We stopped here to check out some of their prepared foods. My mother in law likes the convenience of ready to eat foods and we wanted to compare this store to the one is South County as well as the other upscale grocery stores in the area. They had a large selection of prepared foods. I loved seeing many ethnic choices like Pad Thai and Lasagna....in addition to the traditional chicken and rice dishes. The prices were very affordable and competitive. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Plenty of parking right in front of the main door. read more

Considering we had recently come back from Hawaii the prices were better. Store has lots to over, fresh bread (daily), deli counter, lots of produce, etc. we found the display of pricing a little strange, listing the price per item then per pound, quart or oz. But no biggie. Several items on sale throughout the store and not to much out of stock. We picked up breakfast yogurt, berries, milk, cereal, fruit, bread, cheese/sandwich meat, hummus and some baby carrots. Very happy not to have to travel off the island to get groceries for a couple of days. read more

Very cute and wholesome grocery. A price increase from, say, market basket, but not a lot more than stop and shop or Dave's. We really liked the edamame, olives and baguettes. Makes you feel like you're on vacation! read more

If you need anything while touring in Jamestown, don't miss McQuade's Marketplace. Not only do they have some choice snacks, like Skinny Popcorn in many flavors, they have all of the sundries you need, including locally made soap. Trish at the checkout was not only great in serving us, she knew the area and suggested some very affordable good eats around town and in Newport. Friendly is an understatement. read more

Pleasantly surprised at what I found here. Bought chicken salad from the deli (it was very good). Warrick Creamery Ice Cream (excellent), a bunch of different flavors. And a sprinkling of gluten free items, pancake mix and bread. I thought this store had a nice variety of items, ones I know and ones I have never seen before. A few things are expensive, but that is to be expected as the only grocery store on Jamestown Island, but most prices were reasonable. Staff was friendly and professional! Store was clean. Will definitely hit McQuade's again while in Jamestown! read more

A grocery that has more than just food Most grocery type stores have either morphed into the gigantic super stores that have all kinds of different things and are almost mini malls or have shrunk down to gas station type convenience stores. The medium size grocery has almost become a lost beast of the past. McQuade's is one of these anachronistic looking groceries that were probably very common fifty or so years ago. I was surprised to learn that there are actually three different McQuades. I'm not sure if three stores qualifies as a chain but of the three the one on Jamestown is the smallest and most quaint. Not surprising since everything on islands tend to be smaller and quainter. This particular store is the only one of the three that does not have a pharmacy. It does have a great deli and bakery department and the usual dairy and frozen food areas. The great thing about the store is that it uses lots of freshly grown local product, some of it organic so depending on what's in season the veggies are superb. It also gets fish and crustaceans right off the boats so the seafood is also about as fresh as possible. Great stuff. Being a small store everyone is especially friendly, both the employees and the other costumers. I always spend more time in her talking than I do shopping and this is a good place to find out what's going on around the island. McQuade's certainly can't compare to the super, mega stores that seem so prevalent and invasive this days but it has other, more difficult to define things. Rather than the usual stressful experience of negotiating hordes of people and masses of cars in the larger stores, the experience of shopping at McQuades is almost peaceful and cathartic. We were staying in Jamestown for a week at a timeshare resort. We were given directions to McQuade's to get a few groceries for our full-sized kitchen. It has a small hometown feel and made me feel like a kid again going to the small grocery store that was in my hometown while I was growing up. There weren't a lot of items on sale, per se, but a lot of the foods were cheaper than we found at the Newport Shop 'n' Save, Walmart, and other tourist shops. McQuade's was definitely the place to get your local food souvenirs. For example, Newport Coffee was only $4.99/bag vs. $7.99 at Walmart or $8.99 in souvenir shops. McQuade's also offers movie rentals for $1 for two nights (even better than Redbox!). Unfortunately, you have to have a check-cashing card, and who uses checks anymore? Well, except for the local woman cashing out for about 10 minutes in front of me. They're only open 'til after the Early Bird Special at restaurants end, so you'd better plan ahead! read more

You guys need to step up your game in the produce department. Just bought a red onion and opened it hours later to find the core soft and rotten. Feeling and squeezing many of the red onions in the store before purchase, this one was the firmest, but still turned out to be rotten. If you want to sell rotten produce, sell it at a discount. I've never been impressed with the produce in this store. It's time to step it up. 6/16/19 - came to the store to buy a lemon. All rotten - full price though. read more

Am I missing something? I can't say I was excited or impressed by this little market -- there really wasn't anything super about it. I popped in here in search of fresh seafood, and was sorely disappointed in not only the seafood department but the whole store. It seemed busy enough, and perhaps I am spoiled but living in Providence and within 2 miles of two Whole Foods, but this is definitely not a market I will be seeking out in the future. The lighting is dim, the aisles cramped and the selection of foods are not all that impressive. If you're a local, perhaps this is a nice alternative to the bigger chains but for an out-of-towner seeking fresh fish, this was a bummer. read more

McQuades's is simply a no frills market that is your last stop for essentials and supplies when heading out to Beavertail, the southern most point of Jamestown on the island. It would be easy to settle, but they offer far more than just a typical store with a full deli, baked goods seafood and produce and a huge supply of grab and go foods and drink for a picnic or day at the lighthouse. Kudos to the owners for having such a clean, affordable and friendly place. read more

Produce is horrific. Frequently there is mold and rot. Prices are high. Floors and fixtures are not well maintained. There is a general lack of pride of ownership in this place. Most of the staff are quite nice but several are quite rude. This isn't Martha's Vineyard. On this island, we can easily drive off and get better prices and service. read more

While on a weekend in Jamestown for some respite from NYC, we drove to Trader Joe's, a million miles away because our dinner menu was Mexican and we thought McQuades might not deliver on things like jalapenos. Well, what we found was that Trader Joe's had a lot of rotting, soggy veg. They only offered shrink wrapped jalapeno 12 packs (that's 11 too many), moldy tomatoes, packaged lettuce, etc... We left without buying anything and drove back to Jamestown lickity split. Well, McQuades had single jalapenos, fresh avocados, tomatoes and generally, a lovely selection of meats, veg, cheese and chips for our Mexican feast. Yay McQuades. For the small island and town to have a full grocery store is fantastic. The hours are reasonable and the prices fair, especially given the above. They have a good selection of fresh produce, meats and other prepared food. You can find all the other dry goods you may need as well. The staff were friendly and they have had all lanes for no lines across my multiple visits so far. Couldn't be happier to have this grocery store during my long visit to Jamestown! read more

When the store is supposed to close at 7:00, they close at 6:50. When I asked why, they told me that they go by their clock in the store. I'm thinking it would be courteous to correct the clock's accuracy, or change the sign outside to read "open 6:50 A.M. to 6:50 P.M."..... Or here's a really crazy option: knowing the clock is wrong, check an accurate device (cell phone).....& just stay open until 7:00. I'm pretty sure they don't care much whether I return as a customer...so I'm guessing things won't be changing any time soon. :0( read more

I've been going here since I was in the womb. Always see people I know. Always people to help you. Quirky set up (ie. cleaning gloves located above the egg case or something). Good selection and they don't jack up the prices just because they're the only grocery store on the island. I got Jim Carrey's autograph in the parking lot when he was filming "Me Myself and Irene." We enjoy shopping at McQuade's, the closest thing to a "super" market on our island. You can get just about anything here. They have fresh produce, some nice health food goods, robust deli, dairy, baked goods, frozen foods, etc. But what really sets McQuade's apart for me is the ribeye steaks. I don't know why they are so good, but nothing matches them - in the US or elsewhere in the world. I've looked! Cooked at high heat on the bar-b-que or on a well-oiled ribbed cast iron skillet, with a good rub (I use onion salt, Chef Paul Prudhomme's Blackened Steak Magic, and Butter Buds), they are superb. They melt in your mouth. McQuade's does stock some gourmet items, as well. It's also a very friendly, neighborly kind of place. read more

This place sucks. Shelves are not stocked, over priced, seafood is horrible. Deli counter is skim and nothing seems fresh. Don't dare go there before 8 and ask for bagels and rolls. Angry she devel lady comes out from the back and defends her bread! Go to Stop and Shop over the bridge and get fresh food from a real market. This place is disappointing, needs to be bought out by Daves. read more

I go out of my way to shop at McQuades and avoid Stop & Shop and Dave's. McQuades prices are cheaper than any other supermarket I know and they always have EVERYTHING on my list. The people are friendly and go out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. What I love most is that i don't need coupons or keychain scanners to get sale prices - McQuade's items are just plain less expensive without all the gimmicks. The atmosphere is quaint and the staff treat you like a neighbor right from the start. McQuade's is certainly worth a trip over the bridge for a relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience. read more
