested a manual check. At that point, our line was moving slower than the general security line. (The next day when I actually left, that machine was cordoned off and not in use.) A highlight were the rocking chairs in different parts of the airport, which I made use of for hours at a time. Serviceable airport for an in-and-out, but not the ideal option for long layovers.

This airport is easy to get in and out off. Pre-check line was long, but moved very quickly. The Delta self check-in does not allow you to check a bag yourself you will need to see an agent. This airport is clean and well kept.

Well it used to be quick and easy to get through security but that changed dramatically this year. The line is out the door into the road.

This airport is small but very friendly and nice. Easy to get into and out. I would recommend it to anyone flying to Tennessee.

Ask the Community - McGhee Tyson Airport

    Long term parking options?

This is a very small commuter airport if I were going to park long-term, I would use one of the free hotels parking. Let them know at the front desk. They are usually OK and then take a Uber. Otherwise it could get pretty expensive.

I wanted to get there early, to get my bags checked, go through security, secure, rental car, and get to the gate. Unfortunately, nobody was at the United ticket counter to check my bag. It wasn't until an hour later that I was able to check my bag. I'm told that things will improve once the construction is done. A special message to the man at the information desk, at the baggage claim area, who insisted that there were no signs indicating the rental car counters or at the baggage claim area. The picture I've posted with this message proves otherwise, as I insisted to him several times. I hope I return to this airport when they're done all the construction. I won't have to run back-and-forth through the Construction tunnel 3-4 times to get to the right rental car area. It was rather annoying.
