The legendary pork ribs certainly don't disappoint, and the crying tiger is another one of my absolute favourites. The hip and modern atmosphere is fantastic and it truly provides a unique Thai street-dining experience on the north shore. One thing I would say is that the serving portions aren't exactly generous, but that can be overlooked with its reasonable prices. I was on foot, without viable cheap transportation options, other than Uber, I decided to stay around this quaint area of Kirribilli, since my hotel accommodations was about 1/2 mile away from this stretch of stores and restaurants on Broughton Street. I was here around 2pm on a brisk Saturday afternoon - after walking from Hyde Park and across the Sydney Harbor Bridge for the fun of it. It was around 1:30pm when I arrived and saw that the restaurant doors were open, but nobody dining in there. Wasn't sure if they were closed but opening soon, so I asked. I ultimately went to take away and ate near the Lady Gowrie lookout nearby. This transaction basically took about maybe 15 minutes from start to finish. I felt like this was a family run restaurant, especially when the server that I talk to to order was caring for her son also. And it appears that the chefs are her parents tending to the food prep. Many Asian restaurants are small family run businesses these days and it is awesome to perpetuate their culture through food and its deliciousness. Since this restaurant sits in largely suburban residential surroundings, you can find street parking here, which is a lot of it. There is a train station here at Kiribilli and of course, you can take uber here too. Whatever you do to get here, come and try this place out! You will not regret it. For the most part though, it was nice to come here and enjoy Thai food here in North Sydney. I basically ordered fried rolls and an order of panag curry. The order of rice was definitely extra and cost extra too. It was a nice meal, along with a $5 bottle of Diet Coke purchased at the Fruit store nearby. The prices here are generally good, although being an American, it was tough to convert currency on the fly, so I just went with it - being on vacation. The panag curry was nice and spicy. With rice, it made a delectable option for anyone who loves Thai curries. The spring rolls were a delightful treat. I actually ordered two side orders of rice and ended up keeping one for a light dinner later that night. Thank you Thai Fusion for a nice lunch option here in Kiribilli. Hope to be back someday soon. Located in the Winmalee shopping centre, La Montagna is the only non-chain place to grab a coffee here, and the homestyle feel and food on offer make it a popular destination. They have a complete Gluten Free menu available on request, as well as some takeaway options, is great for an informal lunch or cake pitstop. The coffee's good, kids are welcome, and there's a relaxed, friendly atmosphere provided by the lovely staff. They even give you a little shortbread bikkie with your cuppa. It's the little things.

But venture a little further, and you'll find this little gem with no cajoling called Old Town Hong Kong Cuisine. Looking around, you definitely know this isn't part of the old guard - you know what I'm talking about: pink covers, white tablecloths, red lanterns, cheap ornate statues, dank maroon carpet... For a place that's called "Old Town", it's refreshingly chic! For a Chinese restaurant, this place has service that even rivals its higher-end cousins like Din Tai Fung and Chefs Gallery. The staff is friendly - our waitress today is a lovely grandma who happily seats us inside and hands us two menus. She speaks Cantonese to everyone that looks remotely Asian. Love it! Among the surprisingly number of non-Hong Kong dishes, I unwittingly opted for the Curry Beef Brisket with Rice (A tasty Mecanese dish) and the Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings in Birds Nest (A northern Chinese specialty). What have I done? When the Curry Beef Brisket with Rice came out, I was salivating. The aroma that emits from it proved to be intoxicating to the senses, with its mix of curry, beef, chicken skin and potatoes. My first bite transported me right back to Macau: the melt-in-your-mouth meat chunks offered beefy flavours that added a delicious sweetness that melded so well with the piquant of the curry powder and mysterious cocktail of herbs and spices. Blending into the curry is the chicken skin that's so soft you can literally swallow it. Slightly charred were the potatoes that tried to elude my ever-searching spoon offering a little bite to contrast the soft meats. This was heavenly! Next up, Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings in Birds Nest: a chef recommendation with a picture looking like a pancake. The thin pancake layer with delicate bubbles sits atop hiding the morsels of dumplings underneath its fried canopy. One bite and I was hooked as the dumplings' pastry is doughy and at the right thickness while the meat inside is flavored just right. The fusion of meat and its outer casing is akin to marriage: 'til death do us part. But the fun doesn't stop there, that Birds Nest is for eating and adds an entertaining smoky crunch to the dumplings. As I approach the end of my meal, I desperately wanted to eat more and make room in my stomach. But alas, it was not to be. When it came for me to pay the bill, I saw the satay chilli oil flakes that tempt me to come back for the yum cha (and I will). This is the kind of Chinese restaurant that every other Chinese restaurant in Sydney should aspire to be: cheerful, cheap, and satisfying like childhood memories of yore. ~ Jambon Cochon
