I love McKinnon's! This is my favorite location. They have an awesome selection, especially of rarer meats (care for turtle? quail? alligator? you're in luck- they have it) and a great variety of prepared meats. My favorite has got to be the apple stuffing pork. Yum. The meat prices are pretty good, and you can tell the quality is better than you'd get in a typical grocery store. They also have a nice selection of bakery treats and baked meals. I find their soups good, but way overpriced. I hate saying that because I really like the store, but some of the pricing on items like chicken pot pies and soups is just way too much and you can get similar (or better quality) elsewhere at a lower price. If you time it on the weekends, you can taste many of their items via tasting stands. I know I've purchased a few things that I didn't even think I needed after having a taste! read more

It is the best place to go for meat selection and pre-prepared foods. I like the selection of meats for the grill, kabobs, Bison tips, turkey patties mixed with spinach and feta and lots of other speciality prepared meats and vegetables where everything is top quality and fresh. They also have the fresh fruits like oranges. If I go to other stores near by the citrus produce is very dry, here they are all juicy. I really like the to go to the reheat already prepared selections with yankee pot roast diners, breaded chicken and turkey diners with cranberry to go. For a person always on the go and sometimes little time to cook but still want to eat a healthy prepared meal these little dishes are a convience. The also have an aisle devoted to grilling and speciality sauces. Its the only place like it in area as all the other grocery stores nearby are of the large corporate chain varieties. read more

I shop at McKinnon's every week and it always amazes me how rude and inattentive some of the butchers are. Often they are behind the counter doing stuff and totally ignore customers. One butcher in particular does it all the time. You can stand there for 10 minutes being totally ignored. Horrible customer service! read more

The first time I entered this store, I was impressed with the size of the meat section. However, I was looking for something that other butchers did not have. The game meat section was not impressive. The cut of meat I was looking for (a beef cut) was not available in large quantities - I bought all they had, so there was no "picking and choosing" (which I like to do). Recently I was looking for whole rabbit. I called, and it sounded like they had a good deal with frozen rabbit. When I went to the store, I saw that the rabbit was not whole rabbit - and it said "Made in China". Really? Cheap, yes - but I would rather buy local and pay more. So I went to Philbrick's instead and purchased my rabbit there. There produce does not look good. I prefer Philbrick's or Hannaford's. As a foodie who cooks a lot of gourmet meals with unique ingredients, I must say that McKinnon's is no help to me on my market days. read more

Out of all the McKinnon's markets this one of the largest . The selection is impressive and they sell anything to start and complete a meal. Meat: from a butcher counter with angus meat to big bags of sale items. Mostly everything is prewraped and pushing the specials , you do have to pick and choose . Seafood: They have fresh fish and lobster, but there so many fish markets around and were on the seacoast. Stick with the meat. Bakery: Has pastry from the North End including whole cakes, and jumbo muffins everything looked great and prices were on pare with other bakeries. Produce: was less impressive with some item being prewrapped. Very little when it comes to local or organic. Some items looked wilted and yet overpriced. This section is the most lacking of the whole store Beer and wine: Large selection including many unique craft and local brew. Price were ok nothing overpriced but also no deals. Dairy: A very nice cheese selection and they sold Hatchland dairy milk! Overall a decent store, the weekly specials are great. Would like to see them carry some additional local and organic products and not so much of the big brands that you can find everywhere else. They could also improve in some if its freshness and cleaning at times. The store can only be brand new for so long. read more

I have been shopping at McKinnon's since they opened and all I can say is that it is slowly going down hill. Their prepared meals are unappetizing and their produce is a huge disappointment. Also, I always buy fresh ground turkey, and it too has changed. It certainly isnt fresh anymore, and I was told they have to sell the pre packaged turkey first. I love McKinnons. This is the place for your grocery shopping especially for meat. You can find better at a speciality butcher shop but you will find better variety and prices here than at any supermarket. Drove all the way from jaffrey, nh . It was well worth the trip. We now plan to go once a month to Portsmouth. The employees were wonderful. The product was excellent. Only one suggestion. Please instruct new deli employees the right way to shingle prosciutto. The order was recut and the employee was wonderful and accommodating. ,but you don't need the loss at that expense. read more

Went to McKinnon's over the weekend, and I'll hand it to them, the meat selection is amazing. They are truly a butcher shop and it shows. But that's where I think they should end it. Along with a few packages of chicken and pork tenderloin, which were very reasonably priced, we decided to pick up a few of our usual groceries as well. We purchased Stonyfield Yobaby yogurt for our 1-yr old. When we got home and I went to feed it to our child, I noticed that the expiration date was THREE DAYS AGO. For adult items that's pretty bad, but for yogurt meant for a baby? They're selling already expired dairy products? Makes me wonder if they're buying their items like a dollar store does--so close to the expiration date that they're cheaper than fresh products. Anyway, that's the baby yogurt first strike... Strike #2 was when I went back to return the yogurt, but saw a beautiful cake from their bakery. It was my Mom's 60th birthday and, rather than go to Shaw's or Market Basket for a regular ol' sheet cake, thought I'd get something a bit nicer for her. So I purchased a beautiful white chocolate mousse cake for $27.95. I'm not hard to please whatsoever when it comes to baked goods--I've hardly met a cake I didn't like. But this cake was honestly gross. It was the driest cake I think I've ever had, and from the very first bite tasted like freezer burn. It was nearly inedible to me, and it takes A LOT for a cake to be inedible to me. I had quite a bit of the top tier of our wedding cake after it had been frozen for an entire year, and loved every bite. So in closing, if McKinnons were only a Butcher Shop like the Meat House, I'd probably give 4 stars. But since they consider themselves also a Market, I'm giving only one star...and most likely won't go back to give this place any business after the baby yogurt and cake incidents. Pretty good and got nice people. Not too expensive. Has good food. Not your top of the line "whole paycheck" but it is well worth it. No complaints. If they have a rewards program I never saw it :-) But still I like them and shop there all the time. I would give them a 4.5 really. Okay the fruit section is good but you don't get the most exotic fruit from lord knows where! The one thing I don't like is that they don't have decent shaving and other OTC medical stuff. Also the fruit juice section is a bit lacking. If they fix those I'd give them a 5. Otherwise they are pretty decent. Oh and they close too early. 8 pm? Come on! I discovered this store by accident the other day and I am sooo glad I decided to check it out! The prices and quality of the meats were excellent. We purchased some lamb steaks, sirloin tips, and a pork roast which absolutely melted in the mouth with tenderness! It has been practically impossible to find a pork roast cut like this in other places....even when we have specifically ordered one....and with 4 meat cutters in the family we do know what to ask for. A young woman came from behind the seafood counter to offer assistance without being asked. The seafood was obviously fresh with some of the nicest looking swordfish steaks we have seen in a while at an awesome price! The woman at the counter just inside the front door greeted us with a smile and offered to answer any questions. They have a very impressive selection of prepared foods.....for those who either do not know how to cook, or do not have the time....one could stop in on the way home from work and host a dinner party that night which would make you the envy of your guests! Although I did not have the time to really check out these cases, it appeared that they have both ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook meals. One thing that particularly impressed me was the "can do" attitude of the workers. That seafood-counter girl said, "We have been here for about a year and we want people to find out about us!".....instead of the typical worker of today who would say "they" meaning the owner. In other words, the workers take pride in "their" company. Totally a positive experience and will be back on a regular basis. read more

Not a fan.... My wife made her first trip to the Portsmouth location and bought a large selection of meat ranging from Filets, T-Bones, Sirloin, prepared chicken and pork, and marinated meats. Thus far, we have tried the basic steak tips and a package of Chinese pork and both were BAD. The steak tips were bland and tough (at $15.99/lb) and the pork was literally inedible. I'm not sure if it was old or what, but we threw it away and the little we ate gave us stomache pain. We will try the steaks this weekend, but I am not expecting much. Will post another comment afterward. Side note: we have been spoiled by the Butcher Boy in North Andover for many years which is remarkable EVERY TIME. They have the best selection of meat and seafood I've ever seen,I counted over 70 marinated meat items!! 3 strikes your out. Sorry to say I will not be shopping here anymore. First experience, I bought the clams casino which had broken shells in it. Second experience, the pre packaged meat that is marinated was soggy, just awful. Third experience, last night I bought 2 chicken burritos from the deli out back. My husband nearly choked on a bone. Needless to say, he and I both threw it away as I was leery at that point to eat anymore. Good things is the place is clean, good wine selection, and good produce. It is very pricey. I like the store a lot; it's a Man's meat/grocery store, but it seems a bit over priced and the quality of their prepared foods is pretty poor (e.g. mac & cheese is noodles and Velveeta). It's okay for certain things, but certainly not a place I would make my primary grocery store. read more

This place is beautiful!! Each area looks like a different place, the main butcher shop is totally different from the seafood area which has a cool shark over the display case, there's a beautiful stone oven in the prepared foods area which has family dinners for a great price! From meatballs to pastas to wraps, sushi rolls, salads everything! The bakery...now that's my style! It's huge and their mini whoopie pies went so fast at the Red Cross Volunteer event I took them to. The people working there are so knowledgeable. One person literally knew the calories, sodium count, price per pound here vs. other areas of their meats, it was very refreshing! The aisles are setup differently than your regular grocery stores which have long aisles. These are shorter and puts the focus on the fun areas that you want to look around in. I was craving an asian style meat and they whipped up a marinade and sealed it for me to my liking. It was great!! I would drive up from Boston to go to this one!!!! read more

When McKinnon's opened in Portsmouth, NH I was excited to have a meat market for great cuts of meat. Wrong. The marinated chicken was tough, although the flavor was good. I love a nice filet mignon, but again was dissappointed. I've purchased more tender filets at Market Basket. Even with meat tenderizer and bringing the meat to room temp as advised did not help. It was tough and chewy and I will be going to Market Basket for future steaks. read more

The staff at Mckinnon's always goes the extra mile to help you locate what you need- and with a smile! I have tried a variety of different kinds of food items there- prepared items like spaghetti and meatballs to fresh fruit and bakery items. The seafood is fresh and the meat is outstanding! When I was purchasing an Easter ham, the butcher was so knowledgeable and helped me make the best decision for my family gathering. The best part is that it seems as if the staff are actually enjoying themselves as they work! It is clean and has a really positive vibe. Although some items may be a bit higher in price than a competitor, the quality and customer service make it worth it! Highly recommend you stop in to see for yourself! Delicious! read more

Bought Baby Back Ribs for a catered party, they should hang their heads in shame for selling those cuts. The fat and lack of even a rib was unbelievable. Even super fatty St Louis cut made these look meaty. Pure ripoff. First time shopper there and never again. read more

I mostly purchase prepared foods here. It's hit or miss. Sometimes I love what I brought home and sometimes I am very disappointed. The quality is there but my main complaint is that oftentimes the chicken/pork/steak is WAY overcooked and the sides are DULL. Tonight I had BBQ-sauced pork chops, corn and mashed potatoes. The pork chops were hard as rocks, the corn was frozen/or canned and not seasoned. The mashed potatoes smelled funny. I recommend the salmon but it is 13$ a dinner. But they have rice pilaf and steamed veggies. The chicken and veal cutlets tend to be way overcooked. Eggplant rollatini is great. Any pasta dish is very good. Their deli items are good but pricey. The meats look good. The fis counter can have something like flounder stuffed with crab which looks great until you realize they don't move for 4 or 5 days. Store is new and clean but I really think they should have more QC on the take-out. read more
