I really wish there was a reliable small engine repair shop around. McLean Outdoor Power is most definitely NOT. I dropped off a small chipper/shredder for a carburetor tune-up on a Tuesday and the owner, Walter, told me he had several jobs ahead of me and it would be late in the week or possibly the week after before he could perform the service. No problem. After a couple weeks passed, I called to follow up and left a message. I never received a return call. A week more and I stopped by to check on the status as I was preparing to leave town for a week. He explained he was very busy still and if he didn't get it that day or the next, it would be the following week. I returned to town a week and a half later fully expecting my service to be completed, but no. He said since I was out of town he "figured I wouldn't need it while I was gone." He said it would be later in the week but definitely THIS week. I called again Thursday afternoon requesting an update and again no return call. I made a third trip on Friday afternoon and got the same old line, "yours is up soon - in the next few days." I had enough. I was very patient with his schedule. Even though a few days turned into a month for a job he said was very simple and quick. Four weeks later and he hasn't even touched it. Walter actually had the audacity to say that my visit to his shop had wasted 10 minutes of his time. Are you kidding me!? I was waiting for over a month and then he got very aggressive complaining because he had to take a couple minute to make more excuses. He also told me he was tired of having the same conversation with every customer. That tells you all you need to know. When I was firm that if it wasn't completed today he could just forget it and I'd go elsewhere, he was exceedingly discourteous and said "just take it then". I am shocked at the lack of professionalism from a business owner, especially after he strung me along for weeks, continuously being deceitful with regard to his schedule. I am amazed the business continues to operate, but clearly, due to the lack of competition, he has no fear of running out of work. I strongly advise finding another option or simply going out of town. Please reply if anyone has any recommendation for small engine service/repair. Update: A few hours after my threat to simply take my equipment elsewhere, he called and said it was done, come pick it up. Upon arrival, my invoice had ballooned from his estimate of $40-$60 to $120. When I questioned why the bill was higher than quoted and asked if further work was required, he said no. He had done exactly what he said he was going to do but the bill is what it is. Walter was dishonest from the minute I walked in the door for a minor carb tune-up until over a month later when my charge was doubled. Beware the dishonestly of this business owner. read more
