I was recommended this shop by professionals and so made a special visit before catching my flight from Edinburgh. The shop itself is quite beautiful, with a fascinating array of books. They are not ordered very well so be prepared to browse and rummage, but that's the fun of going into a secondhand bookshop! What I wasn't prepared for was the appalling attitude of the woman behind the till the owner as she turned out to be! She is indeed Mrs Danvers-esque as brilliantly described by the last reviewer! There was another lady quite lovely and helpful to other customers, but the owner was certainly NOT interested at all. As I approached the till, with a considerable pile of books, and asked about prices, my question was all but ignored. When I tried to have a conversation and explained that I was doing research, she snapped that everyone who came to her shop was doing research. All was said while having her back turned to me, and without even so much as looking up! When she did look at me over her spectacles, she didn't try to hide her air of annoyance that I had disturbed her. On that note, I halved the books that I was planning to buy and left the others behind. I will certainly find them again and will not be giving my money to such a rude person who it totally unappreciative of my custom. The world of books and bookselling is a small one and one that is being subjected to a great deal of pressure. I would have thought that looking after and engaging with the customers the most obvious way to ensure that people returned and recommended in turn. As such, I will be going elsewhere next time I am in Edinburgh. read more
